Latest update: FINALE: Chekhov's Ramp

Wheelman is a sandbox GTA-ish 2009 game featuring Vin Diesel and made by Tigon Studios, a company founded by Vin Diesel, which focuses on making games featuring primarily Vin Diesel. You play as Vin Diesel who pretends to be Milo from Miami and you blow up cars by using your car as a melee weapon. Everything explodes. It's pretty cool.

I'm joined by Geisha Deconstruct, the same person who helped me cover El Shaddai previously.

Does this game feature Vin Diesel?

Yes.

What can I expect from this LP?

  • Post-commentary
  • Lots of explosions
  • All main missions
  • At least one of each type of side mission
  • Vin Diesel
  • Mini Vin Diesel

The first six episodes are recorded, but I'll be waiting for thread feedback before I record more, in case people want to see more or less of certain parts of the game. We're past the six episode mark, so it's going at the pace it's at right now.

Is this game actually good?

I am still not sure! The driving is hilarious in good ways, but the shooting is horrible in bad ways. From what I've heard, the later game devolves into too much shooting.

:siren::siren:SPOILER POLICY:siren::siren:

This game's story isn't particularly good, but don't spoil anything that hasn't been seen in the actual videos (including new gameplay abilities).

I was once excited for this game. I don't remember exactly why. I think I probably recently played Escape From Butcher Bay for the first time and thought "Clearly Vin Diesel is the factor that will also make this a good game."

I'll give it this though - the driving isn't exactly the most well refined but it did make it pretty over the top fun for the most part, even as it takes great pains to not kill anybody by having police officers and civilians alike pop out of exploding wrecks completely unharmed. And the first game I played that had the "ram" function separate from just regular driving so there isn't ever any awkward moments of trying to damage a car by rubbing against its side.

And I guess Barcelona is kind of pretty (for 2009), even if they made it completely pointless by giving you fast travel to the start of every mission.

The city design feels more like it's a playground for missions, rather than an actual place like Saint's Row or Grand Theft Auto. At least at the start when all areas are locked off.

Oh my god I had totally forgotten how amazing-dumb the dialogue actually is in this. That actually seems to come with every Vin Diesel production post Pitch Black, whether its meaningless philosophizing in anything Riddick, wanking off about family in Fast & Furious, or just incredibly hilarious comebacks to everything.

I think I like this game again.

I'm hoping for some horrible pulp philosophy in Wheelman about how life is like driving a car really fast.

Oh my Gods. This game.
Wow, this game is stupid.

I don't understand why they bothered with the AirJack. Why not just have time freeze, turn Vin Diesel into a 20ft-tall flame being, then have him saunter up to the car he's chasing, burn the driver to a crisp, take over, wise-crack, then set time going again? It's obviously what they really wanted.

Obviously.

I spent a few months in Barca. Good place. Looks like the game city was done by working from a simplified map, and two or three photos of "Barcelona in general".

I'm assuming that's reserved for the upcoming game based on Vin Diesel's D&D character, Melkor.

The sudden flips you do sometimes are so ridiculous and awesome. There's nothing quite as entertaining as a physics engine that gets confused at the physics part.

Voluntarily getting into the back of a police car does seem like a logical way to get arrested.

Actually, it was the side passenger seat and I thought (naively) he would just kick the policeman out. Then again, I'm not sure if that would work in GTA either.

This is only what I've been told. There are more shooting sections as the game goes on and I've had a few outstay their welcome. The next episode introduces it, so you'll see how uninspired it is compared to the actual fun driving mechanics.

This LP is wonderful so far. The game is completely nuts. Mini-Vin is hilarious.

It's impossible not to love this. Hopefully the shooting mechanics won't show up TOO often.

Aimed Shot and Cyclone are exactly the kind of ridiculousness more games need to do.

And while I'm not going to sing the praises of the shooting because as I recall it never becomes more interesting than exactly what we just saw I am a kind of weird fan of that kind of lock-on shooting. I don't know, it kind of made things more tolerable.

Wow, I remember playing the demo for this ages ago.

My favorite part by far is the police getting up and walking away after being hurled into a wall at 60 mph. Vin Diesel doesn't kill.

It seems that Felipe and Miguel are essentially the same character. Small-time hoods who have family ties to big-time hoods which give them delusions of grandeur.

Milo is going to have his hands full babysitting these two until he can get close to their more important and more competent relatives.

Wait. So "the broker's" plan was to ambush Vin Diesel with a bunch of "his men" who would then proceed to shoot the car he was sitting in without attempting to get out of the line of fire or anything? Wait, that doesn't make sense anyway, unless he already knew where Vin Diesel was going to take him and ... never mind. Clearly I'm thinking too much about this game's plot.

Although the guy's men shooting up the car as he's sitting in it chilling was kind of hilarious.
