Yeah same. It runs p. good on my modern day high end computer, but it lacks the dynamism and heart of the original SC.

Game is 32 bit in its core so if the global population of units goes over 500 or 1000, I can't remember which, the game runs at half speed until enough units are elimated. Also for all the unit diversity the multiplayer always ended up as rush/nuke saturation, or bomb the gently caress out of each other with artillery forever.

Forged alliance (not stock) is actually one of the best RTS games since probably starcraft 1. I still play it occasionally. The only thing it really suffers from is the AI is absolute dogshit.

I don't think the fourth faction added much to the game and their all chrome/asymmetrical design is tough on the eyes.

Game owns bones, https://www.faforever.com is the best option for multiplayer as they maintain a game lobby, ladder rankings, and continuously balance and patch the game since gpg.net went down. They also have a massive mod and map vault. Game runs noticably smoother and faster than regular supcomfa too. I still love playing the game but holy gently caress am I poo poo compared to pretty much everyone else

They fixed the wonky balance problems that the originals had, mainly by making it so the best stratagy wasn't to build a never ending field of metal makers as soon as you hit t1 builders, and made it so expanding was almost always worth it over turtling.

TA is better because theres so many units and tech trees that you can pull stuff off that no-one has ever seen before competitively. Supcom1 you could build a factory and click the rally point to other peoples bases and they would quit cause you ruined their grand strategy

Goose's rebellion

I remember when people tried to form a pro gaming tournament scene with this, then they realized the games were like an hour+ long and nobody is gonna watch two guys attacking moving two giant gunship fleets around.

it's the ultimate casual gamer rts though. just sit in your corner of the map building base defenses and shields until you can build the cool superweapons and/or a giant air army

The stupid planet shaped map gimmick didn't really play out. Plus the space combat was poorly implemented.

I dunno why everyone feels they need to redefine the genre every time. I'd seriously be happy if they just continued to polish the TA/SC dynamic and give us some cool units with neat looking powers.

SC had it almost perfect.

I used to have so much fun designing massive multi-front attacks to attack big turtle bases. A wave of weak units to hopefully soften things up a little. A couple of those big gently caress off units escorted by a massive swarm of little guys. A big flock of bombers sent to kill a list of specific targets before hitting a patrol pattern above the enemy base. A huge escort wing of fighters to protect the bombers. A few waves of strong T3 units loaded into air transports to drop in as a followup to the big initial attack. A bunch of smaller groups of artillery, builders, etc.

It would take me longer to set up all the groups and waypoints than the actual attack would take to carry out.

Applewhite posted:

This is why SC was so awesome. It was essentially just TA upgraded to use new hardware to its fullest.
