Downtown is starting to become okay with U of M Flint and Mott CC, and Kettering is doing alright just with all the industrial brown-zone surrounding it, but the amount of boarded-up houses and barbed wire everywhere really paints a dark picture.

Hey guys what's up?!

I'm postin from a power station in West Virginia, where I've been poking around a bunch all morning. I have no data out here, but rest assured there's gonna be some loving cool pictures in here once I get back tonight!

I just renewed my passion for power gen by coming here. I kept looking at screens and spreadsheets and lost the tangible part of what I'm doing. Being near all this equipment has stimulated my curiosity and I now know I need to get out to a station frequently.

Also, it's started a deluge of questions I'm asking myself. I got to a level doing research where I was running out of questions about the major systems and processes, and this morning has brought a shitload more questions to now go back and answer. It's difficult to know what you need to know without looking at the fucker.

Anyways, poo poo owns. Go renew a passion. Hope everyone's day's great!

OH poo poo I thought the work computer blocked USB data transfer but hey I was wrong, so enjoy these cool pics of a generic coal power station with no affiliation to any one company in particular:

Parallel coal mills/pulverizers:

There's 15 of them in a row.

Pretty bad steam leak out of a pump seal:

It's a smaller pump (like only the size of my torso) for an aux system so they're running anyways.

Giant 3 story condenser:

This big guy sits under the low pressure turbine and condenses the steam back into water via cooling water from the lake.

1st extraction feedwater heater:

This guy extracts steam from the turbines and uses it to heat the water before it comes into the boiler, via shell/tube heat exchangers. Think a giant circular radiator. There's 6 of these. Per boiler Three boilers here.

That valve hand wheel is about 6 ft in diameter, by the way.

Shot of the outside of one of the units:

The corrugated 12 story metal building to the right is the boiler. Everything you see outside here is emissions equipment working the boiler exhaust. It actually draws a lot of parallels to car exhaust emissions, interestingly enough.

Here's the inside shot of those ducts, as they come off the boiler and go out to the stack:

Forced draft fans:

8 of these per boiler, and they're huge. Not only that, there's another 8 on the exhaust side. Using the FD fans to push fresh air into the boiler, and using the Induced Draft (ID) fans on the exhaust, they can adjust the pressure in the boiler to very slightly below barometric.

More to come from my afternoon jaunt. The turbine room is insane. INSANE.

The Locator posted:

So awesome. Out here in the middle of the desert, we don't have handy lakes to provide cooling water for the power plants, which made me wonder - how does the power plant cooling affect the lake? Is the temperature increase significant enough to change the ecosystem, or is it a large enough heat-sink that it has a negligible effect?

Just asked one of my mentors about this after I had a semi-related question. One of the units has both the giant lakewater condenser in the previous set of photos, and two ~10,000 gallon shell & tube heat exchangers acting as condensers in parallel. I asked why they would need this, and he says the lake is too small and heats up too fast to just use the lakewater as a cooling agent. They had to tack on the exchangers and some small cooling towers, which is the way you normally do it without a large body of water.

Apparently the inlet and outlet temps on the lakewater condenser have a differential of around 15°F, and can and will heat all or part of the lake, depending on its size.

Anywho, as promised, a couple pics of the turbine room:

Here's the low pressure turbines:

The steam runs into the High pressure, then intermediate pressure, then low pressure turbines, then goes straight down into the condenser located on the lower level. At certain points, a small portion of steam will be extracted to preheat the feedwater at the feedwater heaters in the previous set of pictures. This is a weird setup where the HP and IP turbines are on one generator, and the LP turbines are on a second generator.

Here's a view of the HP and IP turbines on the left, and the LP turbines on the right:

The steam crossover is the big pipe above them. The non-piped "huts" in the foreground are the two electrical generators, connected directly via shaft.

Here's a nameplate off ONE of the generators:

Remember, there's two of them.

Per unit.

VVVV Naw, as long as no company names are on things I can use photos for educational stuff. They've let me use them for classes where they're teaching related stuff!

I think it's mainly because it's very very old tech. If you look at that nameplate, the turbines were built in 1965.
