Their shape, the green color, etc. all make the cucumber cool. when compared to other similar growths the cucumber remains 95% of organismal heat under reference levels. plastic packaging helps for a clean environment for storage as well as for rotting, forgotten.
when tested in kindergarten for marketing, the children were found gouging the eyes of cucumbers, looking for the eyes. they had no mascot

it's because they are generally kept in a fridge which is known for cold temperatures, this doesnt work for humans because we are warm-blooded
