Latest Update: Episode 32, 33, and 34 (11/27) Don't play that game, you know what Dark Souls is. In case you don't for some reason, however: Dark Souls is a third person action RPG by From Software, published by Namco Bandai. It was released on PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2011, and after much begging by the PC community, on PC in 2012. The PC version sucked absolute nuts because From had never made a PC game before (and in fact they stated this when asked to make the PC version!), but thankfully our good man Durante took up the reins of making it actually playable, which is why this LP is possible! Players assume the role of a cursed human who has been chosen to make a pilgrimage out of the Undead Asylum to discover the fate of the undead. Along the way they meet some good friends, chop up a lot of mindless zombie jerks, and are lied to by pretty much every man, woman, and creature they come across. Because it's a fantastic game and it's great for just chilling out with a friend and shooting the breeze about whatever comes to mind. Initially it was conceptualized as a way to talk about the lore and blab on about how much Faerie Fortune and I love the game, but that dissolves into just general chat pretty quickly. Still, it is the overarching idea that guides our playthrough and we do return to the subject often! Feel free. The game is approaching a finely aged five years old now (I know, weird, right?) and Faerie Fortune and I decided that we would just talk about whatever when we started recording, so spoilers are a non-issue. I would appreciate if you'd show a bit of discretion and not like straight up spoil everything in the game in one post, but overall it's not a big deal. Most people know about this game because it is very hard, but I have a whopping 875 hours of playtime at the time of writing this OP so I'm pretty good at it. I will be behind the wheel, while my good friend and co-commentator Faerie Fortune provides some much needed company. Editing will be extremely light and often times non-existent because the goal of this LP is to provide a podcast-like experience. Since we talk about spoilers right out of the gate and explore the bounds of the story while at the same time chatting about whatever comes to mind, the gameplay itself is a bit less of a focus this time around than my usual let's plays. As I said above, it's a great game for just shooting the poo poo with a friend and that's what we did, and hopefully you'll enjoy it too. It is, yes. Initially Faerie Fortune and I posted in the stream thread about this playthrough and all of our commentary was recorded on the stream, as well as all of the gameplay footage. However, I wanted to record a local copy in 1080p along with my own vocal audio so that I could make it high quality when I uploaded it to Youtube! Then the streams went on for hours and hours and I got way more footage than I'm willing to just dump onto Youtube at once (and also it'd take like 3 straight days to render in 1080p at this point)... so we decided together that we'd make a full let's play out of it! Also, the stream was her idea, just for the record. CJacobs fucked around with this message at 01:01 on Nov 28, 2015 |

You were doing pretty well on the Asylum Demon. I've tried to kill him before and never got below 10% damage before boredom set in and I'd got sloppy (and smushed). The hammer drop if you kill him that first time is a cool Easter egg, but geez. And of course if you take the black firebombs to do it quickly and still want the Master Key that means you're rolling Thief, and that's probably not a stat line you want to be saddled with if you plan on spending most of the game crushing fools. But yeah, good start so far. Turning this into an LP is cool, between my vacation and other streams I missed all but like 1 or 2 of yours so I've been looking forward to it. Speaking of other streams, that list part of the episode might be a good avenue of discussion: how much time are you willing to spend in Slider Hell to try to sculpt a look you like? The longest I've wasted was around 45 minutes in New Vegas the first time (probably most of it sorting through beards...), and when I started up the scavenger run stream, the eponymous corpse raider took me 19 minutes (I started keeping track after the NV debacle, heh): http://lpix.org/2204432/laura.gif Linked because this is so early on page 1. Gotta love reflected light on those eye textures....

As a min maxing sperg I'm wondering why you picked the thief? The class wastes so many points in int and faith that the only reason to ever pick him is for some weird faith/int spell caster. You can also get all his gear 5 minutes into the game if you sequence break into lower burg.

The thief also starts with the master key, allowing you to use your gift selection for something more useful, like the pendant.

"The Taurus Demon is a stopping point because you have to fight him before you have access to Andre, so you don't have upgraded weapons." Poor Rickert. Nobody seems to know that he exists. I had to do a lot of weapon repairing before I made it to Undead Burg, and the Soul Arrow he sells was one of my main ways to fight anything until I found weapons capable of killing an enemy. Granted, Titanite drops are pretty uncommon early on, but you can get your favorite early-game weapon up to +2 easily enough before having to deal with the Taurus Demon, or if you're terrible like I am, you can kill the crystal lizard for Twinkling Titanite and get Astora's Straight Sword to +1 or +2.

So our Dark Souls protag this time around is named after an asthmatic magician from a bullet hell game with amazing music. Seems legit! I look forward to the final death count. Also, the backstabbing. So much backstabbing.

Solaire: Is the NPC available in front of the last fight, which is certainly more poetic if it's between father and son. Uses lightning spears, which are explicitly called out as the God of War's weapon of choice. Spends a bunch of time sitting around the demolished statue of the God of War. Refers to the sun as a father, and dreams of matching its stature. One of the items says the God of War still watches over his subjects, which certainly seems to be what Solaire's doing. If you want to interpret things differently, that's your business, and the vagueness surrounding it is there to allow you to do just that. But I buy it because he's actually just straight up named "SUN MAN"

Solaire being the War God isn't canon but it fits perfectly with everything we know about him, and whilst it is official that he isn't that doesn't mean you can't decide he is in your own head. It's not like the creator of the game is going to come into your house and beat you to death for interpreting his game differently, it just means that you should make sure people know what you're saying isn't fact but rather your version of the game. For example who Priscilla's parents are is also fairly debated but I think it's Seath and Velka which has enough support in items and circumstances but has never been officially stated.

I will admit I get a little mad about "Solaire is the firstborn" theories in this stream, partially because it became kind of a running joke and partly because Solaire, as a character means a lot to me and I will defend his mundanity to the death. Also I get excited when I'm streaming and tend to exaggerate my emotions a lot! But I still don't think there's any real evidence anywhere that its true and in fact I think if it was true it would take away from Solaire's character in the game. In the description for his armour and weapons it explicitly states that neither Solaire himself or his equipment is in any way magical. His magic comes from his pure, unwavering faith in what he does and what he believes in and Dark Souls needs a character like that who 100% truly believes in something! Solaire is awesome (to me at least) precisely because there's nothing magical about him at all. He just believes in something with all of his heart and he allows that belief and faith to be his strength and I think that would lose all meaning if it was revealed that "lol actually he's the god of war and totally magical"

The priscilla theory makes some sense at least since theres really no better explanation beyond she's a Seath experiment or some other dragon did it. Solaire theory requires you to ignore the most obvious answers.

I've always liked the idea that Solaire specifically rejected the power he was born with/into and either gave it up, never took it in the first place, or was stripped of it when he was exiled, and strove to become as awesome as he could otherwise have been through his own strength. Then you can believe both the evidence pointing to his being the firstborn AND everything that says he had no inherent magic. To me, it's the most badass of all characterizations. "I don't want to BE the greatest warrior ever. I want to BECOME the greatest warrior ever!"

Solaire theory requires you to ignore the most obvious answers. The main Priscilla theory I hear is Seath/Gwynevere which also has some support and definitely explains why Seath likes to experiment on her maidens so much since she dumped him and left Anor Londo to marry the god of fire. Velka absolutely fascinates me though since we don't know much about her and I haven't heard the theory that she might be Priscilla's mother before, I'd love to hear more about that!

"I don't want to BE the greatest warrior ever. I want to BECOME the greatest warrior ever!" I agree with this interpretation personally. It is specifically stated the firstborn of gwyn was stripped of his deific status, essentially leaving him a mundane human being. He may not even remember his origin other than his innate drive to find his own sun and be 'so grossly incandescent.' I don't necessarily agree that he gave up his divinity by choice as we're told he was stripped of it after a mistake that resulted in the loss of what I assume to be a divine artifact (the annals), but it is a cool characterization for him and his motives. I've always seen him as kinda goofy, except in battle where he's a stern badass. This goofiness allows me to believe that even as a deity he was capable of bumbling something important.
