Max is the only character in the cartoons who actually ages, we've seen him go from being a kid to a teenager to a college student to an adult bringing his future wife home to meet his dad.

One day we will see Max become an old man and die and Goofy will once again be forced to watch the only person he loves die before him, haunted by the curse of his immortality and his inability to save others.

Goof is eternal.

This is the only time I've found Mrs. Goofy in one of the classic cartoons (Fathers Are People). You don't see her face, but since it's obscured by the hat, we can assume she is probably a normal human being :quagmire:

Goofs might just age like Elves. They reach maturity then stop aging. My theory is that Mrs. Goofy died during childbirth of their second child, which was stillborn.

That would explain why cats like Pete and PJ are always fat and cruel or willfully stupid, living in the shadow of the ageless Goofs makes them acutely aware of their own short time on Earth so they turn to hedonism and mindless consumption as a distraction and constantly resent the idyllic lives of people who have never known what it's like to see that first wrinkle on your wife's face or feel an ache in your legs and back when you get out of bed in the morning or realize that the problem with hot tubs isn't that they put too much water in them.

I assumed Pete was just a diabetic too stubborn to accept treatment. Hence, the obesity, foul temper, and amputated leg in the earlier cartoons.

Trivia time: The actor who originally voiced Pete was Billy Bletcher, who has almost 500 credits. He did voice work for Disney, Warners, and MGM for 30 years in addition to playing bit parts in hundreds of live-action films.

Other parts he voiced included the Big Bad Wolf in The Three Little Pigs, Owl Jolson's father in I Love to Singa, the Pincushion Man in Balloonland, Porky Pig until Mel Blanc took over, and the voice of the Mayor of Munchkinland in The Wizard of Oz.

Maybe despite being a literal human with a dog's head his species ages like real dogs, from 0-puberty in the first year then just linger in adulthood for like 8 years before slipping into old age. Only like take that and make it into human years or something I don't know

Disney characters will outlive all of us even if they haven't been relevant since my grandma was born

Also why did they not draw him with ears in the 50s cartoons? Like did he spend some time in a dogfighting ring and get them cropped off or something? It made him look even less like a dog and more like a human with a grotesque flappy muzzle ugh

If I remember correctly, that was because Disney's short films were on the decline at the time, and as a way to breathe new life into Goofy, they tried turning him into an every-man character. That's why he looks much more human in those films, and why he's got a wife and son, and is called "George" rather than Goofy.

Yeah I remember the George Goof thing. I can't help but wonder if they tried to cut animation costs by literally cutting his ears off, because animating long ears is a gigantic bitch and there were usually an entire race of "Goofies" in those films who would've all needed their long ears animated whipping around and stuff. What a dumb loving idea considering Mickey Mouse was about as everyman as it gets, only somehow even more boring.

I guess what I'm saying is that every post 1930s Disney cartoon that didn't have Donald in it was boring neutered slop and MGM/Warner Bros. owned them hard
