There was also that time they had a white guy play an Arab Muslim after 9/11 whose character was that he was disillusioned with America because everyone viewed him as a terrorist and treated him like poo poo. Naturally, the audience hated him and other wrestlers told him to gently caress off and go back where he came from and the audience cheered for them. Then he actually became a terrorist. So there's that. What I'm saying is WWE is pretty great y'all should watch it.

I don't know about the post-attitude era crop but go and watch any youtube interview with any wrestler, especially the poorly produced "shoot" ones. It's carny as gently caress and every response the wrestler gives you can see them staring into their eyelids trying to find the angle to generate themselves some heat. Now that said HH was always known even among self-serving, mercenary shitheels as being one of the greatest of them all. He was even more mercenary than either McMahon, Bischoff/Russo and has nearly tanked every promotion in existence by a mixture of walk-out threats, politicking, and whining to make sure he was never out of the limelight for a second. I guess that more makes him the most successful in the business since he managed to repeatedly upstage wrestling promoters, who might be the purest distillation of snake oil in the universe. It's probably not a surprise to anyone in the business about him boning his daughter or saying friend of the family a lot, but everyone probably understood that because of the length of time he managed to make sure wrestling was synonymous with his image, burying Hogan was the same as burying wrestling which might possibly put them out of a job, especially if anyone thought they were the rat. Which is probably why the WWE is going full Benoit on the history wipe - if the first thing people think of when they thing wrestling is Hogan, and the first thing they think of Hogan right now is him saying that he "hates niggers" a bunch, it's incredibly damaging to a business that is literally made out of the pure carnie dust of marketing and PR.
