So...

http://www.fox.com/so-you-think-you-can-dance

So You Think You Can Dance is back for season 12 and it will look a little different than you remember. We've got new judges (Jason DeRulo and Paula Abdul in addition to creator and regular Nigel Lythgoe), a new format, more performances, and the ever wonderful Cat Deeley!

For whatever reason, this season the Top 20 dancers were divided into two teams: Team Stage and Team Street. Dancers had to audition for a particular team when dancing for the judges at the beginning. Though there are teams of dancers, we will still be seeing different styles within each overarching group (Broadway, Jazz, Contemporary, etc. for Stage/Popping, B-Boy, Krump, etc. for Street). Based on the first episode with the Top 20 performing, it looks like it will bring new life to show since choreographers are getting groups of 3 or more dancers and/or same-gender pairs for routines. So, we're finally getting away from the guy/girl romantic choreography that was so prevalent in past seasons.

Team Stage
Travis Wall - Captain :woop:

Alexia Meyer

Darion Flores
:allears:

Derek Piquette

Edson Juarez

Gaby Diaz :siren:Tapper:siren:

Hailee Payne

Jim Nowakowski

Kate Harpootlian

Marissa Milele

Moises Parra

Team Street
Twitch - Captain :woop:

Alain "Hurrikane" Lauture

Ariana Crowder

Asaf Goren

Burim "B1" Jusufi

Eddie "Neptune" Eskridge

Jana "Jaja" Vankova

Jessica "JJ" Rabone

Lily Frias

Megan "Megz" Alfonso

Virgil Gadson
:allears:

Yorelis Apolinario

These two teams will be battling it out throughout the season, but there's still only one winner - America's favorite dancer!

I'll probably add more info to this, but I just wanted to get a thread going since there's a lot to talk about with all the new changes.

I was apprehensive about the Stage vs. Street theme at first but if they are ultimately just trying to diversify their dancers more and everyone is still dancing in every style I'm okay with it. Despite all the changes this season (Jason Deruuulo) this last episode reminded me that this show deserves to be on TV regardless of all of the tinkering they do.

I'm OK with all the changes so far (besides Paula*). But I think I mentioned in the last thread I'd still love and watch this show if it was back to back dance routines without judging or competition!

The episodes so far seem well crammed with routines. I'm typically more biased to the street styles, so if we get to see more street routines and styles (and of a higher quality) because of the changes I'll be happy.

TEN YEARS AGO THIS STARTED! That is crazy. But it really does deserve it for me.

No real favourites so far (besides already loving Jaja), but some real good dancers no question.

*Paula - I dont particularly dislike her, but her comments are so wishy washy and wandering, she might as well not bother.

The last time I saw Paula judge was on American Idol, so her relative coherence here is nice and makes me think that (obviously) dancing is more in her comfort zone than singing.

No real favorites so far, but the routines have been fine. The only dude I know needs to go ASAP is Asaf, even though I'll miss his absurd attractiveness. He's just not on the level, and the complaining is getting old. Also wish they'd get rid of the back-from-commercial bumpers with the team captains saying generic platitudes to the dancers, but it's easy enough to fast forward through.

Thought the Jaja and Jim hip-hop routine this week was the best.

Jaja and Jessica are the only two I actually remember who they are. The stage side is completely forgettable other than that Asian guy who I don't really like.

But Jaja's my pick to win this.

Also, I concur with the general Paula sentiments.

I love the new changes. Absolutely love them. This is the kind of change that will hopefully keep the show fresh and around for a few more seasons.

I also love Paula and Jason. The only really bad thing about Paula is her love of Asaf, and she may be the only reason he's still on because there were so many green milers that were better than him and could pick up choreography. I know Standing O was probably not the "right body type" but she deserved to be the swing over Asaf. Same with the krumper that got let go (Lil B?). But the real tragedy is the loss of Hurrikane. Dude was such a RIDICULOUS locker oh my God. Neptune got 0 screen time but it making the most of it, he stood out the most to me. Same with Derek.

Gabi, Jim, and Kate are my Team Stage favorites. JaJa, Neptune, Megs, and Virgil and my Team Street favorites.

I really like the changes, except that we ended up with no ballroom dancers and only 1 tap.

I have a lot of favorites so far:
Street:
Jaja
Yorelis
Megz
JJ
Virgil

Stage:
Edson
Jim

Most of the rest of stage doesn't stand out to me.

I'm not a huge fan of Burim and I can't wait for Asaf to be gone.

Edit: Atticus I agree about Standing O, I hope she comes back if we get another season. I think they brought in Asaf to keep a balance of guys on the street side, though, and not necessarily to skip over her.

I agree, but this was the producer's fault. None of us saw the current format coming, they sold it as "contemporary vs hip-hop" the entire way until this week. The unveiling was cool but likely discouraging to other types of dancers. Hell, the ballroom guy who made the Top 20 (SYTYCD Canada winner, too) left because he thought that's how it'd be as well.

Same.

And there's no gender balance this year so I don't see how that's possible.

Also, ABDC is back. They filmed their first episode yesterday and it aired the 29th. The crews are all champions except one new crew:

Super Cr3W (:swoon:)
Quest Crew
We Are Heroes
I.aM.mE
Elektrolytes
Kinjaz

All the old crews aren't completely in-tact and have added new members. Notably, Super Cr3w has added Neguin (:aaaaa:), We Are Heroes has added Marie Poppins (!!!) and I.aM.mE has added Bebo from Phunk Phenomenon and a member of 8 Flavahz.

They really did a poor job of explaining that this season wouldn't be all that different than past seasons with the exception that there's now more variety in choreography thanks to no gender balance and nonsymmetrical pairings.

It's kind of a shame the high-concept ones are naturally so much more memorable. As I watched the seasons, the routines I liked most were usually ballroom.

This is also my favorite routine of the show (and the First Lady named it one of her favorites too :woop:)! Kayla poured herself into it and Kupono was just so menacing, yet gentle. It's perfection and I'm always sad when it gets ignored for other contemporary routines in highlights and things.

Also a fan of:

My Chick Bad - Lauren & Twitch - I'm SO glad Lauren was able to pull this off considering the song choice

After Party - Amy & Fik Shun - I just love their energy in this. You can tell they're both having a great time.

You Know How I Feel - Fik Shun & Melanie - Also super fun.

Angry Vulture - Jordan & Tadd - I'm not sure how much is the song vs. choreography because I love this song. Also, Jordan's legs :eyepop:

(Guilty Pleasure Routine) Silver Screen - Malece & Jade - I love that they nail every *hit* also that fan

EDIT: How could I forget Outta Your Mind - Alex & Twitch?!?! - No words needed.

I am so beyond baffled by Asaf. Of all the people they could have brought back, they brought the one that can't even choreograph tying his shoes in the morning. At least he kept his mouth shut and busted his rear end this week. He doesn't deserve to be there but if he keeps putting his all into trying, I wont out right hate him. Burim isn't as bad but when it comes to his style, I've yet to see anything but power moves. I don't care how nice your air flares are if that's all you got.

One of the people that I'm really sad didn't make it was that tall blond ballroom dancer, Ryan Raffloer, that auditioned in New York. There was just something about him to me that caught my attention. The casual stance as the music started and the way he lifted his head up...I dunno, he just had that 'it' factor for me https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ReA7Qa0Cr8M

Not a fan of Jason Dorulo and while Paula talks to damned much, I do think she's better on here than on American Idol. I miss the guest judge format. Well...I just miss certain guest judges. I need Jessie Tyler Ferguson on the show. They have to find away to make this happen.

The part that I miss about the old format is the connection the dancers get to form. I think Jaja and Jim would have been a fantastic pair to have through the season. I do seem to know more of the dancers as well. Usually this early in the season I'll remember maybe 4-5 name and then rest are "that blond girl" or "that short guy".

All in all, I'm enjoying the season. It's JaJa's to lose.

I can't believe they brought him back, either. What's the point? He can't be choreographed and his routines are incredibly dumbed down. At least with Cyrus, he tried and afterwords you thought "well, he tried". With Asaf, it's "did he try?" The judges critiques of him are TERRIBLE, too. Marissa deserved a ton of props for trying but instead she got "you should've engaged with your partner" and the like where he got "look at you, trying! Good for you!"

Neptune is the best.

What I appreciated about him this week was that he finally shut his loving mouth and did the work. He spent extra time practicing, didn't give any lip and instead of trying to play 'woe is me', just buckled down and did his best to do his job. It still sucked but at least he didn't come off flippant while rehearsing it.

The problem with the judges doing much other than patting him on the head for trying is that they know he shouldn't be there, I'm sure he knows he shouldn't be there, the choreographers know he shouldn't be there and you can't just poo poo on the guy and beat him down every week. The idiot tween audience needs to get past his abs and bad boy attitude and send him home. At least it's a different format and some poor girl isn't stuck with him every week.

I also just realized that there are no ballroom dancers this season. That's lame. Now I'm really mad they didn't bring that cutie, tall blond boy in.

Hailey and Jaja were kind of boring, even though they're pretty much top of their respective teams. It might be because they're routine was mostly side by sides, with almost nothing nothing dynamic between them. They might as well have been dancing in different rooms for the most part.

Yes, Kate. I would also be scared if my life depended on Asaf's dance ability. Even ignoring him, the routine wasn't that great either.

Virgil and Gabby oh my god.

Edson and Megz were pretty good

As for the elimination, Marissa probably didn't deserve to leave yet, but Asaf definitely did.

They're getting rid of 2 street dancers and 2 stage dancers next week, so that's gonna be a very sad bloodbath. I wondered if this was FOX shortening their order... luckily, it's not! They've done this before since switching to the once-a-week format.

That Drake routine still blows my mind NOW. Most of their routines are so good. With a show that unfortunately took ICONic Boyz/8 Flavahz to finales, RNG really proved that kid crews can be really good/creative. Every kid crew had an adult choreographer but RNG's really pushed them hard.

Yeah in the preroll there was some lift where Asaf was holding her upside down on his back by her arms and that definitely didn't make it into the final routine.
