I'm not disagreeing with ya'll, I"m just trying to learn. (Can someone fill me in on what WIndows 10 is and why its free and a *big deal*?)

I WANT a SSD, I Just want to do it right. I don't want to get one so small I can't do any of my gaming on it, but I also have like no money since Mean Ole Dog House didn't give me his $400 card for $40.

Go to SH/SD and get their recommendation on parts, for real. When I built this computer literally ever component I decided to get myself and not research there have been the ones which were flaky and/or have failed, they're basically wizards.

As for Windows 10 I've been biased against it ever since I heard about this in the tech preview:

http://www.techworm.net/2014/10/microsofts-windows-10-permission-watch-every-move.html

and I haven't heard anything about this not being the case for release so until I hear otherwise, I'm going to assume it is

tl;dr the Windows 10 tech preview basically came with a mandatory keylogger which phones back everything you do with a computer to MS

Well my PC is pretty decent for being built 5 years ago. It has been able to crush everything up until the Witcher 3. I haven't played it yet, but from what I hear it wouldn't be able to run at high levels on my PC. The biggest problem I have are long load times and aging HDDs.

Its just time for an upgrade, really.

Also gently caress that spider PC, that is the stuff of nightmares.

lol you are loving stupid

it was a tech preview, not even a release candidate. it wasnt intended for any kind of production machine and only erxisted to gather feedback on how people are using it and all that poo poo was in the license. of course the keylogging/reporting aren't going to be in the final build

Anyone who doesn't think an SSD is necessary doesn't have an SSD, or has an SSD from back when they sucked. If you're worried about their tendency to bork under unexpected power loss pay the extra for a Vector 180 or similar drive.

Maybe this is the wrong place to ask this question, but what the hell?

My desktop is getting up there in age (5-6 years old) and I'm upgrading it a couple parts at a time. I'm buying a SSD to run my OS. I also use my computer for designing/engineering so I run SolidWorks and AutoCAD. Should those programs be installed on the SSD as well? should the part/assembly files by saved on the SSD for faster reading/writing/loading, or would those be better on my secondary HDD? If anyone could answer this, I'd appreciate it. At very least, I trust Goons know their computer hardware.

install everything on the ssd unless you can't

120-250 gigs will be plenty for almost everyone who doesnt intend to install a bunch of games or store a big media library on it and those are perfectly reasonable reasons to get a secondary mechanical disk

That has been the case for every RC and preview since windows 2000 or further, dont worry. It is definitely something you want to know about for the release but there is no way in hell that would be the case then. We'll know in a week.

then it speaks to MS's tone deafness that in spite of the concern over that feature they still haven't publically addressed it

The have made a statement on the information collection, and it's basically that they aren't turning it off for the preview, but it is specifically for the preview. The section isn't in the release EULA or even the RCs. I'm not sure what more you want.

there's a FISA court order compelling tech companies to put in back doors to almost all their poo poo specifically for the purposes of government access/surveillance and what's more there's a gag order in place too meaning the tech companies are legally obliged to say they have nothing of the sort when asked

pretty much any major thing you use (like say Skype) has an intercept built in

this whole malarky over MS stealing your info or whatever is funny as gently caress in that light. FWIW Microsoft is strongly resisting the NSA's data collection.

Both Google and Microsoft are involved with lawsuits against the government trying to fight it. iirc in 2013 they were even both plaintiffs in the same suit

idk generally I think those things shouldn't exist but at the same time I don't think any one person can hide themselves successfully from the resources of many. Like if the NSA really wanted to put surveillance on you there's nothing you can really do about it. The problem I have is that there's just broad powers with no real controls and they can just watch whoever and pass nude photos around the office and high five each other.
