Listen on! Listen on! This is the truth of it. Doodles lead to drawing, and drawing gets to painting, and that was drat near the death of us all. Look at us now, busted up and everyone talking about hard rain! But we've learned! By the dust of them all, Creative Convention learned. Now, when men get to Doodlin', it happens here, and it finishes here! Two men enter; one man leaves.

I think you found a good balance between defining shape through lineart/colours here.

Last night, I wanted to do a velociraptor. Someone who liked the "food items on chickens" pics I did for the food theme asked if there could be a burrito on top of it.

Yes. Yes there could.

You've seen those "deep dream" google image recognition pictures where the program shows you what it's seeing in a picture, right? And it's so many dogs forever and ever into infinity?
If you're not familiar, here's a ton of them and there's some recognizeable as NSFW even after the mutation.

I tried to draw one.
I liked the idea of drawing, of making an interpretation of an image that's been interpreted by a weird algorithm, from a photo of a sculpture. It's so far removed from the original. Artception!

I love when the weekly drawing event has a once a month painting session. Longer poses makes it easier to paint. I just wish acrylic didn't tear so much. Oils don't seam to have this problem.

Testing some limits with a javascript library (Leaflet.js!) I put this silly thing together. Bit more coding than drawing, but I drew a lot of cats for it, so I thought ya'll'd appreciate it still.

You can go very minimal and still convey the presence of scales:

Or you can go considerably less minimal, but still avoid rendering every detail 100%:

There's a lot of ways you can handle scales. In the end, the best advice is probably the usual: have reference and do studies of actual critters. Experiment and find what works and looks best for you! There's not only so many ways to handle scales, but there are so many varieties of lizards and snakes that it really depends on what you want. I mean, the coral snake study up there has smooth, diamond-shaped scales along the body, but something like a bush viper has more pointed, leaf-like scales.

It's just a tried and true method. v:shobon:v Sorry it's a bit unhelpful to the actual rendering part. That really does depend on what you want, sometimes it is just as simple as some shapes dotted out. Or it can be as overly messy as "put down undercolors, outline shapes, blend shapes inward, erase chunks, just frickin slam the eraser against the tablet repeatedly, etc".

Generally though:
- You can trim a lot of fat and get away with just some clever stippling and/or erasing here and there.
- Try to be conscious of where the drawing stands. eg. you can render lots of/each and every scale if you've got the desire and patience for it, but it's easy to hit the point where all those details end up visually distracting from the whole.
- For real do studies and have references.

I did stamps back in school. It's basically rubber glued to a piece of wood, pretty sure you can buy it in any craft store. I had (probably still have) a special little chisel with changeable bits. The way we transferred the image was just to draw it on a piece of tracing paper, then cover it with chalk or charcoal dust, then flip it over upside-down on top of the rubber and trace it.
