Why didn't they have a topographic map? Why didn't they just run away? Why did they think it was a good idea to murder their prisoners but it would be too cruel to tie them up? Why did they keep falling off cliffs? Why were they surprised and offended that people in the country they invaded were shooting at them?

Probably the biggest screwup was that Chinook that got shot down. Losing even one SEAL is a pretty big deal, and that thing was full of them. Really dumb not to escort the Chinooks with some Apaches or Cobras.

the true part is: four SEALs go into the wilderness to assassinate a taliban commander, get discovered by shepherds (old men, not boys, which is partly why they didn't tie them up because as soon as the sun goes down it drops well below freezing and they def would have died), get ambushed by a much larger force than they thought was present, are unable to tell their command that because of radio interference, and this resulted in a helicopter with the rest of their platoon getting shot down and marcus luttrell being the only guy from the entire platoon to survive the ordeal, after a a nearby villager finds him and brings him back to his village where he was eventually rescued by the army

everything else, including the firefight at the village, is embellishment

maybe? maybe at some kind of SEAL or military event after they both became famous? but not in the normal course of events because they were on separate teams stationed on opposite sides of the country.

There are clips from the taliban point of view of this firefight, it was incredibly one sided.

it's impossible to know for sure but intelligence reports indicate it was at least fifty. the citation for the awards given to the sailors killed in the operation claim that it was over 150. what they base that on, I have no idea.

I met the dude who "wrote" the book that the movie as based on (and I guess who really was the "lone survivor") at a corporate event 4 years ago. He was an rear end in a top hat and did nothing but talk about how he hated brown people (at a hotel conference where 50% of the people were indian) and generally acted like he was too good to be there (but not to good to take the company's money).

Everyone got an autographed copy of the book, but I'm sure the company paid for all of those as well. He basically just scribbled on the inside cover.

In the film it's pretty clear that their options were "Die" or "jump of this cliff and maybe die".

Also the dude Taylor Kitsch played really did walk out into the open to get a cell signal and got the Medal of Honor for it, which is something, even if the rest of the movie was jingoistic exaggerations

Ah, like Bravo Two Zero? IIRC that book exaggerated the amount of enemy combatants killed by the noble SAS by something like 2000%.

I'm amazed by the extent to which these special forces guys - who really do get to do all this CoD poo poo and shoot people - turn out to be huge liars. Like you need to lie about the number of people you killed because the actual number somehow wasn't "impressive" enough? I guess the same mental illness that makes you want to be a commando also makes you need to inflate the numbers to impress your dad or whoever.
