there'a a vending machine-like thing in a randall's i go to occasionally that trades gift cards for cash, this isn't really a new thing

appears to be by the same guys who do the change-counting machines for getting rid of the big jar of coins that people tend to accumulate

change-counting machines that give preferred rates on gift cards

Put change in, get gift card, give gift card, gift card recipient puts gift card into gift card machine, gets slightly less money than if you gave them cash

All because you didn't want your nephew spending cash on drugs

I submitted 10,000 transactions. While my script was hammering the network, I was following blockchain.info's site, and thought they were not propagating in the bitcoin network. Woke up this morning surprised to see all 10,000 transactions were confirmed.
I also corrupted my wallet file, didn't have a backup, and lost the remaining coins I was testing with (not much, but still...). :(

i imagine it's a combination of "every program that handles the wallet.dat file has it's own way of writing nonstandard information and also doesn't handle situations where the data isn't exactly the way they want it very well"

in short

Heresiarch posted:

bonus butt question: i wonder how many wallet.dat-handling files fail ungracefully if there's unicode in the note field, and also how many accidentally write extra poo poo like newlines and carriage returns in the same field that break other applications

The idea is that a dude wants to sell their starbucks cards for cheap since they got them as a gift from their grandma and they are canadian so gently caress that, Tim Hortons for life! So they go to fold and sell their $25 cards for $15 dollars because that totally makes sense and then fold sells it to you for $20 and you, in turn, sell it for $22.5.

In reality the dude and grandma are the same person and they bought the cards using stolen CC numbers (and got paid in no-chargebacks coins) and now you're in the middle of a fraud investigation.

No, that's pretty much how those sites work. My wife's best friend is rich and got us a bunch of high value gift cards to out of town restaurants so we cashed them in at a loss and got amazon cards.

its an idiom. you say it when you can't answer how much time something will take.
as to your question, it depends if they paid a transaction fee above the spam transactions. the more you pay the more likely it will be picked up in the next block. you probably want to be spending at least 0.0002 btc/6 cents.
