In my case I suck at everything else so I still get a blurry blob but at least it's perfectly focused. A Bahtinov Mask is a cover with slits in it that goes over the tube inlet. It diffracts the incoming light in such a way that two diffraction spikes form an x shape, and a third is vertical between them at perfect focus. When improperly focused, the vertical bar will be shifted left or right of the center of the X, and moving the dials will move the vertical diffraction spike. The Wikipedia page explains it expertly and simply, and has some great visuals. Also, I'd love to know how your galaxy photos came out!

I am thinking over moving into a pre-sales engineering role since I am sick of how my team is being treated at the current job. After ~8+ years in ops/oncall roles, I really like the idea of not having to carry a pager anymore. More customer facing work, but it should be good for my career in the longer term.

This company ONLY does Software Development, and I'm being hired to fill a specific niche of being the go between for the Programmers and the Operations guys, since the Programmers and Ops guys keep running into issues and pointing fingers. They brought me in for the interview and I solved a major problem within 5 minutes, the two lead programmers just turned their heads when I tossed a possible solution, looked at each other, and nodded. I'll take that as a good sign.

I've been doing all my focusing the hard way, looking through the camera viewfinder and just squinting and manually tweaking the focus ring. That mask sounds like it makes things infinitely easier! So far this is the best I've managed with my gear, but it turned out cool so i'm okay with that. I've dabbled in exposure stacking and getting multiple hours worth of star trails as well, but I need more batteries to properly do that.

I missed the last two thirds of the July chat thread but thanks to this OP I know exactly what is going on. I took Friday off for my kids birthday and we took her to a local theme park. As we were driving on the freeway during non-peak hour traffic we were in the middle lane, to the right of the passing lane and HOV lane. Up ahead I saw some abrupt brake lights so I preemptively slowed down and made sure I had an out at each angle. To my rear left the J-Body cavalier was not so lucky. A HUGE railroad tie was chilling across the passing lane. They tried to swerve where they could but they were too close to other cars. Rather than wiping out one of the people next to them they took as much space as they could in their own lane and drilled this thing at somewhere between 60 and 70 MPH at impact. I caught the sight in my side mirror to see the left side of the car catch air and the front left tire/everything just disappear. Looked like they were able to make it off of to the shoulder but drat did it make a BANG Drive safe, drive aware, and always leave yourself an out when traveling at freeway speeds internet friends!

Right now that's basically the one big investment I still need to make to start doing proper galaxy / star stuff. The 18 - 55mm kit lens works for wide shots, but I want to take photos of Andromeda and stuff

Andromeda is pretty god damned huge. I'm not sure if an 18-55 would get it well, but a 75-300 should do you well. Here's a good size-reference comparing it to the moon: Obviously it's been photoshopped in, but that's about how large it is in the sky compared to Luna The only problem is light absorption, but huge ISO and long exposure will take care of that, as you no doubt know. Other DSOs, you absolutely need a telescope for. Andromeda just happens to be a special snowflake that wants to come say hi at 200,000 mph.

I've got a 70 - 300 telephoto lens, so I could mayyybe swing it, but i'm worried about blur from the combo of high zoom and non-tracking mount that I currently have It's definitely a serious goal of mine though. Just gotta keep putting back money and try to find the ideal setup that's not too expensive but still high quality enough to have auto tracking and good lens quality. Word. Most AP nerds can do some serious damage with just a badass mount and a 75-300. The mount is sooooooo much more important than the OTA. https://www.cloudynights.com has the best deals on used mounts. I got a Celestron CG-5 for $450 from there and it's served me incredibly well.
