Problem description:
I've been running the same system for approx. 2.5 years. In the last year or so I've been getting Driver error messages in windows for my gfx card and black screen crashes/slowdowns when running a game.
Driver error in windows is as stated, I get a pop-up in the bottom right corner stating the graphics driver has been restarted - sometimes open windows will get closed when this happens or I'll get a brief black screen which clears after a moment - background sounds/skype calls continue as normal during this time..
In Game - War Thunder and Elite: Dangerous - either the game will slow to single digit frames per second, which will allow me to exit the game, but the issue will continue in windows requiring a restart. Or I'll get a straight black screen which can only be fixed be rebooting. There is no obvious rhyme or reason to the timing of the crash. I can play for hours without a problem or I can get hit within a minute of starting the game.
I've also received the following error once or twice while playing elite following a black screen crash that didn't need a reboot:
Attempted fixes:
Not in the order attempted.
1) Drivers: The driver issue has occurred over several driver updates, most recently during the change to windows 10. I've used a driver clearer utility, done a clean sweep and reinstalled fresh drivers with no change.
2) Gfx card bios: checked latest bios for card, confirmed that version was installed - no action taken.
3) Heat: Have tried running with/without the side of the case on. Have opened the room windows and doors to increase cool airflow in the room. It *seemed* to help for a bit but doesn't make an obvious difference now, could have been confirmation bias anyway. Have downloaded MSI afterburner and dropped the temp at which the fan kicks to full power.
4) Diagnostics: Have installed and have been running the Techpowerup gpu-z 0.85 application. I have noticed that the ram speed for the gfx card drops to 0Mhz during the crash instances. I've (hopefully!) attached a copy of the log during one of these instances. Edit: I can't seem to see the attachment, so I've copy&pasted the file to the bottom of the page.
5) Driver conflicts: have checked in Device Manager to see if there are any conflicts. None are shown. I've been disconnecting USB devices (Joystick, Trackir etc.) to see if that stops the problem. No issues found so far.
Recent changes:
No changes I can remember that could have started the problem. However I have upgraded to Win10, added a Trackir device and a usb joystick. All were done after the problem started and removing the devices again made no change. The issue was occurring with win8.1 before the upgrade to win10 anyway.
Operating system:
Issue started on Win8.1 64bit and has continued on Win10 64 bit.
