Generation X are the boomers kids from their first marriage in their 20's when they were broke, that ended badly; they've helped them get though college at least but have mostly forgotten and left with a lot of sullen moody emotional issues; Millennials are the kid they had with their much younger second or third wife years later (thanks to viagra- with dads track record mom wanted to lock down the money) when they had a lot more money but were older and less involved, who were plunked down in front of an iPad in the trophy house they plan to die in

No college degree is a golden ticket these days, you have to go out there and hustle and be flexible and be willing to take opportunities as they come. I have an uncle who just retired after 40 years as an accountant earning a comfortable six figure income who's been miserable his entire life

momerath posted:can anyone explain hipsters to me? like does anyone know any of them personally? i grew up in new york and i see them all the time but i just can't wrap my mind around the culture The entire purpose of their dress and behavior is to be hard to understand It's a youth subculture, so if you are of the appropriate age and get indoctrinated enough to be able to recognize other successful members of the culture you get to keep feeling like one of the cool kids in school for several more years, with all the benefits thereof including girls dating you Past versions of alternative youth culture music and fashion/lifestyle movements have had a strong element of political involvement, like protesting the Vietnam war or championing the civil rights movement (think "rage against the machine" in the 1990's); this current trend doesn't have much of that, it really is just a bunch of kids with too much money in their $5000 apt in Brooklyn being kind of weird and exclusive and dressing badly.

The not-rich Brooklyn neighborhood I lived in was solidly middle class and safe, there was a Macy's and a Starbucks and a shopping district, old timers would complain it wasn't all I-talian which was fun, I guess it was people like me from the Midwest going to school causing that change originally- But when rent prices next door suddenly went up to $5000 bucks it was a bunch of weirdly out of shape bearded oddly dressed fixed gear bike riders and their plastic frame glasses suspenders girlfriends smirking weirdly who were paying for it. Like there was a factory churning them out somewhere. Other millennial non-hipsters watched confused. A bunch of jersey shore-ish locals into weightlifting who grew up in the area would get angry as beardy mcglassestattooneck gave them attitude and really awkward imbalanced shoving matches would break out. I saw a guy (in a newsboy cap and suspenders) get out of his car and break a plastic shower curtain rod over a much larger guys head one day over a parking spot Imagine Lena Dunham and J-Wow screaming at each other in a coffee shop and Lena Dunham somehow winning

I knew a guy who introduced himself to strangers with "I earn $200k a year" which he did, for one year, before quitting his job to go to a friend's start up without pay His fiancé said she earned $100k+ on her dating profile when they met; what she meant was "my parents bought me a $60k lexis once and give me spending cash, I don't work, my parents are spooky and ethnic and controlling, dating me means dating my dad p much" He thought she'd support him futzing around on his laptop at home and she thought the same They ended up with zero actual income in a small horrible apt having fights on Facebook
