The AGDQ 2015 Battleblock Theatre run is really good. It's a co-op speedrun which is interesting enough, but also features two of the game devs (one being internet weirdo Will Stamper) guest commentating in the call. It's great when devs see their game speedrun'd and all these handy timesaving flaws exposed.

I like two players on one controller, but I've just now stumbled across a Goldeneye run from AGDQ 2014 that's two players on two controllers, using a 'co-op' control style that was likely added into the game as a joke. It's also pretty impressive how insanely quick this gets; apparently Goldeneye is just a ridiculously optimized game in speedruns, and you can tell because these guys never stop. Regardless of the setup, two people outdoing what most single-person runs can manage is insane.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWDRtyq3Yhg

There's also this Wind Waker run that's one player, two controllers, since the optimal run includes the Tingle Tuner. I can't find it in a skim-through right now, but this run includes the first time I've seen a speedrunner's nose incorporated into their playthrough.

OFS beat me to the best examples I've seen of my favourite kinds with Super Mario World and Family Feud so instead I'll mention the TAS of Cave Story, because the dude wrote a program himself to make Windows TASing a thing that exists, and includes plenty of subtitled commentary to explain what's going on. Also Cave Story is a good game. :)

I'm still a huge fan of this Deus Ex speedrun. There's a more recent one that shaves of 7 minutes and looks far better, but it's mostly about using grenades to shift through locked doors, rather than using them to surf down buildings.

I used to be a big fan of the main SDA gameslist because they were likely to have a detailed explanation of what the gently caress is going on, and the how's / why's of the run. At this point, apparently all the "Speedrun Demos Archive SDA" speedruns are posted directly to youtube with zero explanations - the giant "about section" contains nothing but donation info. Half the screen is taken up by the douchebag playing the game and audience behind him, and commentary consists of mumbling "I, uh, uhmm, swing. Uhm, ah, I am swinging my fists while, uhm, running. Ah, if you ah like I swing as you run, uh that makes you run along while you, uhm, swing your fists". What the hell happened.

Cosmos's OoT and SoTN runs are my faves, mostly because he manages to calmly and simply explain exactly whats going on and why. Is there any other runs like that? Watching the world break around a speedrun and having nonsense pile up that suddenly results in a win state is cool an all, but its way more entertaining when someone is actually explaining why their inventory is suddenly entirely filled with shortswords.

You've seen Super Metroid run many times forwards, how about a any% reverse boss order run TASed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2tse9ytU3dA What sets this run apart is that Samus has to get to Ridley, fight him and then get out all without the suit that protects her from the lava.

Well that was fun. I've never actually seen a speedrun where they use the reserve tank, so having never beaten Super Metroid myself, I'd never seen the auto use animation. I thought it was a glitch at first.

I think my favorite part of that Super Metroid run is that it's not necessarily doing anything inhuman, a human could probably pull off all this, but you still need to TAS it because of the sheer courage involved. I don't even think having nerves of loving steel would help you keep the calm required when you're in a superheated room on your last energy tank when fighting Ridley.

Sage Grimm
Feb 18, 2013

Let's go explorin' little dude!
You'd probably want a couple more energy tanks if you're doing it by hand; the TAS gets down to 8 health at a couple points in that run while in Norfair. Especially after finishing off Ridley they use some of the health pickups to survive just enough to reach the energy tank afterward.

So practically the first character you meet is the final boss, and instead of making him invulnerable until the actual boss fight, they made him super hard to kill?

Am I following that right? That seems a completely bonkers way to build your game.

Dark Souls all bosses WR https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mzkfYy8oTBY
For people who don't know Dark Souls is a pretty hard game. This guy makes it look easy. The insane damage is mostly a product of the Red Tearstone Ring that he picks up in the Valley of Drakes in the beginning. The huge damage boost it gives comes with the trade off of only working while the wearer is below 20% hp. This means that he would die from 1 hit of all the bosses. Also notice all the clever ways the below 20% hp is achieved on the way to a boss losing as little time as possible. A few skips and glitches are used but mostly it's just a clever route and a lot of skill. You get get a few invincibility frames in the middle of a roll which is how a lot of stuff is dodged. You get a few more frames if your equipment load is low which is why he barely wears any armor. This run is probably as close to perfect as it is going to get until a new and faster route is discovered.

I wish the speedrun comments weren't so insular. I'm curious about how and why the glitches they abuse occur, but after someone's discovered the trick, they never explain it again. They just go "oh, I used the Tails glitch at the start of level 5". Sometimes the game resources page has info, but sometimes it doesn't. Or the comments are "I did what X person did in Y run at Z place". I really don't want to have to go to that run and figure out where in the video that exact movement is.

That's a strength of GDQ, I think. With co-commentators and a fair amount of time to fill, they can usually get to explaining any tricks, skips and glitches that come up.

How does he just completely skip past the Act 1 minibosses on some levels? I'm guessing it's because all the assets are preloaded onto one huge map and if you glitch to the end you'll just trigger the Act 2 boss? Either way, :stare:

Regardless, Two Worlds is not the most solidly built of games. When I played it, loving around I reached an area where a guy was guarding a gate. He said no entry, I stuck my sword in him. Turns out he's got insane health and would probably destroy me in one hit. Problem is, I got the magical technique of taking a step backwards - seriously, everything in Two Worlds can be fought by daintily hopping backwards whenever they wind up to hit you. So after like half an hour, I kill him. Open the gate. Behind it is the rebel camp, a faction I never heard of. They all hailed me as their saviour, thanking me for ending the king's mining operation.

I looted their entire town and spent the next five hours searching for the beginning of that subplot...no dice.

The arcade near me has this machine now. I tried it on easy and found out exactly how hard instant gravity is. I don't think they ever mentioned it but at that speed the pieces don't climb over any humps in the playfield, so you really have to make sure you have everything where you want it.

Some levels have their act transitions take place before the second act actually begins, like when Angel Island is set on fire, or in Ice Cap when the background changes to the sheets of ice floating on water. If you enter a special stage in Act 2, the barrier preventing you from revisiting Act 1 is gone, but you can't go back to a place that still used assets from Act 1.

My favourite TAS is the one where they use Knuckles to collect nearly every ring in the game.
