They don't. Those two celebs might be dumb but theyre honest, meanwhile the Bill Nye character is exhibiting a trait common to fundamentalists, the belief that something abstract that only a minority of the initiated fully understands, is vitally important to everyone. That's like if I was an industrial designer and called everyone philistines because they don't appreciate the Bauhaus aesthetic... What? You don't care about that? *assumes condescending pose* Well, your iPhone wouldn't look as cool as it does without it maybe as an adult you should have a little desire to appreciate things even if you don't fully understand them, especially when you have someone really cool like bill nye trying to explain them to you

Everyone was obviously playing a bit for the comedy show except Bill Nye who seemed clueless about his situation. Did he think he was there to do a lecture or something? Those two celebs were exaggerating not just to set him up as a straight man, but to make a larger point, mocking the fact that he expects people to be as awestruck by space genetics as he is. As if people didn't have other priorities. That he insisted that people are interested shows how credulous he is. The fact that people might have different priorities offends certain religious types. Really, nerds online wouldn't be flipping out over this if it was a conservationist getting heckled while doing a bit about the latest endangered fish or an epidemiologist talking about new disease vectors, both topics of much more interest and importance to our lives than hypothetical space germs

Like I am personally not the biggest sports fan in the world but if you stuck me in a room with famous athletes and i got to ask them anything I wanted about the games they played you can bet I'd be curious about what they did instead of going "herf derf why should I care you put a ball through a net". Sure you see a facebook post about some new scientific development and you might just go 'cool' and scroll past it, but if you're talking to bill loving nye about it and can't get even a bit interested then you're beyond hope. As if nasa's budget is even a notable draw from the dod in the first place, "why aren't we going after ISIS instead" jfc you have to be kidding me.

The problem with the Nightly Show is that Ricky Valez is lovely and unfunny. I dunno who that girl was but she also was unfunny. The Nightly Show can have good panels but more often than not they're treated like a idiot's loving joke. Real Talk with Bill Mahr you actually have a decent amount of time for some discussion. Plus people there generally seem to give a poo poo about making a point relevant to the issue rather than just trying to poo poo all over the topic like a "cool" 14 year old.

"Some people don't give a poo poo about science" is a fine message, because it implies that the problem can be fixed with discussion. "Some people don't want to listen to poo poo about science" is a loving stupid message, but that's what it came across as. And this is why people resort to mean tweets, because at least they'll apparently listen to that poo poo. edit: "let's invite a sociologist to talk to us about race inequality...
