Nonsense posted:How common are deaths like the large group found in Austria? That incident sounds like what some immigrants traversing through Mexico have dealt with via "coyotes" who steal their cash and ditch the locked cargo vehicle in the Chihuahua desert. Last year, 75% percent of all migrants (as in "people moving from one country to another", regardless if they are refugees or economic immigrants) that died on their route died in the Mediterranean Sean. Boats sinking with several hundred people drowning are depressingly common. The worst case were 700 dying in a single sinking ship. That Austrian incident was sadly a comparatively small event

Jack B Nimble posted:All of them...in the world? Bound for Europe? Do you have a source, I'd like to know more. Sorry, that was poorly worded. From the International Organization for Migration: http://www.iom.int/files/live/sites/iom/files/pbn/docs/Fatal-Journeys-Tracking-Lives-Lost-during-Migration-2014.pdf quote:In 2014, up to 3,072 migrants are believed to have died in the Mediterranean, compared with an estimate of 700 in 2013. Globally, IOM estimates that at least 4,077 migrants died in 2014, and at least 40,000 since the year 2000. quote:Although methods of counting vary, over the last 20 years Europe appears to have the highest figures for reported deaths. Since the year 2000, over 22,000 migrants have lost heir lives trying to reach Europe. Between 1996 and 2013, at least 1,790 migrants died while attempting to cross the Sahara. Since 1998, more than 6,000 migrants have dies trying to cross the United States - Mexico border, according to the United States Border Patrol. In Australia, the Border Crossing Observatory of Monash University suggests that nearly 1,500 migrants died on their journey to Australia between 2000 and 2014. So Europe is responsible for about half of global migrant deaths in the last 15 years, and about three fourths of global migrant deaths last year. It's shameful. Honj Steak posted:German CDU starting talks with coalition partners about an "immigration law" that could open up legal ways of getting to Europe as a refugee without using smugglers. It should also be noted that the refugees that are caught at the Austrian-German border are not sent back. Their traffickers are arrested and the refugees themselves are processed like all the other refugees that came to Germany in the last few weeks.

Effectronica posted:The counterpoint is that the amount of resources necessary to support refugees is far from bankrupting European countries, and this is so obvious that there's little point in explicitly stating this. That's true for Europe as a whole. But I can actually believe Greek politicians that they cannot afford to properly care for all the refugees that cross from Turkey into their country, especially if the other EU countries keep refusing to help.

I just thought about something. If Syrians call Merkel "Mama Merkel" and are super happy when they are accepted as refugees, Angie will get all the credit for it (undeserved as ever, since it's only her party that has held up more sensible immigration laws) and the refugees and their children will probably become lifelong CDU voters... So, fellow liberals, we better stop these refugees if we ever hope to unseat Merkel and her successor, Zombie-Merkel.
