If I could do anything I would inherit a bunch of money and live a life of leisure. Otherwise I'd stay in my current career, the IT thing has worked out well.

Somehow I always ended up with math professors who explained things by rushing through proofs as though they were talking to other math professors instead of a bunch of kids sitting there having no clue what any of it actually means. I muddled through the courses knowing that you needed to do certain procedures or certain problems on tests, but it wasn't until a few years out of school that I revisited this stuff and learned what it actually means. Once someone explains this stuff properly vs barfing a bunch of greek letters on a blackboard it's amazing how simple and useful it actually is.

Yeah I don't have any first hand experience with either one but I hear amazing things about khan academy and that better explained site looks good too also you might be able to find a student that might tutor you for cheap but it's always a crapshoot whether or not they'll be any good. it's a crapshoot with professors too but at least you can use rate my professor and research before you enroll

I'm on the brink of a serious career move in my late 30s and it could all come crashing down which is why I'm posting at 3.27am instead of sleeping. Basically I've been trapped in a dead end job for 7 years. By trapped I mean I live in a country where you are literally indentured and changing jobs without emigrating is impossible, so I've watched my career in a creative field implode while I shuffle into middle age. Applications in adjacent fields have been met with complete radio silence. So I'm short of choices outside of taking some huge risks. As it happens, I've decided I'm going to be an entrepreneur. I've developed two solid business plans in completely unrelated fields, but both make a ton of sense for this market. In the process, I've started making connections in the local business university and with a few Angel investor types. And now I've been handed a golden opportunity. Without going into detail, a big investor saw my stuff and wants me to put together a plan for his stuff so he can convince other investors to back him. His business idea is amazing and if the whole thing comes together my life will be very different quite shortly. If it goes badly I'll possibly end up destitute also shortly. So uh follow your dreams, think blue sky, really out the box and believe in yourself. Trump 2016.

I recommend paper engineering because 1 things being made out of paper (or materials made on a paper machine) is on the rise 2 if you go to SUNY-ESF your tuition is free 3 actually the chemistry of wood and paper is interesting if you like o chem and 4 you will get paid a lot of money to have the degree and watch the paper machines print money while making sure the numbers on the screen dont go too much up or down

AdvancesMONKEY posted:Whats the safest trade? Welding is pretty badass but I bet after doing it for years you will inevitably ruin your eyes. Welders also have to travel for work, a lot of work is seasonal, and pay for jobs where you aren't 180 miles away from the world in loving North Dakota outside welding oil pipes in the sun pay poorly. It's really not that great. Of the trades electrician is probably the best because it's more year round and more indoors and more in civilization. Welding also gets you crushed, burned or blown up sometimes. The good thing about welding is that it's impossible to be the world's second best welder, literally every one of them thinks he's loving amazing and no one does the job better. If electrical is too scary then try diesel mechanic. It's indoors, work isn't seasonal, and when the economy is bad usually trucking increases and places with money buy more power generators and things like that (like hospitals and other facilities that need power if the grid might fail them) so you still have work which is a big problem with a lot of trade jobs (no houses being built and you're a residential electrician? Hope you like unemployment). The main drawback is that for some reason this field attracts the most inbred loving morons of any trade job which is saying something and a disproportionate number of these jobs are in smaller towns because that's where diesel repair places build their garages / where their owners live because of the aforementioned inbred hick thing. Also the #1 school for it is in loving Wyoming. If that's not a good fit sign on with a frieght or passenger railroad. Excellent federal pension for most of those guys that you can draw at 60, union work, and if you work your way up to engineer or trainmaster or something like that you can make 90k a year pretty easily, especially with the bigger railroads. Drawback here is that many of the jobs are on-call and have you driving a train for 8 hours to a place, then staying at the company hotel there, then going back, and it sucks not being in your home like that. Everything in the railroad runs on seniority so you just take whatever job you can get, then in a few years transfer to be a conductor (if your railroad still has those, it's basically an engineer's assistant on freight rail), then in a few year transfer to engineer. You'll start at like 18 an hour doing some random loving thing, conductor is like 35, engineer is 50 to 60, except usually they are paid by the trip not by the hour, but that's about what it works out to. These are the top 3 trades IMO. Electrical, diesel mechanic, railroad. In order of lowest to highest average pay, as well as in order of highest to lowest amount of knowledge to do the job and pride you can take in your work. raton fucked around with this message at 04:06 on Jul 31, 2015 |
