Many of Heinlein's early books were juveniles meant for young boys. Like me. At 13 years old, I ate up that stuff.

Like me. I've actually been reading a lot of his early stuff recently. A lot of it is really juvenile propaganda for space colonization that is pretty much reskinned Western/Pioneering pulp like Farmer in the Sky, Red Planet, and most of The Green Hills of Earth, but then you run into more sophisticated stuff like Citizen of the Galaxy.

A lot of good opinions in this thread. Book was fetishistic in its reverence, and it was a good thing Verhoeven did to satirize it. Stranger in a Strange Land was also good, even with the self-insert.

That Robot posted:wow dude The Nazis where too radical to survive. The Thousand-Year Reich lasted just eleven years. Even if they had won, I doubt it would have lasted another 50. They would have had to culturally evolve to become more moderate,or otherwise you'd wind up with a world populated exclusively by blond-haired blue-eyed Aryans; which would be the genetic equivalent of a race of inbred toy poodles. And then just the right strain of flu comes along and BOP, EVERYTHING DIES. The whole racial purity thing contains the seeds of its own destruction. Hitler was a crazed idiot junk-bunny.

I mean those things are cool, but I can't imagine liking space war so much that I'd be willing to slog through the creepy politics of hack sci fi writers to get at it.

That Robot posted:heinlein rules and is better than orson scat card Card is absolute poo poo. If you made a book out of used toilet paper you would have something better than Card (maybe you could learn something worthwhile about the pooper's diet from the poop texture and that'd be worth more than anything Card made). Ender's Game is the only thing he made even worth talking about, and it is basically "they all bullied me but then I beat them up and I killed them and everyone clapped", the book. Anyone who felt a connection with that weirdo is pretty hosed up, and anyone who didn't grow out of that "phase" is, wow. Heinlein is just regular bad. Really generic military-fetish bad.

etalian posted:This is basically america right now: I like the way this provides a stark contrast to Verhoven's work. You have the satire of the first movie then there's this thing, the "date movie 3" level of satire where you just do a thing that happened in another movie and hey that's satire right! It's a shame the movie wasn't more like the book, needed a 45 minute scene where a guy has a lot of dumb flashbacks while climbing a cliff side (which is also a flashback as well)
