I really liked the washed-out look of this last one, gave it the feel of some serious cinema

Oh and for whoever mentioned the Oxy stash and viagra zombies, did you not watch the teaser for ep 3? Z-Weed!

Sometimes when I watch this, I like to pretend its all the same universe as TWD and now I geuss FearTWD, and get lost in How would The Murphy and Doc deal with the Governor? or Rick and his ghost-phone and hearing Citizen Z on the other end, or 10k using a crossbow instead of a sniper. Where is he going to find 10 thousand bolts??

I really hope at some point the Z-Nation people run into TWD character parodies. And it just totally wrecks their poo poo because it would be hilarious.

Sounds great - is that from Asylum(?) that is known for their blatant ripoffs of blockbusters? Please be on Netflix

This very show is produced by the Asylum. The Walking Deceased isn't though.

well Walking Dead achieved pop culture critical mass and also had the advantage of being based on a graphic novel

Also if you tell the average person things like, "Well sometimes the episodes are based on movies, so like Budget Zombie Edge of Tomorrow and Budget Zombie Fury Road" might not be the selling point to them that it is to me.

Someone should totally edit that down to avatar size. My abilities end with what is here.

It is kind of amazing how this show handles the lot better than most. Like with Vasquez, some shows would have turned his acting suspicious into a 6 episode affair. Instead it is directly shown a couple times, and then this episode the whole group knows he has been acting weird, right before they then just make the reveal.

Or how Cassandra's situation would have had a lot more 10K attraction weirdness very likely, and probably not had her stabbed to death in a relatively minor event. It is sad to see Pao go, but I think they wanted to emphasize that Murphy biting people does not save them, it just turns you into a puppet instead of a brain eater.

That was a really fun episode, I like the gun dealers but honestly did not expect them to be able to carry an episode like they did.

For kinda obscure, I liked when Sketchy talked about "I am an American" and then nodded to the cartel guy and said "Northern American". I've been in discussions with hispanic co-workers about how calling yourself "American" lays claim to a lot more than just the USA in many people's minds.

Scorpio acted as a pretty interesting character during the court session, both impressed by Sketchy's bullshitting, and smart enough to see past it. I expected him to offer them freedom in exchange for working for the Zetas.

I was surprised by Scorpio and I wonder if he's going to be a more interesting character than I first thought. He looks badass, and dresses sharp as hell so I love when he wanders up, but to have him act as a seemingly impartial judge actually surprised me. I am also fine with it just being a kind of one off thing to show the guy more, but it might actually be a character trait.

Naw, but the similarity really is there.

If you look in the backgrounds you can find, in addition to zombie film posters, other movies by the Asylum, such as Nazis at the Center of the Earth.

There were a TON of references this episode. More than usual it seems.

"This is Unix! I know this!" was from Jurassic Park with the granddaughter.

Men in Black agents were dead around future laser guns.

Dan(a) Scully the skeptic.

The general design of the alien suits is Xenomorph inspired.

As others have said the intro feels like it is a reference but I wasn't placing it.

The abduction light thing was definitely Fire in the Sky, although that general type of scene is pretty deeply ingrained in pop culture.

The thing I hope they touch on more is that Dan was sent by the military to recover advanced tech, so the remnants of military/govt may still exist out there and are sending people out on missions.

Who am I kidding, just one of the salaries for a walking dead cast member is like the entire z nation budget.

Bring back dead Walking Dead cast, I'd love to have T-Dog show up. No changes to his character, still just kind of not believing anything that's going on like in TWD.

Dumb in a good way though. Goddamnit I can't believe I care more about a cliffhanger on a Sy-Fy show of all things than something on AMC. Weird as gently caress.

I do really enjoy the way they always seem to start an episode showing that things happened in between. They've been doing it since the first season, with people having different weapons, clothes, finding water and food and ammo in between and then basically popping in on them at the start of a new adventure. Kind of makes the series seem, I don't know how to say it but lived in seems the best way to say it.

It helps that Z-Nation will absolutely kill off likable characters before people are tired of them. That and while there is a goofyness, characters are a lot smarter than in a lot of shows. I mean this episode had essentially expounded on the Mexican Death Cult Cartel who wants to rule the world. And it actually made some sense. I can't even imagine The Walking Dead and how they would have handled this.

Also, I love that because of the huge gently caress off wall USA built, Mexico is actually handling the apocalypse pretty well.

I liked how in Doc's flashback they showed a zombie wander in out of focus in the background into Doc's office. Having that kind of internal consistency surprises me after having my expectations decimated by TWD. Have they had a single teleporting zombie yet? Although, I fully expect a show based specifically around teleporting zombies sooner or later.

Also this is dumb but I only just realized it but Doc IS an actual doctor? They played that really coy the whole time, like it was a nickname.
