Now that austerity has been proven to not ever work for around 35 years now, how much longer are people that insist on it going to be taken seriously? Another 35 years or so?
They'll be taken seriously for as long as there is big money to invest in endowed chairs and schools of business economics and think tanks to give paid hacks a platform to stand on telling lies about basic economics.

Son of Rodney posted:

Id like to be more informed that I am, but the way I understood it the EU is pretty grumpy because while everyone agrees that the austerity measures for greece are generally poo poo, there are reforms that they basically have to do in order to be long term viable, like cutting ridiculous spendings and actually paying their taxes, but greece is mostly "hm, no" and this causes the EU to not implementing solutions that are actually viable, since they believe that it still wont make a difference. Is this correct? Am I dumb as gently caress?
There are reforms that greece needs to do (better taxation, especially on the rich who are the greatest offenders of evasion), and reforms that they have done for the most part (early retirement pensions). The EU wants them to do the first and more of the second. But they aren't gonna give them any help by fixing the means by which the rich evade taxes -- ie moving their money out of greece -- and their answer to how greece should take care of their old folks on fixed pensions is let 'em starve.

At this point though, "reforms" are not going to help Greece did their way out of the hole. It's not like the citizens of greece are super-wealthy and that better tax collection would solve everything. They have 25% unemployment. The greek government needs to spend more, not less. They need a way to put demand back into their economy, or the future will continue to look much like the present.

Except one somewhat avoids paying taxes through loopholes in the system or donating so much that charities get the bulk of it, the money is still going somewhere.

And the other... well, they just don't pay.

It's good to have social programs. However, these programs require money. This money generally comes from taxes :D

Yes.

Are you familiar with the scale of tax cheating in Greece?

http://www.theguardian.com/business/2015/jun/22/greece-bailout-tax-collection-rates

quote:

Tax matters - Greece bailout deal hinges on collection rates

Agreement with creditors relies not just on reformed tax rates but collection rates with Athens losing 6% more of GDP to evasion than OECD peers

At the heart of the proposals submitted to Brussels by the Greek government on Monday – and central to the disagreements remaining between Athens and its creditors – is the issue of tax.

According to reports circulating in Athens, the government offer to negotiators includes corporation tax increases on companies with profits over €500,000 (£359,000) and additional income tax for individuals with annual earnings of more than €30,000.

The Syriza government is also understood to be ready to make bars and restaurants charge valued added tax at the top rate of 23%, as demanded by Greece’s creditors. But it wants to keep two lower bands: one at 13% for energy and basic foods and another band at 6.5% for medicines and books.

******

But why is it so difficult to get Greeks to pay taxes?

If anyone should know then it is Haris Theoharis. Until he stepped down last year he was Greece’s top taxman, the secretary general of public revenues, under the previous government of Antonis Samaras.

Greece, says Theoharis, loses around 6% more of GDP to evasion than the average country in the OECD club of rich nations. But, he adds, “much of the problem is structural”.

“Greece has between two and two and a half times more self-employed than in the rest of the OECD.” And, he notes, it is notoriously easier for the self-employed to evade than it is for employees who mostly have their taxes deducted at source.

Then, there is Greece’s big shipping industry. “And that cannot be taxed anywhere because of international regulations and because the tax base is international.” He gives an example – apparently taken from personal experience – of a big firm lucratively shipping goods from China to Germany: “But with one woman with a telephone in Athens who could be moved at a moment’s notice [to avoid taxation].”

Greece is like DnD running a country in the sense that they would want lots of social programs (which can be good), however not enough people would contribute, everyone would be blaming everyone else for not contributing enough, or would realize that some people are not contributing enough and then they themselves would refuse to contribute, and then the country would run out of money

“In Greece more than two-thirds of the population – private- and public-sector employees – pay tax in the normal way, because it is deducted at source,” Theoharis explains. “The problem is that it’s still too easy for contractors, people in the professions and some big companies not to declare all or part of their earnings.”

I just looked into it some more since I was mistaken in how much of it was shipping, which you can't really tax too much (shipping was just 1% or 1/6 of that missing 6%). The articles I'm reading makes it seem like it's mostly lawyers, doctors, some big corps, etc. and I am fine with taxing them as any bleeding heart would

Well you can't blame the Greeks for needing to borrow all of that money.

I mean, when you're country is right in the Mediterranean, one of the greatest trading and tourist zones in the world, you have to be expected to be poor. And since all of Western Culture is owed to the Greeks whom lives over 3000 years ago, clearly they need that free cash. I mean how else are they going to maintain all of those historical sites that are currently in ruins and not being cared for at all.

Well yeah. Fact is Greece was only lent the money on the premise that no Euro nation would be allowed to default, a notion that should have been stomped on really early instead of allowing to go on and on.
