I make $16 an hour as an apprentice electrician and a journeyman can easily make twice as much as I do or more. You add in overtime and they're pulling in $3k+ per week. With overtime I can live comfortably, but $16 an hour 40 hrs straight time is chump change, and I'm single with no kids. I don't understand how someone working a minimum wage job can support a family. How is it possible?

Sir Mat of Dickie posted:have multiple jobs, borrow at exorbitant interest rates when something unpredictable happens It makes me sick when I hear somebody say that minimum wage jobs were never meant to be a career. Not everyone has the privilege to choose their career, nor do they necessarily have the opportunity to advance their career. We weren't all born in a bubble. Why can't a person making minimum wage support their family? That should be the very definition of minimum wage.

I couldn't get a second job because this one needed me available at all hours. Even without considering student loan payments, it was a huge struggle to get by. I kept getting told "you're still young, you'll be fine" and "at least you're getting paid that much!" I'm 28 and I look like Bernie now. At least I'm still young.

does anyone else feel like the debates focus on things that don't even make sense in our political system? Bernie is going on and on about how we need to increase taxes on the top 1% bla bla bla, but the executive branch alone doesn't hold the power to do that and congress is controlled by obstructionist far-right insanity. how the gently caress is he going to overcome that? why does he expect any of us to believe he can overcome it? it's a charade. at these debates, nobody ever stops and says, "yeah, but how do you think you'll actually accomplish that?" because it would admit that the premise of the debates are stupid people complain about a power grab by the executive recently, but back in the day of FDR the executive exercised WAY more power than today

seriously things like that NSA godsurge implant or their supposed cracking of 1024-bit diffie-hellman primes is cool as gently caress, and they're just doing their job as a spy agency, the NSA is cool and people whine too much about them in relation to the actual impact they have on our daily lives how about we fix things like growing income inequality, mass incarceration, congressional deadlock, and our schizophrenic federal budgeting rather than wasting the political stage with worrying about meaningless NSA spying

Al Borland posted:We have a spy agency though, its called the CIA. It "doesn't spy" on its own people though yeah the CIA is actually much scarier and more active than the NSA, in terms of exerting influence and control over governments and people to actualize perceived american goals. the NSA just tries to find ways to correlate and access communications so they can search for signals indicating possible dangers. they're not trading guns for hostages, materially supporting armed right-wing rebels, or selling cocaine.

though i totally support people's rights to try to evade NSA oversight. it's a fun cat and mouse game, and the outcome is that we all learn to secure our information systems better. the NSA are just really good hackers, in the end. if a company or individual can defend against the NSA, they have a good shot against anyone else who would try to get in their poo poo. the NSA's job is supposed to be difficult, and people should make it difficult for them, but that doesn't mean the NSA should stop trying.

In Burlington he got blocked in the first term since most of the conservative city council members wanted him to fail. However over time through a mixture of things such as compromise or the bully puppet he eventually started to improve the city. Despite his rep as crazy socialist you can see from his time as mayor he's a pragmatic get real world results type of leader. He also created more political involvement which means even when he was out of his office the following administrations kept his improvements and also progressive attitude of the city intact. Not to mention the president has lots extra powers -The power to nominate people to positions such as the supreme court and also to all the different federal agencies -Power of veto, being president means you have a good amount of control over bills since people want to avoid a veto threat -Power of executive orders
