I know just how you feel man. Had some personal things happen this year and poo poo like this really adds up and hits hard but sometimes you just have to stop and listen to the music and remember that nobody can take the music away from you.

That song came up randomly in a playlist yesterday and I realized for the first time that, except for a few moments during the verses, there's no bed. Usually you'll have a bass line under the song, or maybe a keyboard that fills the spaces. Nope, that drum machine's just echoing off into the ether for the whole song. So loving amazing.

I saw Prince a few years ago at the Ogden Theater (capacity 1600) I was 10 feet away from him when he started purple rain and I was in tears. He blew my sheltered suburban mind and made me realize what was possible. One of the greatest of all time and 2016 sucks.

This is insane. I was at his last concert (10pm show at the Fox Theatre). He seemed totally fine, was getting up from the piano and running around the stage and making jokes with the audience. I'm really going to miss him.

I've been kicking myself all week because I was in Atlanta for work from Thursday through Sunday, and I didn't know about the show until the morning after. All I was doing Friday night was twiddling my thumbs in my hotel. Now it's like a double punch to the gut that I missed it.

That sucks! I know people who were able to snag tickets to the shows day of because of the reschedule. He had to delay them a week because of the flu but I thought he had recovered. He played for 2 hours, which isn't long for his standards but he had no band or anything, just his piano.

I still have the ticket, the stub isn't even torn off. Going to get it framed.

It's looking a bit darker :(

quote:

Prince was treated for a drug overdose 6 days before his death ... multiple sources tell TMZ.

We broke the story ... Prince's private jet made an emergency landing in Moline, Illinois last Friday, hours after he performed in Atlanta. At the time his reps said he was battling the flu ... something we questioned because his plane was only 48 minutes from home before the unscheduled landing.

Multiple sources in Moline tell us, Prince was rushed to a hospital and doctors gave him a "save shot" ... typically administered to counteract the effects of an opiate.

Our sources further say doctors advised Prince to stay in the hospital for 24 hours. His people demanded a private room, and when they were told that wasn't possible ... Prince and co. decided to bail. The singer was released 3 hours after arriving and flew home.

We're told when Prince left he "was not doing well."

Man, it's never the ones you expect (except when Whitney Houston died). I just remember back to Phillip Seymour Hoffman, his was another death that came out of the blue like this that was drug related (not that it's confirmed that Prince died for overdose related reasons, but it looks likely at this point.)

edit: It's also really weird to imagine Prince in the Moline airport, it's such a dinky little place.

Where did you learn how to do that?
I was at the Baltimore show. It was the only time I saw him and of course he was amazing. Miguel came out to sing a song but he was so nervous...I guess it was hard to be in front of his hero. Prince jammed on bass and piano and killed it all around. Seeing him these last couple of years was probably as good as back in the 80s when he was on top of the world, even though I have no way of knowing for sure.

I think this might be my favorite tribute so far. As much as Purple Rain is the best song ever god drat created, it's the only song anyone's covering as a tribute to him. No one knows about Snows in April as a Prince song, and it's like 200% relevant to cover. Also seeing D'Angelo tear up :(

I have been noticing that Youtube users have been on the mindset of "Quick! Prince is dead! Post all your poo poo to Youtube and it won't be taken down for a bit!", which has been nice to see a good number of concert clips from way back.

Not that there's any benefit to this at all, but it has been interesting to see the plethora of stuff that people have quickly uploaded to Youtube while they can. There's a whole slew of live stuff up on there now and some killer performances that probably would've gone unseen. It just makes me sad to watch though now.

I don't think there's any official live releases, aside from a few tracks off of The Hits/B-Sides. 39 studio albums and no live album? That's completely weird.

I just listen to 'It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night' on repeat. That is a classic.

Rage played Prince videos from Saturday 11.30pm to Sunday 6am. Right in the middle was a full live set that I'd never seen before. It seemed to be from just after Purple Rain was released, as he had The Time and Apollonia 6 onstage for the encore, as well as Sheila E on drums. It was loving killer.

I don't think anyone alive comes closer to Prince than D'Angelo. Granted, he's like 1/10th as prolific, but he idolized Prince and has the songwriting and performing chops to match. And that voice is unmatched.

A few years ago, Meshell Ndgeocello did a Prince tribute concert. The recording was impossible to find as it happened in the midst of Prince's anti-internet spree. But she's another artist who was deeply influenced by Prince and IMO came close to his level. Hoping some stuff leaks.

Not official but there's a bootleg called From The Soundboard - Montreux 2013. Three nights. Three different setlists. Absolutely amazing.

Night 1 is normal Prince. Night 2 is more dance and NPG. Night 3 is 3rdEyeGirl and a sampler set that ends with the wildest version of Housequake I ever heard.

There is. One Night Alone...Live! (more jazz Prince) and another disc that includes the aftershow. Both OOP though.

And he tried to submit a couple live albums to get him out of his contract with Warner and they rejected them.

There's also this live show from 1982 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uAYQUbh8HHA and couple live dvds. Live At The Aladdin Las Vegas, Rave un2 The Year 2000, Sign 'O' The Times (blu-ray in japan), Prince & The Revolution Live (VHS), The Undertaker (laserdisc), The Sacrifice Of Victor (laserdisc) and a few others.

Anyway, here's a pretty rare video of him playing Gershwin's 'Summertime' perfectly during a soundcheck https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxVeUvo5COI. I read a quote from one of his bandmembers the other day that said he didn't really learn about music theory and how to read it until much later in his career, which is pretty insane.
