Meanwhile, in the forest...
Autumn's shaft strikes true, penetrating deep into the butt of the retreating troll. Daimon's payload unfortunately misses the hambeast by a few scant inches, getting in his hair but causing no real harm.
pre:
The troll takes 11 piercing damage from Autumn's arrow.
Daimon's crossbow bolt misses.
Although terrified, the men begin to rally behind the aid that was promised and seemed to actually be delivering.
"Blessings upon you, strangers!"
"Yes, thank the gods! Who are you people?! That was an amazing shot!"
"Be careful, there's an orc around here somewhere! I think it's in league with this beast! It distracted us so that its big friend here could sneak up on us!"
The men, armed with daggers and short swords, endeavor to charge the fleeing troll, erroneously believing they have it on the ropes. It was a foolish charge, though, for as they did so, the last hints of daylight faded away from the sky, as the sun had finally set. Moreover, the creature had retreated just beyond the light of the campfire, making it nigh impossible for the unrefined human eye to see amidst the overgrowth of the forest. Most of their attacks strike at the surrounding vegetation, although one manages to hit the broad side of the beast.
pre:
The men attack the troll with short swords and daggers, for 22 / 5 / 5.
The troll takes 3 slashing damage from the onslaught.
Daylight has faded away entirely.
In response, the troll roars furiously, its previous thoughts of retreat dissipating in its primal, enraged, aroused mind. It rears back, clearly readying itself to strike out at all three men with deadly force. With a fair amount of concern, those possessed of darkvision and within visual range of the monstrosity would note that the troll, although badly burned and sporting a number of serious-looking wounds, doesn't even seem to be winded by the damage, let alone taking note of it.

"Well met strangers! Boy are you lucky we stumbled across you." Clive is pretty sure there's probably a universe where that is true. "I'm Durnem. We have Jacob - he's safe! And the Orc is with us. This Troll is blind as a bat, but can navigate by smell." Clive had no idea whether that was true. "We covered you with the tents in hopes that the rain and canvas would mask your scent from the beast, but alas, it didn't seem to work." In fact, Clive thought the whole endeavor was pretty hosed. This lot should be dead or sleeping right now.

"We'll explain later!" Clive would cross that bridge when he came to it. "Rally yourselves, gird your loins, and continue your efforts! Together we can defeat this foul beast!" Clive couldn't resist more dong jokes.

"Just...do us a favor and light that far tent on fire, assuming everybody is out of it."

Gorom Grofhorm
HP: 15/15 AC: 15 HD: d12 (1/1)

Fighting a troll was stupid, Gorom may be a berserker, but he had no deathwish. As he rode away form the camp, he figured he would need to find another river crossing (as he originally planned) to meet up with the others, then they could all use the crossing to avoid the troll all together.

He could hear the men's cries as they tried to do battle with the impossible bulk of the beast; you'd have to be a fool to fight a troll. If the others saw which way he fled, they should be smart enough to flee the scene as well before the troll catches wind of him...

Perception (realism): 1d20+2 18

Just as Gorom was content to follow the river west, as no one told him about the change of plans, he could barely make clear the shouts of Jorvan and Clive. What were those fools doing, exposing themselves to the enemy, and more so the troll. As he turned Kahli about, he could see through the trees and downpour that the others had started hurling missiles at the beast from the far bank. Now we're helping the bandits?

Trast posted:

"Fight on! Help is here!

Forever_Peace posted:

"We'll explain later! Rally yourselves, gird your loins, and continue your efforts! Together we can defeat this foul beast!"

This all seemed rather fool hardy if they were just going to have to kill these men once the troll was dead, but surely they must have a reason. Even if the troll killed the bandits first (Gorom didn't know their identities) it would just go after his fellows next. For just a moment, he thought that they had made their own beds when they attacked a troll, but then again, their deaths would leave the barbarian stuck alone in the Stolen Land. He wondered if he could track back to Oleg's on his own. It didn't really matter, now he was going to have to ride back in there and fight, or at least distract a troll until they could ride away.

Hanging his axe on his back again, Gorom drew a javelin and began riding towards the enormous beast. The missile took flight, but the density of the branches proved too difficult to pierce as the javelin got hung up in a tree.

Meanwhile, in the forest...
Gorom returns to the fray, heroically launching a javelin at the abomination that is the forest troll. The shaft fails to penetrate its thick hide, but he does succeed in unknowingly reinforcing Clive's claims that he is, in fact, a friend. The men don't have time to register this, however. The forest troll rears back and knocks one a solid dozen feet backwards, slamming him against the nearby boulder. It bends down low, taking a bite out of another one of its assailants. It attempts to pivot, seemingly trying to slam another one of the men with its throbbing trunk, but fails to connect as the adrenaline of the fear of dying that way causes the man to duck out of the way.
pre:
The troll attacks with its bite and claws, for 11 / 9 / 11.
The first and third man engaged in melee take 6 and 8 piercing and slashing damage.
They both fall to the ground, blood gushing from their wounds.
"Urnh..."
"Graahhhhh!"
"Gralahehehehe..."

Within the dark overgrowth of the forest, the specifics of what has just happened is unclear to the men near the campfire. The general idea, however, is clear as glass.
"Oh, no..."

Resignation on their faces, the men with crossbows step forward. Two of them take aim, firing bolts into the darkness while screaming, attempting in vain to avenge their fallen comrade. Blinded by the darkness, their shots add no value to the fray. The third has a greater presence of mind, reaching down to his side and retrieving a hip flask: he opens it, stuffs a bolt of cloth into it, bends over, and lights it in the smoldering campfire.

"Yippee ki-yay, motherfucker."
He lights the improvised molotov cocktail and hurls it through the air. Against all odds it strikes the troll, dousing it in flaming oil - no, not oil... ...brandy? The good stuff, too.
pre:
The men make ranged attacks for 10 / 7 / 22.
The first two are crossbow bolts, which miss.
The third is a molotov, which lights up the troll.
The troll takes 12 fire damage.
The agonizing screams of the troll drown out all other sound now.

For future reference Teonis since you have advantage from being unseen your disadvantage from being at long range is cancelled out, not that it mattered this time :ohdear:. From the start of chapter 7- If circumstances cause a roll to have both advantage and disadvantage, you are considered to have neither of them, and you roll one d20. This is true even if multiple circumstances impose disadvantage and only one grants advantage or vice versa. In such a situation, you have neither advantage nor disadvantage.

Daimon lashes out at the troll with a psychic assault, unaware that Clive - in the guise of Durnem the surveyor - has done so only moments previously. Like a certain unnamed and unrelated parallel, it has adapted, and that attack pattern no longer appears to be effective. Its milky white eyes appear to be oozing blood now, though, so at least some portion of the assault might have gotten through to the creature's impressively small brain. While this is going on, Jergo makes an effort to satiate the creature's appetite with a thorough fisting, albeit to no avail: it would likely be a more effective strategy if he could bring himself to look at his opponent. Jorvan had his eyes on the prize, so to speak, though, and that didn't seem to help him. His arrow also misses the forest troll's flapping, wildly free appendages. If focusing on the enemy didn't help, and averting one's gaze didn't help either, was there any clear path to victory? Clive knew the answer to that metaphorical question.

My confusion came from a couple things. My darkvision only goes to 60 feet and I'm farther than that so disadvantage. But the troll is blind so that grants advantages and negates my vision disadvantage. What Pdot reminded me of was that the troll was on fire so it was visible past 60 feet thus granting me advantage again. Melee range should always have advantage against this troll.

Trast isn't saying that the fire adds a third "layer" on top of the vision disadvantage and the blindness advantage, he's saying that because the troll is on fire, Jorvan doesn't have disadvantage due to vision. Thus, the only modifier is the blindness advantage, with nothing negating it.

Meanwhile, in the forest...
Against all odds, Jorvan's arrow that had appeared to miss the mark in fact struck a tree branch, which splintered under the force of his shot: perhaps the tree was dead? ...or perhaps it was Desna's will, lending a helping hand to her faithful servant. In either case, only a few moments after the disappointing launch, a loud crack can be heard, and before anyone can process what is happening the massive branch crashes to the ground, slamming the troll in the back of the head.
pre:
Jorvan's critical strike occurs, causing 9 damage to the troll.
Gorom's axe strike also hits, causing 10 slashing damage to the troll.
With the remnants of the molotov coating his skin like napalm, Gorom's axe biting deep into his flesh, a tree branch giving him a fairly powerful concussion, and the myriad of other matters ruining his day, the hulking monstrosity bellows an unearthly roar.
"Gruyaaaaagh!"

The forest troll rears forward, biting deep into the throat of the one short sword wielding man still standing in his range, who drops to the ground screaming and gushing blood everywhere. With Gorom having wisely retreated from the creature, it takes out its rage and pain on the other men laying near its feet, who were already in the process of dying, smashing them into pulp with its tree trunk-sized claws with a sickening 'splurch'. Blood and innards spray everywhere as the several thousand pounds of troll flesh explode the men like sausages.
pre:
The troll attacks the three men within its melee range, for 22 / 15 / 24.
The man still standing takes 8 piercing damage, and is knocked to the ground, clearly dying.
The other two men who were already incapacitated take 15 and 14 slashing damage, and are immediately slain.
The troll then takes 2 fire damage as the lingering flames of the molotov burn themselves away.
The rage - and the strength - of the creature is astounding. The improvised explosive device used to set it ablaze continue to sear its flesh, but as it writhes and thrashes the ground in its general vicinity, that blessing begins to fade, and before you realize it, the flames have faded away entirely. The enveloping darkness of the night returns once more, before the men with the crossbows had taken their opportunity to fire. Blinded by the night, all they, and some of you, can hear is the hoarse, groaning breaths being taken by the troll somewhere in the darkness nearby.
pre:
The lingering fire upon the troll has gone out, returning his vicinity to darkness.
The remaining men near the campfire quickly become terrified. Two of them start firing bolts into the darkened area where the troll had been standing, but it is hard to tell whether any of their hurried shots connect.
pre:
Two of the crossbow men attack, for 18 and 10.
Their assault deals 8 piercing damage to the forest troll.
Meanwhile, the third crossbow-wielding man retreats towards his tent. The two men firing blindly into the night exchange knowing glances with each other while their comrade breaks rank.
"Elena! I know you didn't want to be disturbed, but this is serious! Please, wake up!"
pre:
Teonis, you will need to move yourself on Roll20 before I update the map.
If you disengage you will only have 60' of movement, and need 70' to get to the troll to begin with.
This is because the entire area is difficult terrain (so each square costs 10').
You may need to use the dash action to get in and out as a result.
This would naturally risk an attack of opportunity.

In the forest...
In a show of solidarity and a surprising amount of teamwork, Jorvan and Jergo manage to both create and deposit a light source relatively close to the troll, illuminating it once more. Luckily for Jergo, his trauma-wracked mind continues to edit what he is seeing into a slightly more palatable version of reality. Unfortunately for everyone else, the writhing, sweaty, excited troll is visible once more.
pre:
Jorvan casts light on a dagger, which Jergo throws across the river.
It doesn't hit anything or cause any damage to the troll, but it does illuminate it.
Meanwhile, the man who decided to wake someone up drops his crossbow and begins trying to lift the tent that he and his comrades had cut their way out of a few moments prior. It doesn't take very long for someone to respond. It is a light and airy voice, speaking with a thick accent: it would seem the common tongue is not her first language.
"Elena, can you hear me?! Please wake up! We could really use your help over here."
"Dah! I am back, the warbling of your new friend shook the ground. It would also seem you dropped a tent on me?! Oyobuk! Cut me out of here if you are wanting my help!"

Shoe do do do do do do do
Shoe do do do do do do yeah
Shoe do do do do do do do
Shoe do do do do do do yeah
Durnem Hapford (alias of Clive Wearling)

Rolls, Character Sheet
10/10 HP, 14 AC

From his position half-buried in the gloppy muck that slopes down towards the stream, Clive has completely engrossed himself in the task of coming up with the wittiest, most devastatingly incisive dong joke he possibly can. ...alright maybe something that rhymes with 'package'. Peakage? No that's lame. Needs to be punchier. 'You call that a scholng? More like a!... gong? tong? bong? gently caress. Alright different tact: 'Your dong's so dank, other trolls think they just noticed a..."

Clive is eventually snapped out of his meditations on the meaning of dongs when a small silver glowstick arcs through the air an plops down onto the far side of the river, softly illuminating the underside of the troll's features and what appears to be the gentle silhouette of a small pile of pulverized innards.

Frustrated that his normally quick and venomous verbal barbs have failed him, Clive lets out an exasperated sigh, takes a casual glance down the sights of his crossbow, and fires off a shot from a ludicrously ambitious range.

quote:

Crossbow vs. Troll: 1d20+4 21
Xbow damage: 1d6+2 6

Somehow, to Clive's mild satisfaction, the bolt rips a steep parabolic trajectory through the night sky before plunking down into the troll's roasted flesh. Shhhhhhhhafted.

Hoping his mojo has returned, Clive glances around to see how everybody else was faring. (Is Clive suspicious of this "Elena"? Yup).

Seeing one of the trappers cease his attacks on the troll in order to wake up some creature that somehow a) managed to sleep through the whole affair, and b) can apparently take on a giant troll, Clive double-checks his exit route in case a hasty retreat is needed. Immediately regretting the distance with which he left Gala, Clive turns to the remaining horses and asks for a volunteer to come a little closer in a fierce Hippodratic whisper.

quote:

- Crawl one square to the NE (the maximum extent of my movement in difficult terrain while prone)
- Ask for one of Daimon's or Jorvan's horses to approach to within 10 feet, just in case. Whichever one is feeling more brave (or is more daft) at the moment.

I have already moved Clive on roll20

edit: Clive has no compunctions about borrowing somebody else's horse (because he can always lie about what happened later), but if you the player don't want me doing so just say the word and I'll edit the narration. =)

edit 2: reminder that Gorom and Jergo have bard dice (props to Jergo for keeping and impeccable to-the-second record for how long he will feel inspired for).

pre:
Inserting an opportunity attack for Gorom's movement in Roll20 during the round.
Gorom continues to circle around the troll in an effort to confuse its senses: more specifically, to make him harder to track by scent and sound alone. A galloping horse in the forest is not the easiest thing in the world to conceal, however, even amidst a rainstorm. The beast rears back and swipes a meaty paw at Gorom as he tries to escape the creature's reach, but due to a combination of the slipperiness of the rain, the muck of the forest, the aforementioned blindness, and the fact that he is apparently distracted killing three other men, the troll's opportunistic strike misses by a few inches. In all honesty, though, those few inches were probably the difference between having a good day and a decidedly unpleasant one.
pre:
The troll makes an opportunity attack upon Gorom, rolling 14 to hit for 9 slashing damage.
Perhaps thankfully, the attack misses Gorom.
While the creature strikes out at their half-orc companion, Clive and Daimon continue to double-team it, in the process creating several exciting new holes.

Gorom Grofhorm
HP: 15/15 AC: 15 HD: d12 (1/1) Raging

Illuminated or not didn't make much difference when Gorom was this close to the troll, he could make it out with his eyes anyway. Even without his night-sight, he could probably locate the thing by smell. It was awful, a mix of burning hair and fat with B.O. and musk. Pulling on Kahli's reigns, Gorom brings her about and drive her forwards, through the gap between the troll and the pit. Fire seemed to work best on it, and since the bandits were dead now he was the bait.

After a few less-than-stellar shots, Autumn makes up for it with a perfectly accurate arrow right into the heart of the oncoming troll. The beast is temporarily distracted by the arrow, clawing at the shaft and ripping it out, presumably so that its wounds could heal in short order. Taking advantage of the situation, Gorom strikes brutally into the partially exposed spine of the creature: not unlike a lumberjack slowly but surely cutting down a tree.
pre:
The troll takes 16 piercing damage from Autumn's arrow.
The troll then takes 11 slashing damage from Gorom's axe.
In response to the unbelievably painful tag-team, the troll bellows a mind-splitting howl: the sound is almost unbearable. Its head bobs around the area in what at first seems to be a stroke, but which you soon realize is it likely scanning the area with its nose and ears to get a bead on its adversaries. The creature doesn't behave as expected, though: rather than blindly charging after Gorom, it picks up one of the shattered bodies of the men it had recently slain in each hand, and begins to spin on its heels in place: it seems to intend to throw them.
pre:
Shotput velocity: 47 miles per hour

Strength check, troll (first body): 8
Shotput range in squares (first body): 5

Strength check, troll (second body): 17
Shotput range in squares (second body): 10
It spins for a few seconds, and you all experience more or less the same thought: 'please don't let that come my way.' Most of you are granted your wish. The awkwardness of flinging two bodies at once causes the troll to have a bit less throwing power on his off-hand, and that is evident in the trajectory of the first corpse shotput. It barrels through the air at nearly fifty miles per hour, clipping Gorom before careening into the river bed. Based on the trajectory, it seemed to be intent on hitting Jergo as well.
pre:
Gorom is stuck in the path of an area of effect, being a corpse-based shotput.
He takes 18 bludgeoning, and can make a DC 15 reflex save for half damage.
The second body has a bit more power to it, perhaps due to the troll being able to place his second hand on it for a bit more controlled of a final spin. It goes careening through the air and slams into the two men standing near the campfire.
pre:
The two men near the campfire are struck by the second shotput.
They each take 17 bludgeoning, and can make a DC 15 reflex save for half damage.
They roll 18 and 5.
After seeing what happened to Gorom, the first man near the campfire had his wits about him, and managed to drop prone before the projectile could knock him into the river. The second man just stood there, dumbstruck, as his former comrade came barreling into his chest at forty-seven miles per hour. The sounds of his bones breaking upon impact are sickening, and all too clear, as he goes careening into the river bank, carried by the corpse's momentum.

While all of this is going on, the one man who had stepped away continues to tear at the tent in an effort to free the person trapped inside. He seems to be panicking after his comrades are struck by the corpse of his former friend, but he manages to pull himself together and carve an opening. Once that is done, a small, blond, human girl - perhaps somewhere between twelve and fifteen years old - crawls out of the tent. She spends a moment to take in the situation, scanning the area across the river bank, and then the literal bloodbath near her men, and then the gargantuan, bloody, sweaty, naked, otherwise disgusting troll, before commenting.
"...Eto piz`dets."

Reaching into the hole of the tent from which she had just emerged, the girl retrieves a strange-looking object: none of you have quite seen anything like it before. It seems to be a mashup of a crossbow, a magic wand, and a staff, albeit too large for a wand, too small for a staff, and having the stock of a crossbow. She levels the device at the troll, adjusts a lever on its side, and pulls the trigger.

pre:
Elena sets the device to: Mode 1.
The troll takes 36 force damage.
A series of twelve unbelievably loud thunderclaps momentarily deafen everyone in the area, and a dozen bursts of light emit from the wand-staff-crossbow held by the girl, each streaming unerringly toward the troll. The creature's head literally explodes, and its body topples to the ground shortly thereafter, twitching and writhing. With the threat seemingly contained, the girl looks to her remaining men, and then to the rest of you, steps into the light of the campfire, and asks a simple question.
"What is this?"

The girl continues to survey the area, having not really taken in the scope of the carnage during what remained of the battle. She also seems to be looking over the 'heroes' who saved them with a healthy dose of suspicion, although she can't really argue with what Daimon is saying. The remaining trackers back up Daimon's claims, as well.
"It's true. They arrived just in time to help us fend off the troll. If not for them, we might be in a much worse spot right now."
"One of them, the elf, saved Jacob, too. He apparently fell into the river."
"Oh really?" The girl eyes the area with a look of deeper suspicion. "How does one just fall into a river, exactly?"
"Well... it's complicated, boss...", responds Jacob, from the far side of the river.
"Enough! You and Michael were drinking alone at night again, you are to blame for this! We could have all been killed! Watch duty is watch duty, not drink duty! This is not complicated!"
"But...", responds Jacob.
"No buts!" Jacob cuts off his sentence at that, while she shifts her gaze to Daimon. "We have much to thank you for then, Daimon, and other travelers, I think. We will need some time to sort out this ...mess..." she says, looking at the destroyed campsite, and the blood everywhere, and the corpses of several of the men, "...but you are welcome to join us and speak, if you would like." She nods her head in what seems to be a gesture of thanks, or perhaps appreciation, and answers Daimon's question, "Is a pleasure to meet you, I think. My name is Elena. Elena Kwalishnikov." Sparing a glance towards the twitching troll, she inquires of Jorvan, "It is dead?"

Seeing Daimon's gusto in striking up a conversation and the vicious strike the nearly levels Gorom, however, Clive screws up the courage to join in. Clives stands, left hand up and right hand dangling at his side, holding his crossbow. "Durnem. I'm glad we arrived in time to save your man here. Though my condolences about the others."

Clive nods towards the troll. "I think that might still be alive. It's the toughest bastard I've ever seen, certainly. Be on your guard. My companions are moving to investigate - whatever help you could provide them would be much obliged."

Clive clearly signals that the pleasantries may have to wait, and tears his eyes away from the bizarre contraption carried by the girl in order to gaze intently at the felled troll. That's right, we're all on the same side here and your task is to offer some assistance. The group of trackers hear Jorvan out, and the two men look to the girl for direction as to how to respond. Her stance becomes clear rather quickly.

"Is pleasure to meet you, Jorvan. Desna is goddess of luck, yes? It would seem she is on our side tonight for you to be here when needed. Perhaps it is a good sign." She looks to her dead men, including the two who were split open like crushed sausages. "Though not too much good luck, I think." She hears out Jorvan's offer, and responds, "It seems some of the men are still breathing, but in bad shape. Dah, please help them if you can. They are strong stock, but this situation is ...unusual. Unusual circumstances warrant unusual solutions, I think." She looks to her two still-standing men, and offers, "Do what this Jorvan is saying, put fire to the thing! Perhaps you can be using the rest of your alcohol for it, hm? Then we will not be repeating this again tomorrow night when you decide the watch duty is safe enough with a few drinks in you."
Jacob attempts to respond to the accusation, but is quickly cut off. "But, that is-..."
"Enough! No chattering, more firing!"

One of the men quickly rushes over to the troll, pouring the contents of a mostly-full hip flask about the creature. The other man follows behind him, having taken a moment to retrieve a smoldering log full of cinders from the remains of the camp fire. He tosses it onto the troll, and the thing lights up like a pyre pretty much immediately.

"Disgusting. I was not aware this place had such things. You would think a watchman would notice a twenty-foot tall troll sneaking up on them, no? Even if they are very drunk, should still be able to see a walking barn." She shakes her head, letting the matter go after seeing her men looking a bit exasperated. Looking back to Jorvan, she inquires, "They will be okay, or no?"
