I'm South African. We got a lot of zimbabwean students because if you studied in SA you could end up getting a visa and working there or something, a lot easier. Also one dude, age maybe 23 or so, from Zimbabwe was married to a 40 year old lady. Last time I was back in SA we met my friend's family from Zimbabwe, one 50ish year old married couple told us when they left, they took their car, put their most valuable stuff in the boot (trunk), and went to SA "on holiday", which they had to pretend about when leaving Zimbabwe. They never went back but seem to be doing quite well for themselves in Cape Town now.

I've met rhodesian ridgebacks before too. they can be kind of grumpy dogs. Tiny t-rex arms are not common for this breed. They are also called the African Lionhound. Here's one who has befriended a deer baby, which is called a fawn. CS Lewis went and hosed that all up though by calling satyrs "fawns". Cuckoo posted:The ridge's modern use is so frou-frou breeders can charge thousands for what looks like a mutt that's ~*special*~ because of its Spinal Bifidia Yeah. I figured it was just that they were predisposed to having weird cowlicks until I read about the spina bifida while making sure that I was remembering the lionhound thing correctly. sucks. anchoress posted:the ridge isn't caused by spina bifida, it's just fur that grows the opposite direction. why does everyone think this Because quite a few sources incorrectly say so. My bad. should have triple checked cuckoo's and several other sources' claims. Apparently a lot of mainstream sources misunderstood or misrepresented research into dermoid sinus of ridgebacks, including several breeders, who claim that it is the cause of the cowlick. BBC One was actually sued due to the claim. This is actually the first line in the wikipedia article: quote:The Rhodesian ridgeback also called African Lion dog/hound (in order to remove the word "ridgeback" from the name, due to the fact that the ridge isn't normal and is actually a sign of Spina Bifida)[1] I should realized I needed to check that since I had heard them called lionhounds without the spina bifida myth attached in the past.

yeah i saw that in the wiki article, and the citation for it is a dead link and they don't mention spina bifida anywhere else in the article. it does seem like there's a lot of misinformation out there but i think the claim is ridiculous on its face, i mean do people really think every single ridgeback has spina bifida i'm getting heated about this

I think it's actually very good news that the dogs look like they have a disease but don't actually have it, usually it's the other way around

just popping in to say ridgebacks are mad and a normal temperament renders them loving and mischievous goofballs. though if they lock onto something with their jaw you ain't getting that back anytime soon.

I connected the dots a day later and realized this dude was literally fighting for a white minority slave holding state that the UN hated (mainly because Rhodesian was really succesfull before the civil war. He told me about how good Zimbabwe used to be before the black majority took over and destroyed the country. Nice to see the mods of this forum now openly equate simple truth with "racism."

news flash, racialism is, as ayn rand says, the most primitive and asinine form of collectivism; however replacing pale skinned statist thugs with brown skinned ones doesn't necessarily make things better, and Rhodesia was much better in many ways than Zimbabwe

Morkies posted:have you stopped being racist yet? I'd say not entirely, but at the same time I'm about 1/100th as racist as the average white american whose attitude is basically "of course by default I'm not racist, I am extremely progressive and have not ever examined myself very thoroughly, because nobody ever calls me out as soon as they find out where I'm from". If you're asking if I feel bad for the stuff that happened before Mandela was freed and the ANC took over, yeah I feel really guilty about that. To be fair, not all white South Africans do so your attitude is mostly justified; lots of people these days basically have the attitude "they had their chance and by now black people in SA have nothing to complain about" (by the way, mods, please don't ban be for saying "black", because you see nobody in SA says "African American". In fact, it's not racist there to say the words "black" or "white" or to talk about race, which is pretty taboo in the USA, I've noticed.) When I was in Europe I often got either "you're south african, why do you hate black people" or "you're south african? I also hate black people" but the response I really love to hear is something like "south africa...??? What country in 'south of africa' are you from?" which generally means the person has never heard of apartheid before But once I heard "you're south african? then why are you white?" which made me think, "yay, I won't get racist accusations this time!" but then when I said, well, my ancestors moved over from europe etc... She said: "so why do you hate black people?" which was not really so funny. Last night I was at a bar with my wife. We were talking to the barman and three black people walked in, we started talking etc. The guy asked me what kind of accent I had, where was I from? I replied "south africa" and of course I felt a bit like "I hope I don't get judged", which is probably pretty natural. I got the best response of all which I get all the time in the usa: "oh... south africa... uhhh.. that's africa, cool". I'm glad in this one case that USA education isn't super great. I get that response a lot, instead of the standard european "why do you hate black people" response. Nigmaetcetera posted:are you friends with die antwoord? (hurrr blacks cause all misery) I don't know anyone from Rhodesia but it was brought to my attention it was better than South Africa, and they actually had a schooling program set up to get the locals out of the huts and acquainted with modern society. While most of the army was also largely mixed companies, because of the manpower pools the country had to draw from and thus there were little boundaries between integrated blacks and colonial whites. Can anybody confirm this for me? I'm not well versed in the histories of Colonial African countries.

(hurrr blacks cause all misery) South africa had such a schooling program, except it was called bantu education and it wasn't very good (cause blacks are stupid you see, so they can only handle the most basic education). I love to imagine how utterly enraged the nats would have been when people like Mandela (who was a lawyer and quite clever) would come along and act all smart in front of them. Also the second part of your post is really badly phrased and quite unintelligible, so I cannot answer it. If you're asking whether Rhodesia had an informal apartheid system but some blacks in the army, the answer is yes.

Ah, excuse me then. I'm actually asking if it was substantial number or really just some, as you stated. And how deep the informal apartheid actually ran in their society. I ask this because most Rhodesians thought it was quite good, and most Zimbabweans condemn their former masters like the devil. Hence getting a good image of the situation is wedged in-between two extremes.
