Writing from the epicenter of progressive thought, San Francisco, I would call attention to the parallels of fascist Nazi Germany to its war on its 'one per cent,' namely the Jews, to the progressive war on the American one per cent, namely the 'rich.'

Notorious b.s.d. posted:yeah in case you missed it, shadowhawk first moved into, then ended up running, an illegal hotel for techies. his dirty business is exactly what prop F is trying to destroy I used to live in a hacker hostel and ended up "investing" in it and then running the bookkeeping, where I quickly discovered the group of 3 houses was a big money pit. I then got to stay there for free, although cost-wise it worked out to slightly better than renting. I carried on bookkeeping after i didn't need to live there anymore as a favor to the owner, who is a friend of mine and had to keep dumping her personal cash into it to keep the place afloat. I advised her to close it earlier but she was a bit too attached to the community that'd emerged around it. The venture never broke even on an annual basis in terms of cash, though it did allow a person to stay at each house without paying in exchange for taking on cleaning/booking duties. AirBNB made a reasonable profit though. quote:they stuff like 30 desperate loving nerds in a 4 bedroom house by filling every room with bunkbeds. i cannot imagine the squalor. or odor.

Notorious b.s.d. posted:both these questions have the same answer: operating an unregulated hotel in a residential area is illegal and your neighbors will hate you Hell, a good chunk of people get grumpy if the house next door gets new renters every year. My neighbor was really happy I renewed my lease, not just because we get along great but because in his words "it is annoying to have your neighbor move out right once you get to to know them". in non-sf news it looks like austin is on track to completely ban non-owner-occupied short term rentals and also implement a lot stricter limits on the number of people who can stay in a place for everyone else. they've been having trouble with the houses being used as party spots for big groups and specifically bachelor parties.

indigi posted:go hard or go home, Austin. smdh. eh there's a pretty longstanding practice here of renting out a room or couch for someone to crash on during SXSW or ACL. i don't think the city would ban those because they are like the one way that residents of austin benefit from those events. otherwise more people might speak up and ask hard questions like "um why do we rope off downtown for two weeks and make our lives miserable just for out of town bros to get drunk and branded at? also why do we only charge a for profit company a pittance to close the city's centerpiece park from September to December?" they also want to tack on a whole bunch of other rules allowing photographs and video from neighbors of violations to be admissible to code enforcement. it isn't quite sf's proposed "sue the gently caress out of each other" rule but it is going to result in some really fun passive aggressive neighbor fights.

swamp cooler chat from the first page my whole building is cooled by a series of swamp coolers that run a network of chilled water pipes under downtown. http://downtownaustinblog.org/2010/03/25/chilled-water/ so there's no external hvac stuff on the building, the chilling towers around the city keep it cool
