I grew up in Chicago on the Southside in Westlawn/Clearing. Was alright I guess. There was the occasional shooting, but we only heard about it after the fact and it usually occurred in the park nearby. I remember never going east of Marquette Park because it was too dangerous / far. In the late 90s/early 00s, I had no problem walking around my neighborhood during the daytime. Nighttime wasn't too much of a problem, it was more of a 'why would I go walking around outside at night?' Then again, it was a fairly white/mexican neighborhood. Also, lol if you went to a Chicago public school. Any parent who had any money at all sent their kids to the private Catholic schools because CPS is poo poo.

Chicago sounds cool... but do you have a listener-supported jazz radio station? ( possibly )

but how could chicago public schools be bad when cps teachers have like the highest starting salary in the nation and they just raised my rent to pay for their pensions tho???? surely these must be the absolute best schools money can buy turning out bright young geniuses with promising futures.

The main places being gentrified are Logan Square, Humboldt Park and Pilsen with Logan Square being a terminal case. Gold Coast is really expensive, $1300 isn't very realistic and my friends who lived there paid over $2K but did live in really nice buildings so YMMV. Lincoln Park is as bad if not worse. It sounds like you'd probably be interested in someplace like Lakeview, Andersonville, Bucktown or maybe Ravenswood.
