I love this idea of the solidly defined, fixed human nature, which transcends all history and every known society, despite all evidence to the contrary. Hrm. Quick question for everyone else: which country would you rather be oppressed in, China or America?

America of course, but I would hold a country that labels itself as a paragon of human rights to a very high standard which we are increasingly lowering in the name of counter terrorism and a security state. It is hypocrisy of the highest order, yes the degrees are different but the motivation is the same, the intelligence community just hasn't moved the overton window far enough to get away with it. Moreover, America is absilutely comparable when it comes to oppressing people outside of America, see CIA black sites and torture, which we only know about a fraction of. America's love of freedom is increasingly an illusion, a propaganda tool.

The US is held to a higher standard, which is why people make more forum threads making GBS threads on the US than they do on China despite the latter being far worse.

Nigh constant self-reflection and perpetual self-criticism is one of America's stealth strengths.

In america, Individual citizens grasping no power to change what they criticize are left alone, but this does not mean America as a state has effective self criticism or self reflection. Just that it's useless and might as well not exist. Incidents where people critical of the system began to gain power are always ended with three letter agency subversion and assassination.

Plus any number of news articles regarding China's exploitation of Africa (employ Chinese only, take the resources, bribe the politicians), and their current intent to do the same with the parts of Latin America that will let them in (see as reference their idea for another Panama Canal style construction through central america which will employ mostly Chinese people to trash a huge amount of land, for no benefit to the locals, because they bribed the right people).

FBI, but, Martin Luther King jr.

They'd been trying for years before they actually did it to get him dead by other means, including at one point writing a letter purportedly from another civil rights activist suggesting he should kill himself.

Okay so sending threatening letters = assassination? Unless you believe that James Earl Ray was a government agent/Loyd Jowers' testimony is reliable.

I mean yeah, sending those letters was dispicable and a definite low point in the history of the US government but comparing it to the assassination of political rivals you saw in places like the USSR and PRC is laughable.

Why do you disagree about a universal human nature? "The history of all hitherto existing societies is the history of class struggle" - it's right there on page one. It is you who say it, and impose those 19th-century European social theories onto others.

The take away from this is not whether or not China is worse than the US or that the US is equal to China but rather then presuming to tell other countries how to do things, we should consider what is happening in our own backyard.
