Ice. Media calls it an 'epidemic'. Ice is a unifying problem for diverse communities. From the marginalised communities to the suburban white folks. Some argue that this is more of a health issue now than a legal issue. Some say that criminalising addicts will give them no hope of a future, except more crime. "Prohibition is futile." Certain nations like Portugal and Switzerland have essentially decriminalised ice, and are focusing on treating addicts and spreading awareness as a prevention measure. Some argue that other western nations should adopt this method. There is comparison drawn between this theory and the needle exchange program implemented since the 1980's to counter the spread of AIDS among heroine addicts. Your thoughts?

If your municipality keeps enough salt on hand and has the trucks, ice isn't really a huge deal. It saddens me that the lack of knowledge about ice has caused huge issues in cities like Atlanta.

How effective is salt at dealing with the feminist heroine addicts though?

Considering America's salt addiction it's just replacing one habit for another. I call it a ploy for Big Salt.

Is posting-while-tweaking bannable here, or is that just in TCC?

Reducing meth use would be a lot easier if adderall wasn't as common as candy in high schools and colleges. It's hard to get a good public health campaign explaining that this substance can ruin your life when people are doing a drug that's tremendously similar as a study aid.

Well I don't know about that, even one methyl group can make a big difference. Most people don't have a problem understanding that ethanol is okay to drink, but methanol or isopropanol are not.

None of my adderall-abusing schoolfriends would touch meth with a 10-foot pole.

Yea it's a common misunderstanding but drugs don't work like that poster thinks they do. Even things that have the same exact formula can have incredibly different effects, just by mirroring it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chirality_(chemistry)

Having done both, I can attest that their psychoactive effects are profoundly similar (adderall just being a slightly lighter version). I've been clean for a few years now, but when I was using pretty much everyone I knew who used started with adderall. It's similar to the relation between oxycontin and heroin. They are different substances but their effects are similar enough to trigger the same kind of addiction in people who are predisposed to it.

You think they won't touch it. Some of them might be using it now. Those who make the leap from adderall to meth are pretty good about hiding it because of the social stigma. More than once when I was using (and even after for a while after I got clean) I was approached by people whose adderall prescription had run out and who wanted a hookup. (They were always "trying to make it through a big project" or something. Seems a lot of big projects seem to come due around the time people who use a lot of adderall run out...)

Ice is not going away anytime soon, op. The necessary precursor can be found in every kitchen in the country and I know several people who managed to make it by themselves, for recreational purposes, without much trouble. It's really easy.

Decriminalization of ice or bust.

In some places you can buy machines to make ice for you. They sell in department stores and are completely legal as far as I know.

Salt is terrible, a single winter will rust out the bottom of your car. I live in New York and we purposely buy cars from out of the state because they have no rust, and keep them off the roads in the winter to keep them rust free. People drive poo poo rear end clunkers in the winter if they can afford it.

My town has a rampantly increasing homeless population. Many of them are mentally ill and addicted to meth or heroine. Home break-ins, car thefts and murders have been higher this year than any other year in history. The people are sharpening their pitchforks because it's basically the last resort. We've spent millions on homeless shelters, public housing, addiction recovery programs, but they're just not being used. Police-escorted social workers go to the homeless camps twice a week, but the services are still not being used. No one feels safe anymore.
