I finished Horus. It was okay. I think I read somewhere that it was chopped down to 80 minutes, which would explain a lot of the plot holes. It was pretty underwhelming.

I love it when they abruptly stop the soundtrack, like when the dad says "They did it!" or the crows. It's a really harsh and cool way to interrupt the scene.

I think Osamu Tezuka's style makes a lot of the violence more hosed up, although that's probably rooted in my expectations of what a 60s anime "is".
