While browsing the internet at work, I'm always checking through CL looking for deals, sometimes using the search feature in different ways just to see what pops up. So I just search Mazda > Manual Transmission and this little gem pops up instantly, posted the same day.

Nice looking low mileage Protige you have their, sir. I love it when people misspell poo poo so dudes like me can take advantage. Normally I would jump on poo poo like this in a heart beat, but I was short on cash. After emailing the guy he says he's gonna be out of town for over a week which works out perfect because I would have the cash by then, and I'm also banking on little interest in it because of the misspelling. The BG crowd knows what little gems these cars are and snatch them up, especially the manuals. And also because it's a manual, it keeps the casual car buyer away, so I'm thinking I've got the upper hand....Hopefully.

The guy gets back, car is still for sale, and I meet him the next day with cash in hand. He told me the windshield was toast because of the hood coming up on it on the interstate. It was his old roommate's who had passed away years ago and left it to him so it had been sitting awhile. Because of that he had a new gas tank and fuel pump installed because it wasn't getting fuel due to a rusty tank. He also had a box of brand new injectors to go with it, as well as just replacing the radiator and alternator. Apparently after he did all this the windshield accident happened and he said gently caress it and just wanted to get rid of it.....When I got in the car I instantly realized all the shifter bushings were completely shot, finding a gear was kind of a suggestion. Once I got it rolling out of the driveway, GRIIIIIIND, brakes are shot. Drove pretty good and my main concern was overheating so I made sure to push it a bit and then leave it running while I went over the rest of the car. Didn't overheat! Idle was surging BAD and almost cutting off, and there was a bad oil leak out of the valve cover that was making a ton of smoke. It looked and sounded a lot worse than it was so I offered him $500 and he took it.

TL;DR I bought a 90's Mazda shitbox.

Applebees Appetizer

No engine swaps planned, at least not for awhile, if I can get this engine running right it's gonna have a lot of life left. Goals for this car are to get it running and driving like new, so basically overhauling the suspension. The motor shouldn't be an issue but we'll see. Did I mention it has a bad exhaust leak as well? Gotta get that fixed asap along with the windshield. You can see how bad the windshield is at this angle.

Is it a 323? Put the VIN in here and see if it has a seat belt recall.

Looks like MX-3s were also lifetime, but not 323s.

I've seen some hacks for putting later MX-3 stuff in:
http://www.clubprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?60915-Manual-Seat-Belts&p=782894&viewfull=1#post782894

Might go that route with unversal 3 point retracting belts. Seems like they're about $30 ea shipped from the mainland, since no yards have MX-3s available.

Yes! Mine has too much body damage to put any appreciable amounts of money into it. I'm still less than $500 into mine, gets 35mpg driving like an rear end in a top hat, and just passed emissions with flying colors. It's low mileage too (113k).

Of course you can join, all Bee Gees welcome!

When I had my 323 the same thing happened, so I just went to the JY and got another one. Or you can swap in a manual belt from an 3 door Escort or Ford Probe....I think maybe an MX3 too, it just has to be a 3 door BG variant. That would be the way to go honestly, the automatic belts suck rear end.

I'm trying to get some Canadian manual belts for mine, AI goon iv46vi is looking for me, hopefully he finds some!

Thanks pimper of meat. A turbo definitely sounds like a fun idea, but I'm gonna focus on the suspension first. I'm contacting SuperPro bushings in Australia to get a quote for all the bushings I need, it's gonna be a pain according to the guys in the Protege forums. But apparently they are the best, so if any Aus goons want to look into that for me to bypass the bullshit it would be awesome, looking on their website it looks like they have vendors all over the continent. I have all the part numbers so it should be relatively easy to find them and ship them.

Congratulations on an excellent shitbox! I've owned, driven and 24hr-lemons-raced several 1989-1992 Mazda 323's (BG, all but one with the 130hp BP engine), and it's been hilarious. Mostly red hatchbacks, one of which is being raced this weekend. Spare parts brought along in the form of a black 323F that I'm also currently driving around in.

Silly picture:

Also, apart from the difficulty of fitting a turbo+downpipe+intercooler in front of the engine, most things about turboing it should be pretty much identical to a Miata. Do it.

Pretty sure that's a B8ME powered car, and if it is it's got a different manifold flange so to turbo one you're making a manifold completely from scratch. Or swapping a BP head on. Which is a good thing to do anyway because I've never seen a B8ME cam without some serious pitting.
e: also a BP head on a B8ME is cool because the B8ME crank is significantly lighter and makes for a slightly zippier engine.

Yeah I think you're right, unless there are B8 turbo manis floating around I won't be putting a turbo on it unless I swap in a BP.

Not sure if you can swap on a BP head either, but it would probably be easier to just swap the whole motor, wouldn't it?

The 1.8L DOHC ones are becoming a bit rare though. There weren't that many to begin with (the cheaper B6 are way more common, as well as some B8 in the 323F), and they're starting to fall apart from rust. There are also a few GTR and GTX ones, but they're pretty expensive and too often pimped to poo poo.

I sometimes feel like I should get a low-rust red 323 and keep it beautiful forever...

From what CharlesM was telling me earlier before i started the thread, the B8 torque is about the same as the BP so if that's the case once i tune it up and get it running as close to perfect as I can I'll be happy with it, all my cars are low HP four bangers so I'm used to it. Handling is the most important to me, and I know the potential of the BG chassis so I'm confident I can build me a pretty fun shitbox to tool around town in.

Brought it out to the driveway for a good pressure washin' and to flush the (god drat) cooling system.

I soaked down the engine bay with orange kleen to loosen up some of the grime, then hit it with low pressure.

Before:

After:

Looks a lot better in person. Then I started the flush process.

YUMMY! Used this flush poo poo that's supposed to be really good. Used half the bottle for the BG, the rest will go to the Miata.

After running that through, ran a few gallons of distilled water until it was clear. I have to keep lots of distilled water because my Miata goes through lots of it due to a leaking water pump which I will get to in the next decade or so :v:

How good is the flush stuff? Could it help a "clogged" radiator? I have this weird rare issue where on extremely hot days on the interstate my temp gauge will go way up but never overheat (01 Taurus) but otherwise around town on 100 degree days with ac on I would be confident letting it run all day without the temp gauge moving. Just took it on a 200 mile trip where the weather was in the 70s and the needle never moved. Rad shop just think it's clogged but it's a real PITA on a Taurus to get the rad out otherwise I'd have just thrown a new one in there.

Derail over I have always been fond of Protégés and 323s and I enjoy resurrecting a poo poo heap thread more than a new super at thread. Will be following.

If you go under the car on the catalog and search "closeout" in the search box next to the engine size, it will highlight any categories that have closeout parts in them. Since 99% of closeout parts all ship from the same warehouse, you can load up on cheap, old stock.

Yeah it was just water. I have straight distilled water in it now, but I'll probably add a gallon of coolant later just to help lube the water pump a bit.

Probably gonna paint the steelies as well unless i find the wheels I want sooner.

everdave posted:

Supposedly it's the best poo poo out there, search it on Amazon, it's relatively pricey but worth a shot. The main reason i got it was to get all the loving stop leak out of my Miata before I do the water pump job. I would try it out before going through a rad swap if it's a pain.

I was pretty obsessed with the BG platform for a while.

Then a 92 protege lx that I did the ZX2 SR suspension stuff to

Later I found a nice teal escort Gt that wasn't flipped over

Then I got a $300 323 for a few weeks before joining the army, ended up being the most fun to autocross with the tires @45 psi in the rear.

Kind of that weird attachment to a first car thing I guess. I thought they were the best of the time (until I owned a 91 Civic Si). I'm still a little charmed when I see one on the road.

Since then I've owned two 323's (last one was a bad decision) and a BP Kia Sephia. Had to get rid of the Kia because the kia specific parts were way too expensive for me to put anymore money into it.

I had a look at that Melbourne suppliers website after emailing you as well leica and while they don't stock the specific bushings they have a special request form so it's pretty likely they'll be able to get it if supercheap can't.

I would need the A pillar and B pillar plastic, as well as all the mounting hardware. I don't need the female latches as mine will work, just the belt assembly.
