I'm seriously confused why everyone is all 'grrr qr codes'. They're super neat and could be used for all sorts of things. Even for the lazy shits who use it for web addresses, its much faster than manually typing out a website. (I got poo poo to do man). I mean sure, people could abuse it to pull up goatse or some juvenile thing, but most qr readers prompt the user what the link is prior to directing to that, so problem solved. Could do all sorts of things, AR games, banking, secretly linking porn to your coworkers to get them fired, the possibilities are endless. So why the hate

people make fun of them because they're put on billboards by insane ad executives who actually believe that someone, anyone is going to take out their phone, open the app, point it at the sign and then consume their bamf. there's also an insane view that doing that is better than just typing in an url or googling a thing, which it obviously isn't for a million reasons obviously barcodes have applications in all kinds of industry but expecting potential customers to scan one for literally no reason is crazy qr codes are also particularly ugly for barcodes but its my hope that 2d barcodes can store a much higher density of information in the future allowing whole files to be transferred or broadcast visually which i think would be pretty neat

But they would have to be insanely dense and long to get that kind of information off of them. Increase the area, bam, less length, more girth.

QR codes are amazing for that, I'm putting serial number, machine name, original location (Users won't stop moving them around) and purchase date in a nice little square sticker on the back of the cases. It's not going to stop people from moving them around, but I'll at least be able to find out where it came from when someone breaks them out in the shop.

And since its a qr code, its much easier to just scan down the panel rather than trying to make out what scribbles or handwriting that fades over time. And with the built in redundancy check of qr codes, its def. better. I mean I guess that's just cherrypicking facts but. The Linux kernel uses QR code for its error messages. When you get a kernel panic you can't usually take a screen shot of the error since you're computer is nothing but a broken calculator at that point so folks used to take pictures of the error message instead. Grainy pixelated text is hard to read but a QR code works great.

It's a lot easier to have the info entered into our ticketing system and correlated to the software profile when someone breaks the drat thing. Figuring out what it is and where it came from by scanning it's tag is going to be really nice. There's only so much you can do remotely, and popping the info up on my phone is a lot easier than hauling a laptop down to the shop every time a machine falls out of a truck and stops booting.
