Now any kind of decient RPG release is super rare. The reason for this I blame on the quality of graphics that the newer consoles demand from their playerbase. Remake any of the JRPGs now and it's budget would go though the roof. Most of those games had 80+ hours of playtime in them alone with constant scenery changes and dialogue/action cutscenes. Now even with a giant company backing a game you can only expect at 10-30 hour game at best save very very few special cases. Hell we experienced the power creep of graphical progression firsthand recently with the new Metal Gear that surpassed its previous game in budget by tens of millions of dollars and produced a vastly unfinished game. loving art assets we expect now are insanely expensive in both time and money to produce that it has killed a great degree of storytelling in big named companies and now can only be found within the indie market with callbacks to SNES era graphic styles. The only reason we got an announcement for a Final Fantasy 7 remake is because its literally a money printing machine but I highly doubt it will surpass the original in terms of freedom of movement. The story has already been done as well so playing such an rpg is going to be hella weird when compared to first playthoughs of any rpg like its kind. I know a good number of you ate that poo poo up with titles like Xenosaga, Wild Arms, Dark Cloud, Final Fantasy 7-10, SMT Nocturne, Persona, .Hack, Suikoden and Shadow Hearts. Those games had some serious mileage but making those games today with our current demands for graphical quality would only be attempted if it was a sure thing (Like Persona and Final Fantasy) so all the shots in the dark that these once were is dead. Shame. Good JRPGs are dead.

The last one I saw is Dark Souls. But they are beating that horse so loving hard right now. Also I was more looking at the turn based/ active based battle system games that feature parties and long rear end storylines. Dark Souls is a Roguelike RPG that is really good poo poo but not in the same ballpark as what I was mentioning before.

But I have recently done some revisits to the games of my childhood with emulators and discovered that not all of my childhood games were poo poo given todays standards of what passes for a video game. Hell I want to shower a lot of them with praise for such incredible polish due to the lack of non-volatile memory access and internet connections. Patching not being an option forced a great many companies to polish the poo poo out of their products and not take a poo poo on our chests to fix later like our games today.

Bringing this thread back to life. Is there anything I should be playing/watching. This month has all been Grim Dawn and One Punch Man. I know there is a update to 7 Days to Die coming soon so I might dive into that. Speaking of diving there is Helldivers i suppose but on higher difficulties you really need a guy that can toss a reenforcement beacon before he even has the radio out of his pocket like SovietBoat does. I think Ghost in the Shell Online announced they were finally doing their open beta and I enjoyed the closed so Ill have a ok shooter on my hands. Literally just counting the days till Xcom 2 and Persona 5 at this point. God Help me.

I am not totally sure but I think the Koreans don't have the kind of marketing problem that we do in the USA. Compare the Ghost in the Shell online Trailer from a year ago when it was announced in Korea: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYucNjpnXHg To the current trailer announcing in USA: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eEmwrahtVs Its super sweet and all they managed to get the English voice actors back for Ghost in the Shell but I can't quite tell but something seems ... Different. Its almost like the first video makes me interested and the second makes me not want to even be associated with it. Wonder what caused that.
