The "people's democracies" were supposed to be societies where the workers and peasants were at the top of the social ladder, as opposed to the "bourgeois democracies" where the capitalists were on top. The Communists abolished most opposition parties, but kept the peasant parties, ostensibly to represent the peasants while the Communists represented the workers. In reality, legislatures were little more than window dressing; all decisions were made by the party Central Committee, or, more often, a small cadre including the Communist Party General Secretary and his closest advisers. The Democrat plays Peasant Parties for Operations, choosing the Communist event to occur first. pre:Action Queue The Communist to place 4 SPs in Farmer spaces, no more than 2 per space. As a housekeeping note, both sides can still benefit from having more players! If you signed up but didn't get a google doc invitation, please let me know and I'll rectify the situation. If you're reading the thread and want to play, feel free to join as a member of either side. It's not too late! As another housekeeping note, I've updated the second post a bit. I can be a little lazy about updating the turn history link records (though it's my intention this game to try to stay more on top of it). If it should get monstrously out of sync, please remind me to update. fantastic in plastic fucked around with this message at 07:48 on Jul 23, 2015 |

Workers who had formerly abandoned Solidarity or who were too young to have participated when the union was briefly legal began to flock to the union in Krakow. Within a matter of days, sentiment in the city had fully turned against the regime. The Democrat places 2 influence in Krakow, gaining control. pre:Action Queue The Communist to play an Event or Conduct Operations.

(click for huge) While many expected the Americans to support the democratic movements, President George Bush was a famously prudent man and took no action to intervene. The lack of foreign pressure in the early months of the year allowed the Communist regimes to continue to crack down on dissident activities and gain control of many important cities in Poland and Hungary. The Polish intellectuals, too, fell into line and began to publish articles and essays against Catholicism and in favor of dialectical materialism, which many took to be an attack on Solidarity. The Communist plays Prudence for 4 ops, placing 1 SP into Bialystok and gaining control, 1 SP into Polish Writers and gaining control, 1 S{ into Debrecen and gaining control, and 1 SP into Wroclaw. pre:Action Queue The Democrat to play an Event or Conduct Operations fantastic in plastic fucked around with this message at 18:47 on Jul 25, 2015 |

Despite the growth of anti-Solidarity sentiment in western Poland, the union was not going to give up without a fight. In Krakow, activists launched a series of day-long demonstrations which attracted thousands. Despite police attempts to cordon off the demonstrations and keep them within designated areas, the marches did change the minds of a few. Another demonstration came the following day, drawing still more popular support. The Democrat plays Roundtable Talks for Operations, conducting Support Checks! First support check in Wroclaw: 2 (roll) + 3 (ops value) + 2 (adjacent controlled spaces) = 7 - (3 * 2) = 1! The Communist loses 1 SP in Wroclaw. Second support check in Wroclaw: 3 (roll) + 3 (ops value) + 2 (adjacent controlled spaces) = 8 = (3 * 2) = 2! The Communist loses 1 SP in Wroclaw. The Democrat gains 1 SP in Wroclaw. pre:Action Queue fantastic in plastic fucked around with this message at 05:00 on Jul 26, 2015 |

For the Communist elite in Bydgoszcz, the lawless demonstrations in Wroclaw were the last straw. The Interior Minister and the army chiefs argued that if the illegal activities of Solidarity were to continue, things might get out of hand and there might be a need to re-institute martial law, a thought that inspired dread in others among the Polish Politburo. In order to avoid that step, Polish Prime Minister and former newspaper editor Mieczysław Rakowski appeared on state TV and radio to speak, announcing that the Communist Party was the legitimate authority in the country and reiterating that Solidarity was an illegal organization outlawed almost a decade ago. He asked that all Polish citizens not engaged in revolutionary activities to conduct a general demonstration in cities throughout the country and announced that the only amnesty for Solidarity members would come if the influential union leader, Lech Walesa, turned himself in to the authorities. In Gdansk and other Solidarity strongholds, the message was not taken well. As a wave of general strikes, marches, demonstrations, and counter-strikes, counter-marches, and counter-demonstrations washed over Poland, no one knew who would be left standing. A Power Struggle begins in Poland. The Communist controls 3 Spaces (Elite, Farmer, Intellectual) and receives 10 Power Struggle cards. The Democrat controls 3 Spaces (Worker, Church) and receives 10 Power Struggle cards. pre:Action Queue fantastic in plastic fucked around with this message at 02:09 on Aug 1, 2015 |

Despite the hard line taken by the Prime Minister, the arguments in the middle levels of government and society were different. Supporters of the regime, whether trade unionists, local politicians, or Party apparatchiks, tried to emphasize commitment to a shared, “national” program of reforms, while those speaking for Solidarity insisted on the introduction of trade union pluralism and genuine political competition. As the first serious challenge to Communist rule in years, the whole world looked on to see what the government's first move would be... Neither side raises the stakes. pre:Action Queue The Communist to play a Power Struggle card. The Democrat to attempt to match the suit of the played card.

I went back and made them timg tags for now, but future ones I'll hopefully make without breaking tables. I made them on a widescreen monitor and didn't realize, but when I checked on my work laptop I saw that they did. I agree that the Power Struggle doesn't lend itself to a format like this where there's a lot of latency (my work situation this week didn't help, too, but that shouldn't be a problem going forward).
