Here are a couple in the same vein to get started. Feel free to check these in paint. The cross-sections of both crosses are the same color: The green and blue spirals are the same color: A and B are the same color:

Does anyone have a concise explanation for how these work? I assume it has something to do with how your peripheral vision detects movement, as the apparent motion increases if you unfocused your eyes but disappears if you concentrate on the right part of picture.

Haha, holy poo poo that's wild. I was watching the one without the guides and could only see it clockwise, I looked counter-clockwise one with the guides and went back up, and then I could only see it counter-clockwise, and then flipped it back again by looking at the guided one again. Like it takes the shortest glance at the guided one to flip how my brain sees it. This is nuts.

I don't get this one. Is it that two of them appear to be concave and two appear to be convex, but they actually aren't?

Nostradingus posted:I don't get this one. Is it that two of them appear to be concave and two appear to be convex, but they actually aren't? Um...not sure what you're asking, I guess? "Don't get" meaning what? Are you saying that they don't seem like they're moving to you (just kinda slowly swimming slightly back and forth), or that you're not sure what's causing it? Yeah, they're shaded differently to make it look like you're seeing them from slightly different angles...

Here are another two I like, these work by increasing your eyes' distance to your screen (may take a foot or two), or, for some people, by squinting. Here's Marilyn/Einstein: These two switch places: This is not really an illusion, but have you ever seen an animated magic eye? Schurik has a new favorite as of 21:26 on Aug 27, 2015 |

Magic eye stuff counts, right? This one's my favourite since it's a proper textured 3D model thing and not just "random flat static poo poo floating off the screen"

Forgall posted:I never see anything in those magic eye things. What's the deal with them? You see how the pattern repeats horizontally? Unfocus your eyes (look past your screen) until the pattern overlaps once. A part of the image should bulge out to form a separate image. Try it on a non-moving one first though. Here's a kinda-sorta demonstration of what it should look like (without the movement of course), which is the hangup for most people I think.

Holy crap, I just learned how to see magic eye images. I can unfocus my eyes at will, and if I do that I see three discrete depth layers in this image, none of which are an interesting shape. If I refocus my eyes a little they suddenly form into two depth layers that form a dolphin Thanks, Schurik! edit: if I unfocus super hard I can see four layers
