Apparently I'm a millennial based on the standard definition of 'born in 1980 or later,' but I watched Demolition Man on a VHS I rented from Blockbuster, so maybe that definition isn't great.

The real standard is "Did your mom hate Beavis and Butthead when you were 13 or South Park?" if the former, you're Gen X, later, it's Millennial

No no no 82. 80 and 81 are Gen-X. I think we're supposed to be more cynical but a little less narcissistic.

Those plus Married with Children reruns. Wasn't allowed to watch those either.

Can we talk about how action movies in the eighties were just supremely better than the poo poo today.

generally the explosions and models being real was good but they are starting to show their age. especially movies that had mediocre writing and relied on heavy action.

Dredd and Mad Max are way better than most of the 80s action movies though.

Watched Terminator 2 recently and that poo poo holds up (I know it's 91, but close enough) except for one scene where the T-1000 is in a truck and is clearly a mannequin.

It only stands out because the rest of the effects are so good.

Imagine, this new generation growing up will look back with rose tinted lenses at Michael Bay and Marvel films. Movies in the future will be "poo poo" compared to them.

it's actually really fun to smoke a bowl and deconstruct the gently caress out of things. It also makes you appreciate the truly well done stuff more.

I think it's funny that people can't level criticisms or comments without being accused of a bunch of emotional attachment.

So, people who think 1990s movies are "old" probably have a mental breakdown if they're shown a silent movie.

Germstore posted:

The drive from the mental hospital has a lot of rear projection that looks a little off, but it works to make it a little surreal.

It's one thing when a special effect is just careless or poor quality like CGI The Rock in The Mummy Returns, but even a lot of really old movies have nice effects that aren't perfect, but don't pull you out of the movie either. I think part of the problem is too much stress on realism rather than making something work within its own context. That's why I like how in pre-CGI movies, you can tell there's a shot with a special effect or optical because it's a little grainy or the color looks slightly different from the previous shot.

There's also a bit where the T-1000 is hanging off the cop car they escape in from the mental hospital and it's so clearly a dummy being dragged for 2-3 seconds.

no im not 60 but i dont buy this definition of millennial being 1982+. My brother and I would tape Seinfeld and Larry Sanders on BBC2 because they were on too late to stay awake for, I was amazed when I saw my first mobile phone... and a year later everyone had one. But more importantly, not having the internet doesnt turn me into a panicking wreck. theres no way I have anything in common with a little squirt who laughs mockingly at SIMON SAYS DIE and who keeps looking at instagram during all the good bits of dialogue and action.
