Gosh I hope the NSA enjoys watching my eighth run in XCOM: Enemy Within.

That's disrespectful. They prefer 'little person erotica'.

But everyone liked 7.

Yup.

Windows 8 wasn't a 'mismanagement of the press', and neither was Vista. Vista was bloated, and Windows 8 was Microsoft's go at the Apple / Nintendo mentality of 'you will take these lovely new features that got approved through a poorly managed consumer opinion testing process, and you will like them, and if you don't like them gently caress you we are the future and you're going to like them.'
They were disliked appropriately on merit of their own virtues; the press didn't have to spin so much as simply report.

I went through start menu > settings > privacy last night to turn off anything I felt was too invasive. As it happened, it was all of the settings. I think my favorite one, which guarantees I will never have a phone that runs Win10, was the one that pretty much said 'allow apps to access and read your SMS, and send SMS if they want'.

Android phones can do this too, the permission are just per-app rather than a single switch in the settings.

Per app, and at least in my experience, when you're installing something from the Play store, it warns you pretty clearly how the app is going to violate your privacy before you install it. Lesson to take from this I suppose is "never, ever just go with 'express settings' on the install of anything, when you aren't getting all the details at the point of that decision."
