Labor dumped Beazley for Rudd after he confused Rove McManus and Karl Rove. :tinfoil:

How can a Prime Minister be judged to have governed competently when his or her Party colleagues thought he or she should be replaced, and actually did replace him or her?

Probably because they governed competently while their party colleagues thought they should be replaced.

Can you explain this?

I'm only reading the wikipedia article on it, but Crean while he was still leader called a spill and narrowly defeated Beazley. But after leadership speculation continued Crean was asked to resign by high ranking labor colleagues, he did, then Latham V Beazley happened with Latham winning out.

Was there something else?

Did you miss when Crean spectacularly pulled the pin on his own career by coming out and publicly calling for a spill with Rudd as PM, himself as deputy? Problem was he didn't check that Rudd was actually prepared to run first, so Gillard promptly sacked Crean and won unopposed.

I'm kind of hoping Turnbull can scare Labor into shifting Shorten.

Switching from Shorten would kill any narrative the ALP could have in painting Malcolm as a bloody handed old man who sleeps in a bed of copper.

Shorten isn't going to take advantage of any possible Narrative anyway so they haven't really got much to lose.

It seems Section 19A of the Parlimentary Retiring Allowances Act 1948 agrees with you - it was updated in 2007, but the two year minimum still seems to be present.

Tony Abbott became president September 18th, 2015. He's 4 days short.

Haha he's going to call the spill for Friday.

Why on earth would you concede so much to the Nats? They do not have a single chip to bargain with. They're nothing without the Liberals.

I don't know what's more annoying - people who whinge about changing PMs without consulting the electorate, or people who whinge about people who don't realise this is perfectly legitimate without stopping to consider whether it should, in fact, be legitimate

Why shouldn't it be legitimate?

I'm not sure why so many in this thread are hoping for a change of leadership in the ALP. The leader is just a figurehead of the ALP, nothing more than a mere puppet to their right-wing faction. The policies of the ALP won't change over night just because Albanese or Plibersek is in charge (unless of course they're more right-wing/racist i.e. Julia Gillard scrapping the Mining Super-Profits Tax and bringing in the Malaysia Solution).

Just give up on the ALP already. It is a neo-liberal shadow of it's former democratic-socialist self.

Also the glorification of Paul Keating by some in this thread is disgusting. The man turned the ALP into what it is today and set Australia on the course of demonizing Asylum Seekers with his introduction of mandatory detention.

Seeing as the Greens are not going to win the next election, it's not unreasonable to want the ALP to be in government over the LNP.

Politics is all about perception. If members of the public perceive that the Greens will never win an election, they won't. It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Clinging onto the ALP because they're the only shot at beating the LNP is just giving up and letting neo-liberalism win. As long as the ALP continue to chase right-wing swing voters and only throw a few bones to environmentalist and left-wing causes they should be held with the same contempt that we hold the LNP.

The ALP are a lost cause and must be abandoned if anything resembling a left-wing party is to succeed in Australia.

I just don't buy that we need to be subjected to a thousand year LNP reich while The Greens work on increasing their vote.
