Healthy at any size.

If he physically cannot access food himself, his father needs to give some tough love and start feeding him properly and making it impossible for him to access additional food sources. This isn't hard.

Wire his jaw shut, put one of those nose tubes in. In 6 months let them evaluate him for actual food again .

I just can't wrap my head around being 800 pounds. How do people think to themselves, hmm these size 44 pants don't fit, time to go buy some size 46. Repeat until they can't get out of bed anymore. And after reading some of the stories of how much these people eat, how do they afford it? To maintain 800 pounds is like 15000+ calories a day.

Getting stuck in the same, tunnel vision routine that involves tv/computer/gaming marathons while snacking on whatever they feel like (which is usually foods that are super rich in calories) till they feel absolutely stuffed. Keep doing this same routine for weeks, months, years. Then one day you find you can't walk to the bathroom without feeling like you are going to break in half.

This is not Prader-Willi Syndrome, which is a legitimate condition that can be diagnosed and controlled, though not cured.

This is "I like food more than walking or being able to wipe my own rear end" syndrome. A far more deadly and obnoxious condition.

I have a little empathy for him, his disease is not well understood and its socially unpopular. Its hard to know how to help him. Perhaps in the same way we can commit a person involuntarily for their own mental health, we can do the same and basically force him to diet in a supervised environment where he cannot escape. Then once the weight is lost, he can get the mental help he needs to prevent him from reverting to his previous behaviors. Another thing we can do is shoot him in the head and let his bloated corpse feed the dogs and crows like the weak gently caress he is.

is this a joke lol. "socially unpopular?" have you been in america?

I've always wondered this.

He obviously can't work, so who was footing the bill at the hospital? At the rate he was losing, it would have taken 2.5 years to reach his goal of 550 lbs.

He lost 20 pounds in 80 days, meanwhile I have a coworker who had the whole "I played football then packed on a bit of pudge" look who lost about a pound a day for a couple weeks when he started a low carb diet starting in the low 200s. It's pretty obvious this guy was actively sabotaging his treatment and at a certain point it just becomes a waste of human resources, what are you going to do shackle him to a bed and forbid communication with anyone outside of hospital staff?

You don't need to forbid communication - just make sure no one brings poo poo in. I don't think you need to shackle him either given his condition.

I mean just pretend this is a heroin addict; you don't go 'well gently caress YOU then' when the heroin addict can't control himself trying to get heroin - you dry them out under medical supervision.

Maybe this hospital just isn't the facility for that though, which is valid. There should unironically be rehab clinics for fat people who need to lose weight but literally can't stop themselves because they're junkies.

While everyone loses weight at different rates, he absolutely had to be sabotaging their efforts. I'm sure dad was making regular trips to the cafeteria or bringing in food from home, and they just hadn't caught him yet.

I imagine that's what they were already doing. Do you think they just let dad walk in with a bag of oreos or something? He was getting extra food somehow and whatever monitoring they were doing wasn't sufficient so presumably he had his ways. Outside of putting someone in his room to stare at him constantly or just flat out forbidding him from meeting anyone they're not going to stop him from stuffing his face with food and that was clear to everyone involved.

Yes he was obviously cheating but he would have had to consume vast amounts of food from the outside to slow his progress to that level. If you are actively working at it 20lbs, at his weight, is nothing. His weight could fluctuate more than that from week to week for heaven's sake.

80 days, not 8 months. If he went 8 months losing only 20lbs might as well just butcher him for meat.

80 days still garbage progress.

Yeah, 20 lbs in 80 days, he had to be on his 5th or 6th warning for food smuggling.

There's a doctor in Texas who specializes in helping morbidly obese people, he's on TLC for almost all of their obesity programming. It's pretty amazing what happens to these fats, you see how they have to resort to emotional manipulation with the hospital staff once their primary enabler is unavailable. Even at home, if their enabler tries to resist at all, the verbal knives come out. You're absolutely right that it's an addiction. It's like a drug addict that can't physically move more than 2 feet trying to get drugs.

It's the same kind of behavior that comes out in intervention, how people will pretend to be in pain in order to get pills. These fatties will pretend to be in agony because they can't have 3000 calories per meal anymore. It starts with whining, then bargaining, then straight up verbal abuse to the staff, then they tell the doctor they want to check themselves out, 'I don't care about my health, I need to eat 20 deep fried stickers right now'. On one hand it's really sad, on the other, gently caress em.
