Unwashed...

Outside rain continues to fall and of course there are no umbrellas or really any type of overhead cover between the trio and their destination. By they time they reach the remains of the bookstore all three are thoroughly soaked.

John Carter's, once a bastion of the alt-fic genre, was originally demolished when a Red Champion fell through it during one of the early fights for Earth's fate. All but a few of the books and most of the antique wood furniture was looted in the early days of the occupation by the Coalition for kindling and firewood, respectively. The electricity in this area has been off since then, and Red patrols have furthered the damage done to the old building by using it for target practice at least once as plasma burns and bullet holes mark the crumbling, roofless, facade.

Assuming that Fuel's memory is in working order there should be a switch and a hidden hatch on the ground floor buried underneath a pile of decomposing plastic memory storage devices. Cheap, easy to use, constantly backed up to the internet and biodegradable, these slender tablet shaped electronics were ubiquitous in the year or so from before the invasion. All of these combined to make them some of the first technology abandoned by the survivors, the wireless signals they used were easy for the Coalition to track, and the alien tech 'caste' the Purples were able to infiltrate the network and create false promises of safety to make it easier to round up humanity.

Unfortunately the mass of decaying long chain hydrocarbons had congealed into a large heavy lump that was completely blocking where the hatch should be and it's definitely too heavy for the three of them to lift.

... And Somewhat Slightly Dazed

The Champion hisses in contempt at Shift as the teleporter leaves only a light scratch on the alien. The contempt quickly turned into pain and even fear as Le Geai takes careful aim and pulls the trigger. The rifle's crack echoed through the forest air and the bullet slammed directly into the Champion's left eye.

Blood sprays onto the ground, mixing with the falling rain as the alien screams in agony, all thoughts of violence overridden by an instinctual flight response. Individual Reds would commonly flee battle if they felt for even a moment they were outmatched, it was only in numbers that this instinct was tempered by reason in their kind, which would have been something that humanity could have used in their fight back, if the Reds weren't painfully aware of how vulnerable they were as individuals and only moved in groups. The Champion made a powerful leap into the air, almost but not quite flying as it retreated towards the safety of numbers within Camp Aleph Green.

"Everyone okay?" He says after popping into existence in front of them. Giving them all a hard look, Shift considers them. They obviously had the spark, but were they fighters? "Good fight. Spiders! Thank you!" He calls up to the trees as they move into the trees to vanish. "They are going to come back with patrols and air cover. We need to get out of here. Now." Looking at a compass and a hand drawn sand map of the area that he needed to know, he starts moving quickly toward the safehouse.

"Follow me, be quick. Be quiet." Shift says, introductions didn't save lives, and they didn't have time. One champion was hard to kill, a squad was impossible.

Wet clothes were bad, especially somewhere as cold as New Detroit. In a slum with many and varied ways of getting sick, this was one of the surest ways to do so. But it was all worth it, because once they got into the secret MERLIN bolt hole they could dry off, warm up, there would be tools for taking the drat collars off and everything would be okay.

Evie expected the building, like so many others around it, to be demolished by now. Several times over. So long as it didn't collapse on top of the three of them it wouldn't be too bad. But when they get to John Carter's, and Evie hurries over to where the hatch should be, she again deflates. With a sunken sigh, she just taps another menthol out of the packet and slips it between her lips. Even though it was probably far too wet to actually light anymore.

"The best laid schemes o' mice an' men gang aft agley. An' lea'e us nought but grief an' pain, for promis'd joy." She grumbles, her eyes not having left the congealed mass of alien attracting consumerism blocking the way downwards. "Okay," She turns her head to both Blondie and Brother. "Where we need to go is under this building. There should be a hatch right here." She points to the floor. "Except it's covered by five years worth of environmentally friendly capitalism." Evie kicks the lump just in case they were wondering what the hell she was on about.

"I'm willing to take suggestions without notice."

Julian popped back into the visual spectrum. The teleporter’s insistence of leaving was a little disappointing. What with a wounded Champion on the run and all. What with room on his rifle for another notch.

“Aight,” he said. “That’s...”

And then Frantic was off. Julian grinned and raised his rifle back to his eye.

“...mighty fine. Aight! Fight’s still on! Les go!”

Maybe the rookie wasn’t so bad after all. Jules stuck out his tongue, half grinning he tracked the Champion through the sky.

Race for the Prize

Frantic chases after the alien firing wildly as she goes in hopes of hitting the monster. Rapidly reloading each time the clip went dry, her shots had no effect other than alerting everyone within earshot and leaving a trail of bullet ridden trees behind her. The Champion doesn't even touch the ground each time its body starts to dip, instead it lands on a tree limb and expertly leaps back into the air leaving Frantic below.

Le Geai takes a more conservative approach, and he lines up an expert shot at the fleeing alien's back. The bullet strikes it square between the shoulder blades at the base of the neck. Unfortunately, what would be a killing or disabling shot on a terrestrial being merely sent the alien sprawling in mid leap, dazed and unable to correct its trajectory as it crashes through the trees.

As Frantic makes it to the impact point, the alien begins its unsettling hissing laugh once again. Fire bursts from nearby trees, Frantic has dashed right into an ambush! A second patrol of Reds, this one thankfully without another Champion, had rapidly set up an ambush by forming a loose semicircle around where the Champion had crashed to earth. Searing plasma bolts flew through the air, striking her from two sides and leaving her wounded. The Champion slowly gets to its feet and gestures for the other Reds to move in for the kill.

Frantic is staggered (-1 Penalty to Speed and can only take one Standard Action a turn) and has -2 penalty to further Toughness checks until she recovers.

A Spoonful Weighs A Ton

Ernie looks around the bookstore and spots a few lengths of steel rebar torn loose from some earlier damage. He hefts them with great difficulty as they still have some concrete attached, and manages to wedge them under the goop blocking their way. Together, the D'Aubeny's manage to rig up a primitive fulcrum using another piece of concrete, and soon enough the obstruction is cleared.

Lilly recovers astonishingly fast under Fuel's care and soon enough feels as good as new. After finishing her super powered treatment, Fuel locates the switch and activates it, causing the hatch to slowly slide open.

An unfamiliar mechanical voice sounds from the lighted stairwell within. "Warning, system is on battery power. Estimated time to containment failure, ten minutes unless auxiliary power system activated."

"Keep the light on, Blondie." Is quickly added as they descend deeper into the MERLIN facility. "A containment failure is usually either a prisoner of some sort or an experimental device of the mass destruction variety. Can't know for sure until I see it."

At this point, Fuel turns around to look at the two behind her. "This is a MERLIN outpost. Long since decommissioned as far as I can recall. But assuming I can bring it out of mothball and whatever is about to break containment doesn't kill us, I should be able to break our collars off in here." Despite the mysterious doom object below, she can't help but smile a little. And then Evie sighs. "Yes. Thank you, Ernie. I'll look for the auxiliary power system." You kinda need to be able to understand bird to get the full sentiment because the word itself doesn’t translate that great back into English. The important gist, though, is that birds really hate the Coalition. Something about their nature, the alienness of it, is off putting to most wildlife. Birds in particular.

Except for, like, buzzards and vultures. But you’d be pretty hard pressed to find a group more chill than carrion birds. Julian liked them a lot. Good group. Very friendly. Easy to talk to.

Then there was the roar of plasma bolts. Julian re-shouldered his rifle and disappeared once more to hunt himself a trophy.

Location: Underground Base

Fuel entered the base proper, it looked fairly standard for a MERLIN base, emergency supplies by the doorway, a communications terminal that probably doesn't work, a man sized opaque tube of energy set partially into the floor with surrounding generation equipment, master computer with ominous countdown display prominent on a big screen, recessed panels that should hold various pieces of equipment she could use, the usual.

There are also controls for what look like a geothermal tap in the farthest corner of the room, or at least, they would be controls if somebody hadn't smashed them to pieces with a wrench some time in the past...

Location: Alien Ambush Clearing

Shift teleports into position behind the unsuspecting aliens. Of course, as soon he opens fire they'll know where he is, and he can't count on the Spiders for backup since they fled at top speed once they realized their armaments wouldn't do more than piss off the Champion.

He and Le Geai take careful aim, and fire. The Red who is Shift's target goes down in a spray of blood, not dead, but wounded enough that it's out of the fight. Le Geai isn't so lucky, perhaps warned by the sound of Shift's pistol, the Champion jerks its head slightly to the right and the bullet which would have hit it in the face instead whistles harmlessly past and into the trees.

He didn't care about killing targets and didn't care about even wounding the Reds. All that mattered was taking their attention away from the other people so they could flee.

Teleporting in a well practiced move, he appears in another location and starts opening fire, this time deeper in the woods away from the others. Trying to draw them out or think there were more than just a man and a pistol after them.

"If I were to take a guess… somebody wanted to have the power eventually fail and broke the back-up so whatever is in containment would be released after a few years. Which only raises more questions than answers and doesn't keep us from dying in less than ten minutes." Evie thinks out loud as she walks around the outpost. "So!"

Evie looks to the broken generator controls. "Good news is, this is a geothermal tap. Geothermal power generation, as we all know, works from pouring water down a hot hole to spin a wheel. Thankfully we still have the turbine generator and we even more thankfully have a heat source." Fuel puts a bit of panache in pointing at their fire-powered friend. "Blondie. My deepest apologies, but to ensure you are not incinerated within the next few minutes you will have to power this turbine to get the auxiliary power back online."

Beauty and the Beast

Fuel examines what she can of the geothermal power generator. Without the controls the system is unable to cycle in the water it requires to run the turbines, but she realizes there's a secondary thermocouple system to harvest 'waste heat' that Lilly would be able to charge with her power. Hopefully that will provide enough power once the fire controller gets to work. Even if she managed to repair the sophisticated automation that controls the water flow into the thermal bore, Fuel is unsure if the actual infrastructure of plumbing still works, considering the widespread damage to the outside city.

Temporary half measures are better than no measures though, so she sets Lilly to work and then joins her brother in examining the supplies. Together they find the appropriate metal working tools to cut the collars, and after a brief examination of the collars themselves, they don't seem to be tamper resistant to cutting, if done properly.

Ernie finds enough preserved food and water to keep about 20 people going for an entire month, or a smaller group for much longer. In addition he finds an extremely well stocked first aid kit, and what appears to be a portable surgery kit.

There doesn't appear to be any damage to the communications console, but since the radio waves are owned by the Coalition it would be of little to no use even if they had anyone to talk to.

The computer, however, is much trickier. For one thing, it's using an extremely archaic and hard to understand operating system. When the timer vanishes after Lilly starts to funnel heat into the system, Fuel finds herself face to face with something she has only heard of in legends, spoken of in whispers in the halls of MERLIN's elite IT experts.

Evie had long since mastered the skill of talking down science to normal people. It was second nature by now. "Just keep the heat on the generator, and we'll get a trickle charge. Should be enough to get this place going again." She really dumbs down to Blondie. And lo and behold, the alarms silence and auxiliary power is restored. "Okay, great. We have power. Just keep it up Blondie!"

Multitasking because otherwise she would otherwise have to rely on Crazy Fire Girl and Ernie to do do things all on their own, Evie goes over the supplies with her brother. "Good, this place still has tools. Should be able to cut off all our collars with these." She can't help but smile in rare fit of pure optimism. "So that's part one of our escape plan covered. Ernie, pack up anything else we can use. I don't think we'll be coming back here once we've got the collars off."

And on to another task, the computer. "Hmm." Fuel wasn't a technologist, but had enough training through MERLIN to have some idea of what she was dealing with in the outpost. "Communications still work. Not that we can send out anything without giving away our position. Or that there is anybody else to send messages to…" She just sort of trails off, instead just staring in awe at what appeared in front of her now that power was running through this place again.

"Is this…" Evie is taken aback, looking back at her brother and the computer screen several times. She just couldn't believe it. "This is UNIX... I don't know this." Not being a crack MERLIN computer wizard, Fuel very cautiously stretches her hands over the keyboard. "This is some really foundation level MERLIN stuff. ------- has demonstrated extreme personalty changes since their last encounter with agent Stardust.
At first, it was believed that Stardust had killed them, but apparently they were more resilient than believed
and possessed the ability to completely reincarnate. After several years passed, -------

Due to the field's experimental nature and requirements for a continuous energy supply
unable to be currently safely met outside of an installation, ------- has been placed in the Detroit

their power and still unknown abilities places them as an existential threat of Category 1.

Frantic opens fire, spraying bullets everywhere in front of her. This catches most of the Reds by surprise, taking out six of the remaining nine in a single volley. This also happens to hit Shift, who is grazed by a bullet that also knocks bark off the tree he's using for cover. Sadly, a single volley is all she gets, as the survivors open fire with their plasma guns once again, and the scorching smell of overcooked human flesh fills the air as the fire burns most of her body.

Weakened, but not yet out, Frantic struggles to raise her gun as the Champion, blood still leaking from his destroyed eye, walks up to her. "Pathetic." It manages to grumble before slamming a massive fist directly into her burned abdomen. There is a brief moment of pain, and then silence and darkness for Frantic. The surviving Red soldiers open their toothsome maws in predator grins, clearly meat, albeit overdone, is on the menu tonight.

The Champion turns to where Shift is hiding, and his mouth opens in a dark smile of its own. It touches a device on its belt and human speech spits out. "Run away little man, before we eat you too."

He was going to be bringing more and every instinct in Shifts mind told him that it was stupid and every thought his head he knew that it wouldn't help anything, but it was time. This time he wouldn't let the bastard go without paying the price the taunt was going to be answered, and Shift couldn't let him kill more people.

Frantic might be already dead, right now, Shift at least couldn't see, but at least she would be avenged as he teleported to left side of the Champion and with a shout aimed the knife toward the monster's eye, ready to teleport the instant it sank into it to go back to safety. After that Shift was going to have to be on the run for a while, they would send everyone they had at him, but at that moment, he just didn't care.

Teleporting using turnabout to the left side of the champion, and attacking the alien's eye with my knife, close combat 8

Lipstick Apathy
Ernie

Ernie knew some of the names his sister was naming. Haskill, that was one of the Janes, or all of the Janes? Whatever. It didn't matter to him. And Stardust was another compatriot of his grandparents. But, he knew from other history that history was written by the people who won. So if Stardust "killed" whoever was in this basement with them, Stardust would be the one who authored the official record. Doesn't meant it's not true, but it does mean Ernie's looking for a grain of salt. "If this, ah, isn't an, uh, extinction level threat..." he begins as he walks up behind his sister and reads the log file over her shoulder.

"Sis," He begins, "Let's go through this together." Ernie says, and then he begins cherrypicking bits from the report '"'we'll have, ah, bigger problems than blank,' We're there. 'It is recommended that this stasis field never be deactivated unless humanity faces an extinction level threat.' Yeah, aliens invaded, threw us in camps, ah, tick that box. 'While, ah, blank, should be cooperative--,'" He steps back and looks at both Evie and Lilly, for the first time including Zippo in their sibling conversation, "If whoever in this basement isn't going to want to kick some Alien rear end then we're back where we were. Starving to death, and gonna have to fight. Might as well take the chance that whoever Stardust threw down here is a jacked beast and at least, uhm, sort of on our side. ."

"There is the off-chance that whoever it is holds a big grudge against MERLIN and will try to kill me over it." Evie adds. "But if anything is going to convince anybody that working together is a good idea, it's an outside invader. And they do sound like a jacked beast." The D'Aubigny votes counted, she turns to their walking, talking generator. "What do you think, Blondie?"

"So just don't identify yourself as MERLIN. Whoever this is doesn't need to know we're D'Aubigny's till, uh, at least a week from now. Especially if they have a tiger's face for a head."

"And, if they're... rowdy... it might be a situation where my whole thing might be, uh, you know, useful. I can... subdue 'em while you convince 'em."

"But once we let them out is the place still going to explode in 5 minutes? That would be, uh, a hitch, in my plan... of letting them out and then figuring out the rest after."

"That warning was just for power to containment failing. Now that we have an idea what is in there, the power failing won't do anything explosive." She confirms. "In fact, finding some way to scuttle this outpost after we're done wouldn't go wrong."

Is it I that is insane... or the rest of the world?
Lilly

Haskill? Stardust? Who are all of these people? Never heard of them. Oh well.

"Well, I don't particularly see a problem with it. We kind of... do have a little alien problem and all. But how about we finish getting these collars off first, just in case?
