Fielder couldn't run, because Colabello could throw that way, Fielder's too slow to get out of rundown, so he had to just stand there.

He couldn't just get him out by throwing to someone (force out), Fielder needed to be tagged out.

When you've got a runner in a run down, you wait (so much as possible) until they start running in a direction to throw the ball so that they don't just run the other way.

If he throws to third, Fielder breaks for home. If he throws home, Fielder breaks for third (although Moreland was already there so there would probably be an out anyway). Holding on to the ball and running at Fielder forces him to make the first move.
