If you are completely disassembled but then put together again did you truly ever die? Is death even real? Like, what if souls are real and every time you teleport a new guy is created and a new soul is created or what happens if you teleport but then the teleporter shuts down and your molecules just get frozen in transit and then 20 years later someone activates the teleporter and you are revived and

If you spend an extended period of time living on the holodeck and eating holodeck food, when you finally leave, amino acids scattered throughout your body disappear and you melt into a puddle of bones and goop.

Lest we forget: Gene Roddenberry was an unrepentant horndog (a man after my own heart) and originally wanted the character of Troi to have four boobs.

Star Track Trivia: * The Ferengi originally had giant noses instead of giant ears, but their character design was changed at the last second so as not to appear anti Semitic. * PHASER is an acronmyn for "Plasmitic Heat lASER" * The show's creators really did their research: Within the show, the fictional speed "Warp factor 10" is actually faster than the speed of light. This means that any ship to achieve Warp 10 automatically goes back in time, just like in Einstein's theory. * Capt Janeway was not the first female Starfleet captain. The unnamed Black woman captain of the USS Saratoga in Star Trek IV beat her by almost 9 years! * Spocks are a fictional race dedicated to logic, but Tuvok often shows irritation when arguing with his best friend Nelax. * The team behind Star Trek were avid anime fans and often worked references to their favorite anime, "Dirty Pair" into the show. This is most noticeable in the episode where Troi appears on screen wearing Yuri's costume from Dirty Pair and accidentally sits on a button to launch missiles, destroying an inhabited moon. *The telepathic thing between Troi and Ricker that appeared in the pilot was actually in the script for every episode, but removed during editing. *The character of Capt Picard never farts even once over the course of the series. This was in Patrick Stewart's contract and if he farted during the filming of any scene they were obligated to reshoot. * When the series was released in HD for the first time, viewers could see the strings holding up the Enterprise D model.

The idea that you die when you're remade in a teleporter is pretty stupid and pre-supposes there's some part of you that can't be broken down into a simple chemical process. Consciousness is an illusion, our thoughts are merely chemical and electrical impulses imperfectly formed thanks to our fleshy parts. I'd assume they've reached the point where an exact 1:1 copy can be made, down to a molecular level, meaning that the question of whether or not you're the same person is akin to religious mumbo jumbo on whether or not there is a soul. There isn't. It's the same person going in and coming out.

Ddraig posted:The idea that you die when you're remade in a teleporter is pretty stupid and pre-supposes there's some part of you that can't be broken down into a simple chemical process. Counterpoint: if you were to make an exact atomic replica of you, you would not suddenly have access to that individual's subjective experience, even if he or she had all your memories. Neither would your subjective experience travel to the exact duplicate if the original is destroyed. Whether or not you believe in a soul, there's pretty strong evidence against the idea that an individual can "survive" being atomized even if you put them back together using the same atoms.

we know that in star trek your aware throughout the teleportation process and that you don't die. that's dealt with in enterptise episode with the creator of the teleporter. in real life who cares because we're all going to be long dead before we can teleport people
