Character retrieval abilities only work for the active player. I think that's one of the rules from the book that gets overlooked, and the wording on the player cards doesn't help much.

I'd much prefer if people waited until the task is announced before formally going in or out. It's not a major deal, but I'd rather the choosing player not be influenced too much by people going in blind. Plus some of the cards don't have rolls involved so it may not even apply.
