Pokemon, everyone here's heard of it, everyone here knows about it. But by how much? The First Generation of Pokemon is absolutely fascinating to me, they made these games not knowing how well it would be received. They were thinking it would be enough for a sequel pair of games and that'd be it. They didn't know it would be coming over to the west, so it has the good old Japanese strangeness that later games are missing, especially for Gen 2, which they knew would be coming west bound. All Pokemon games have it, obviously, since Game Freak is based in Japan, but they know they're also releasing to a very large Western market, so this game is where it's in full force. And despite how much people know of the American side, they hardly know anything of the Japanese side.

So we'll be covering more or less every aspect of Pokemon and Pocket Monsters in the first generation, including the chosen game: Pokemon Yellow was released in September 1998 in Japan (just before the release of Red and Blue in America), October 1999 in America and June 2000 in Europe. It's based off of the still running anime with its still 10 year old protagonist. Cheekily, they based the game on an anime that hadn't even finished yet (the next episode in Japan after Yellow's release was Battle of the Badge. Yep, that one), so it doesn't follow the anime's story exactly, or hardly at all. We'll see as we go through.

In any case, let's get on with the show.

Update #01: Welcome to the World of Colour

:siren:Opening and Intro:siren:

Man, what a crazy video game "Old Man Lecture" is.

I've heard of this level called "Outside", I wonder what it's like.

Gonna need to stock up before we leave.

I could explain things, but it's also pretty self explanitory.

Everything's so colourful, I love it.

Need breakfast...

"for you."

Dr. Yukinari Okido is from Ōkiddo, orchid. Ōkido is an actual family name.

Alright, guess I'm going hungry then.

Pallet Town: Shades of your journey await!
(Pallet is a set of colours)
Masara Town: Masara is the color of pure-white beginnings.
(Masara comes from massara, brand new, or masshiro, pure white)

Next door I go, maybe they'll feed me.

"Grandpa's lab."

Guess I'm heading there next

"isn't around!"

Oh come on!

"POKEMON for me."

"POKEMON inside!"

Now what?

Truly this is the future.

"protect me!"

I could do the same, but someone's gone awhol.

One place I haven't checked.

Great...

What will Oak do?

Don't make it look too easy now.

: A POKEMON can appear anytime in tall grass. You need your own POKEMON for your protection. I know! Here, come with me!

"waiting!"

: Hmm? SHIGERU? Why are you here already? I said for you to come by later... Ah, whatever. Just wait there.

"on the table?"

: It's called a POKEBALL. It holds a POKEMON inside. You may have it! Go on, take it!

: Hey! Gramps! What about me?

: Be patient, SHIGERU, I'll give you one later.

Well, don't mind if I do.

: No way! SATOSHI, I want this POKEMON!

Goddammit! :argh:

: Gramps, I want this one!

: But I... Oh, all right then. That POKEMON is yours. I was going to give you one anyway..."

"caught earlier."

: You can have it. I caught it in the wild and it's not tame yet.

Yaaaay?

We'll skip out on this for now, we can always change it later.

: If a wild POKEMON appears, your POKEMON can fight against it! Afterward, go on to the next town.

"lot stronger."

Might as well check it out.

Pretty basic to begin with. And, well, it's got pretty bad stats all around, aside from Special. I'll go into much bigger detail later.

Oh boy.

#025: Pikachu

#133: Eevee

Okay, the main meat of the game, it's pretty simple to begin with.

We only have two attacks. Thundershock, sorry, THUNDERSHOCK, is a fairly weak Electric move, but it's all we have. It also has a 10% chance of paralysing the opponent. In Japanese, it's simply Denki Shokku (Electric Shock).
Growl (Nakigoe: Cry), lowers Attack by 1 stage, though the strategy this early on is to attack, attack, attack.

Like so.

Ow that hurts. Tackle (Taiatari: Body Blow) does hit pretty hard and Pikachu's low Defense stat is not helping here.

Let's take the edge off.

Eh. Since it only reduces it by one stage out of six, at these low levels it's not much of an impact.

And now my Growl doesn't matter. Tail Whip (Shippo Wo Furu: Tail Wag) lowers my Defense by 1 stage. So now Eevee's Tackle will do the same as it did before.

I'm not sure if I'll be able to take it out next turn, but it can definitely knock me out.

Best be safe and heal up 20 health.

Huh.

That makes sense, critical hits double your damage and have a higher chance of happening depending on your Speed. Pikachu's somewhat speedy, I suppose

:toot:

Oh yeah!

Bye then.

: It's odd, but it appears that your PIKACHU dislikes POKE BALLs. You should just keep it with you. That should make it happy!

Oh really?

How do you like me, little buddy?

This is gonna be a long game...

And just before we finish, let's have a look at the starters for the other versions.

as someone who only watched past like episode 12 or something, what makes Battle of the Badge a "that" type of episode? Was it really terrible or something?

Crosspeice
Aug 9, 2013

It was the final Gym episode and featured the first appearance of Mewtwo, who wrecked Gary Oak and his ten badges. So the second half of Yellow is basically the same as Red/Blue because the anime they were basing it on was still going on and was nowhere near done, but they struck when the iron was hot, as it were.

Also, here's the first Side Notes, looking at the very early concept of Pocket Monsters and how the games were released. I'll be going into more detail later, such as how Game Freak came to be and what beta stuff of the games exist, but for now, it's just a brief overview. It would've been included in the OP, but it's better as its own separate thing.

Side Notes #01: Release Overview

In the murky depths of 1990, a game concept is proposed to Nintendo by a small gaming magazine called Game Freak. It's name was Capsule Monsters. There was some difficulty in trademarking this name, so it would eventually be changed to Pocket Monsters. It would have quite a development time and, with overseeing help from Sigeru Miyamoto, Pocket Monsters Red and Green Versions were released in February 1996 on the Game Boy and more or less rejuvenated the slowly dying system.

They suspected the games would do fairly well, it was a pretty unique concept and with how Japan is ingrained with connective gaming even today, the trading aspect and two separate versions meant it sold very well. However, due to its long development time and that this was one of Game Freak's earliest games, it was held together by shoestring and prayer. There were many bugs and glitches, the sprites were atrocious and there was little to no balance. So in October 1996, Pocket Monster Blue Version was released with a number of fixes and overall tweaks, though the deep mechanics weren't changed all too much, it was a step in the right direction.

Because it improved from its predecessors so much, it was decided that the overall look and stability of Pocket Monsters Blue would be combined with the data of Pocket Monsters Red and Green to create Pokemon Red and Blue. Knowing they had a hit on their hands, Nintendo went all out with marketing to the west with the games, the anime, the TCG and all manners of advertisements and food in September 1998 for America and June 1999 for Europe. Unsurprisingly, it became a massive craze that overtook nearly every child's life (including mine!) and became a worldwide phenomenon. Everyone has heard of these drat games and everyone has probably played them at one time or another and, depending how recently that was, remember it differently.

Update #02: There and Back Again

Just before we start, here's an in depth look at our first Pokemon. I'll be talking about this more at the end of the update.

Now let's continue.

Time to head off for glorious adventures.

Might as well say something to our mother before we disappear into the countryside.

"you."

: You should take a rest.

Doo doo do-do-doo.

: Oh good! You and your POKEMON are looking great! Take care now!

I don't think we'll talk to her for the rest of the game.

COLOUR!

Time to head out onto Route 1, or 1 ban doro. Wild Pokemon will jump at you, so be ready.

: I know. I'll give you a sample! Here you go!

Aww yeah, the free stuff begins early.

: We also carry POKE BALLs for carrying POKEMON!

We're not gonna get far before this happens.

#019: Rattata

I don't think we'll have much trouble.

Good idea to get experience to begin with, this'll be the only time we really fight wild Pokemon.

You'll grow on me.

#016: Pidgey

Pikachu has zero problems with these birds.

: It's a bit scary, but you can jump from them. You can get back to PALLET TOWN quicker that way.

We've made it out and we're mostly not dead.

There's a slight colour change in every location. Some are very, very subtle.

Viridian City: The Eternally Green Paradise
(Viridi is Latin for green, while Viridian is a blue-green colour)
Tokiwa City: Tokiwa is the color of green eternity
(From tokiwa iro, the colour of evergreen trees)

There's a number of signs around the world telling you stuff you already know, or what I can tell you. We won't be reading them.

Doesn't mean we won't follow their advice, though.

"perfect health!"

Very simple, very convenient.

More often than not, the people inside the Pokemon Center have nothing useful to say. We'll be ignoring most people in the world unless they give us something.

"Please wait."

Hmm...

"POKEMON MART"

SHOPPING!

What's it to you, boy-o?

"to him?"

Responsibility. :ohdear:

This house has a load of info that I can just tell you instead.

In summary: Catch Pokemon in balls, carry up to 6 at once, weaken them before throwing through damage and/or status, battle other trainers and face 8 gym leaders then face against the Elite Four.

Sleep: For a few turns a Pokemon is unable to do anything. Will wake up between 1-7 turns.
Burn: Halves attack and takes 1/16th of its HP each turn.
Poison: Takes 1/16th of its HP each turn and loses 1HP every four steps out of battle.
Frozen: Becomes completely immobile and can only be cured by items or being hit by a fire type move. Otherwise, it is indefinite.
Paralysis: Quarters speed and has a 25% chance of being unable to move that turn. Curing the status does not remove the speed reduction.

Some statuses are pretty bad, especially in this generation. We'll get into the crazy stuff later.

Oh?

Uhuh, I can tell by the way he slurs his words.

We won't go that way quite yet, we do have a parcel to deliver.

Head up here first...

...and find our first hidden item. We have no way of detecting these yet aside from pressing 'a' on every square, but that's what the internet is for.

Back home we go.

We can use the ledges to avoid nearly all the grass.

...nearly all.

: Well, it seems to like you a lot. You must be talented as a POKEMON trainer!

: Ah! This is the custom POKE BALL I ordered! Thanks SATOSHI!

"something for me."

: Ah, SHIGERU, good timing! I needed to ask both of you to do something for me.

"POKEDEX!"

: It automatically records data on POKEMON you've seen or caught. It's a hi-tech encyclopedia!

What? I'm on this adventure to avoid school!

: SATOSHI and SHIGERU! Take these with you!

Oh fine. I mean, how hard can it be?

: But I'm too old! I can't do it! So, I want you two to fulfill my dream for me!

"POKEMON history!"

: Alright, Gramps! Leave it all to me! SATOSHI, I hate to say it, but I don't need you!

"from my sis!"

: I'll tell her not to lend you one, SATOSHI! Hahaha!

I will punch him in the face swear to god.

"you, SATOSHI!"

Let's have a look see.

Any Pokemon you've seen will be recorded.

You can only recieve data once you've caught it.

Other features are the noise it makes when you encounter it and what locations you can find it. Pidgey is everywhere.

What's this do?

...never mind.

Only one thing we've captured.

Yeah, let's not try that.

And right at the bottom, we have this little guy. Gotta lot of spaces to fill!

So what's this about a TOWN MAP?

At least one child in this family ain't a jerk.

"you are."

Everything is dumped into the 'BAG', which totally isn't annoying.

A colourful way of telling you where (most) things are.

As well as places we won't be visiting for a while yet.

Back to Viridian we go.

A worthwhile battle, Sand Attack (Sunakake) is a Normal type move that lowers accuracy by one stage. I hate moves like this.

I will never be free...

"feel great!"

: Sure you can go through! I'm sorry I was so rude to you! I see you're using a POKEDEX. I'll show you how to catch POKEMON as my apology.

If you must.

Pretty simple, just throw the ball and ca-

-get frustrated when it fails over and over again, because gently caress you.

"my touch."

: I've run out of POKE BALLS too. I have to get some at POKEMON MART.

Ah, Gen 1 grammar. How I've missed you.

"VIRIDIAN FOREST."

Grandad's liquor cabinet doesn't restock itself, you know.

Need some POKE BALLs myself

And here's me forgetting that you don't need Antidotes for Viridian Forest in this game.

I'll be alright.

One more area of interest.

Seems like no one's home. Kinda rude, honestly.

Let's go shove some creatures into spheres.

Side Notes #02: How Pokemon Tick (DVs and Stat Exp.)

Pokemon at the base level is very simple, you attack using moves and make enemies faint. Some moves are stronger than others and they are themselves strong against different Pokemon. But go beyond that and you'll see a system that is designed for min-maxing for PVP matches, including the first Generation, if a bit limited in scope.

There will be quite a few of you familiar with the system that was introduced in the 3rd generation, but the system in both the 1st and 2nd isn't too different. So, let's look at how our starter started out.

Firstly, it's definitely set as a Pikachu in both how we see it via its sprite and how the game sees it by its class. We could change these if we wanted to, I have full control, I am like a God, mwahaha. Er, we can change the nickname at any time and will do so between updates if people come up with good ones.

The OT is in all games, but there are no Secret IDs, making it much easier for more than one person to have such a number. We can also change its level or exp, something I might do later to complete the dex. I also like that Electric/Electric typing. Very useful (if a type repeats the game only counts it once, no Pokemon truly has one type).

Then there's the current HP, what statuses it has (no BRN for whatever reason, or confusion for obvious reasons) and the catch rate, which no longer applies since we have it.

We can also give it any move I fancy, or give it the maximum PP for every move. You should only do that for PVP in the very, very slim chance it matters (it won't). Each PP Up increases the moves points by 20% up to 60%, so Thundershock's 30 would become 36, 42, then 48. Don't waste them on moves you'll replace anyway, they're of limited supply in nearly every game.

But down at the bottom is what we're actually interested in. Firstly, we have the Individual Value, which can range between 0-15, or 0000-1111 if you know your binary. It's also called Determinant Values to differentiate it from the later system, which I'll be using. DVs are given when you catch the Pokemon and cannot be changed, so if yours suck (which will be pretty likely), too bad!

To begin with, they don't effect a stat that much (an increase of around 2 in a stat with 15DV, instead of 0DV), but at level 100, it's an increase in 30, so for competitive, you have very little reason for it not to be straight 15s across the board. You may also notice that HP doesn't have a value. That's because it uses the last value for Attack, Defense, Speed and Special for its respective numbers, so if you're lucky enough to have 1 in those places, then HP will be 15, which it seems like it is, since the max value is 22 for HP, but there's a lot of rounding. You may also remember that Pikachu started with a HP stat of 19, which is pretty low, so it's probably just as bad as everything else. But I'll pretend it's good because I need this. Don't take it from me.

So you can see that we have nearly maxed Special and HP (good), mediocre Speed and Defense (bad) and low Attack (eh). I could change these, but hey, might as well work with what lemon coloured rats I'm given. (Pikade?)

Next up we have the Stat Experience, this is slightly different to Effort Values, but the application remains the same. Every Pokemon starts with 0 and can be increased to a maximum of 65535. For ALL STATS. The reason it's such a high number is because when you defeat a Pokemon, it doesn't have a set number of EVs to give you, instead it uses its base stats. Those numbers match up to the base stats of Eevee, so to max them out quickly, you must defeat the strongest Pokemon. Literally! (The most even way to do it is defeat Mew 656 times).

Stat Exp also has the largest change in stats, obviously, but again, not as much as lower levels, increasing only be 3. But at level 100, it's a difference of 65. Together with DV, you can increase a stat by nearly 100 by having everything maxed. So it really pays to do this for PVP. I could change all these if I wanted, but it'll be interesting to see if Pikachu maxes anything out by the end of the game. The max our Special can get is 198, so we should get pretty close.

And that's everything your Pokemon is about. There's still plenty more mechanics.

It's kinda funny that Yellow was the first Pokemon game to have Pokemon follow you about on screen, or Pikachu at least but it took until the Gold and Silver remakes over 10 years later to bring it back.

Then Gamefreak dropped the feature for the games that followed it. :v:

Apparently the Pokemon follow feature ate up more memory than it was worth in player hype. (I wouldn't be surprised if that were true. Each Pokemon would have to have standing and walking sprites for four directions--eight in the most recent generation--and with how huge the Pokedex is, that would be a massive undertaking just to animate.)

This is the first I've heard of this system, but if it works the way you say, if its other DVs are 5 (0101), 7 (0111), 7 (0111) and 14 (1110), then its HP DV is 1110 == 14.

I love seeing these clever hacks that people used on these older machines. All that just for four bits of memory per Pokemon. Or maybe it's to keep the DV field at 16 bits so it's byte-aligned with whatever comes before and after it in memory, if that's a speed advantage? Either way, it's hard to imagine that even crossing anyone's mind with the hardware we have now.

I think that checks out. For the record, this is the DV/Stat Exp. calculator I use since it's quick and convenient. So, Pikachu should have 20HP if it has 15DV and 0 EVs, but if it's 14, then it could've been rounded down to 19. But, when it leveled up, it just about reached the threshold to round up to 22, the highest value it could have.

I love being a nerd.

That is why I think they'll never implement it again and were only able to in those games since it was the perfect amount of both memory and the number of Pokemon. It'll only get worse and worse in each new generation and it's their fault for showing us it was once possible.

Still, compare DP and B2W2 and it's impressive how much the DS Pokemon games changed. Maybe we'll see just what a N3DS Gen VII could be compared to XY.

The "most recent generation" is 3D, not 2D, and only needs one (or two) walking (or running) animations on all the existing 3D models.

Update #03: Catch-a-thon 1998

Let's catch Pokemon #2!

Simple enough, just lower its health and catch it.

Hmm...

Let's try again...

C'mon, drat you!

"caught!"

"RATTATA!"

Alright!

No nicknames, that's for you to decide! (Or at least let me change inbetween updates).

Let's have a look.

I don't know off the top of my head if it's good, but it's a Rattata, it probably isn't.

Aha! This time you're mine!

Crap... Looks like we'll need to weaken it.

Gust (Kaze Okoshi: Stir Up Wind) is a weak Normal move that is one of the best moves Pidgey learns, unfortunately.

Time to weaken it. Go Rattata, try not to die!

Worrrrrrrrrrrk.

"caught!"

Too easy (phew...)

That's everything on Route 1, so let's heal up and shove these animals into cyberspace for the rest of eternity.

We have a few options. SOMEONE's PC is Pokemon storage. We'll meet that someone later. We'll also use SATOSHI's PC for item storage later too. PROF.OAK's PC is Pokedex evaluation.

From here, we can withdraw from box to party, or desposit from party to box. Or release WHICH WE WILL NEVER DO.

Enjoy your existence.

Before Gen 3 you had to save to change a box and if your current box is full, you can't catch anything. Ahh, the memories...

This gives us 240 spaces (20 in 12 boxes), which is plenty. Hopefully.

Now onto Route 22. That's right, it's not all linear. It also means new Pokemon to catch!

#021: Spearow

You will be mine!

Oh, okay... Crap.

#029: Nidoran F

One, two, three.

Let's see what else there is.

#032: Nidoran M

Ah, it's companion!

"caught!"

:smuggo:

Just one more...

Ah, here we are!

#056: Mankey

Leer (Niramitsukeru: Glare (no, not that one)) functions exactly like Tail Whip, just different distribution.

Scratch (Hikkaku) is another one of them basic Normal moves. Slightly stronger than Tackle, though.

"caught!"

And this will be our second team member. A nice physical counterpart to our electric rodent. Nicknames are still (and forever) up for grabs.

Let's head back for now, we'll catch Spearow later.

~Together forever~

The magic of editing.

Oh baby, Thunder Wave (Denjiha: Electromagnetic Wave) will paralyse all Pokemon bar Ground and Electric types. I will never get rid of such a useful move.

I think we're getting somewhere, slowly but surely.

Now that we've trained for no reason whatsoever, let's explore the rest of the route.

?

Oh. Hey.

"have any BADGEs!"

I've got a monkey that knows kung fu, I think I can get past.

: By the way, did your POKEMON get any stronger?

So this is an optional battle that sticks around until you get the first badge. It's useful for some early experience and it's useful in another way, which will be apparent later.

While I annihilate this thing with Thundershock, it'll use Peck (Tsutsuku), a weak Flying type move that I resist, so I have nothing to fear.

Like so.

"EEVEE!"

By having the switch function in the options, you can know what Pokemon the opponent will use and switch yours to better counter it. It's pretty useful and saves a turn to do it instead.

Unlike every other Generation, you switch AFTER the opponent sends out their Pokemon. It's kinda awkward, honestly.

I should be alright after a couple of these.

Oh come on.

Now I'm definitely one hit from death.

...I hoped that'd do more.

:rip:

Alright, I can make use of that -2 Defense... with my one special move. Goddammit...

:tizzy:

"not attack!"

I've still got this. Barring another crit.

And any move in general...

HAH, gently caress YOU. gently caress YOU AND YOUR BULLSHIT HAX!

...you, uh, fought well.

That could've ended poorly.

:toot:

"out!"

...yes. Yes I did.

"tough trainers!"

: I have to figure out how to get past them! You should quit dawdling and get a move on!

I'll dawdle your face... grumble, grumble...

"allowed through."

"let you pass."

drat, I was sure kung fu monkey would work. Oh well.

Easy enough to get back.

Now let's finally head north!

Side Notes #03: SHIGERU Who?

We know him, we hate him, but who is this dashing rogue? The one always one step ahead of us? Well, he has many a name: Green, Shigeru, Blue and Gary. Let's start from the top.

Green is the first name he was given. Green Okido, grandson of Dr Okido and the boy you've known since birth. His name makes sense since you are Red. Red and Green. HMMMMMMM. It really was as simple as that. But they couldn't really have a guy named Green, or Red in the anime series. So they were changed, Red to Satoshi and Green to Shigeru, the names I've chosen for the LP, since Yellow is based off of the anime. In the updated Japanese Blue version, he's still called Green, but it doesn't hugely matter since you can name him anything, like Douche, or Buttz. There are also default names, some of which you cannot access normally.

Firstly, in R/G, Green's default name is Ishihara, referring to Tsunekazu Ishihara, who was the Producer of the game and is currently CEO of the Pokemon Company. Red's meanwhile, was Yamaguchi, or Wataru Yamaguchi, the game's Art Director. For Blue, Green's default name is Kuricha, a corruption on Creatures Inc, who mainly work on side series games and the TCG, as well as the first Mother game. Red's, meanwhile, was Gēfuri, the abbreviation of Game Freak.

Now, when the games were localized, there was no Green, so they instead went with Blue. However, this only applies to the Red version and is switched in the other version, where one of the his default names is Red, while yours is Blue. But, if we look in the code, the actual default name for your rival is Sony, whereas your name can be Ninten. As an aside, a beta name for the rival was Gyarao, since he can own a Gyarados.

So, he's Green on the Japanese side, Blue on the English side, Shigeru Okido in the Japanese anime and Gary Oak in the English anime. He also has a ton of default names and other ones you can call him. So really, it doesn't matter at all.

Obtuse.....even hokey.
The two Nidorans are really good in the first gen because they evolve so early, and while their special stats are pretty mediocre, their movepool is huge. You can get them fully evolved before the second gym and from there teach them almost any TM worth a drat if you so choose.

True, but since I'm doing a small aside for all 151 Pokemon, I do it as a case by case basis. And yeah, the Nido's are not very good, you're supposed to evolve them quickly. When we get to the fully evolved forms, that's when the praises are sung, but for now, everything's a bit poo poo.

As far as I know, critical hits in this gen rely solely on base speed, so Eevee has around 10% chance to crit normally. It only takes the Paralysis drop into account for move order. I'll be going into it more for its own Side Note.

Anyway, :siren: PLEASE SUGGEST NICKNAMES FOR EVERYTHING :siren:

Can confirm that critical hit rate only considers base speed. This is a very good thing, because it means you can't boost your own crit rate by using Agility. That would be horrifying.

Also, go helix. The unsung best fossil, which everyone ignores for looking doofy as heck.
