Lutha Mahtin posted:the funny thing is though, these prepaid debit cards are actually a better deal for poor american people than payday loan lenders I thought they got rid of payday lenders a few years ago. Maybe it's just in my state, but it was in the news that they were no longer allowed to give them at insane rates, so they just stopped giving them at all and most of them closed, with a handful remaining open but the signs on the windows just say stuff like "check cashing" and "western union" and stuff. Every once in a while I get a flyer in with the ads in the mail for one offering payday loans, but it's always ones based in another state and on an Indian reservation (with a bonkers interest rate of like 400% for a two week loan). I used to know people that used the payday loan places before they became illegal, but it seemed as ridiculous to me as renting furniture. If you go in once, you'll get a few hundred to tide you over til payday, but then payday comes and you're a few hundred short, so you do it again. Seems like the kind of thing you could never get out from under.

There is a payday loan place in my city that literally has a sign out front that says something about "borrow money from friends". It always made me sad seeing payday loan places with a loving play area for kids in the waiting room. How loving sad is that if you're a kid playing with some cheap rear end toys while your parents poo poo away your financial security?

Credit union is the poo poo, that is why most people don't know they exist and what they actually do. They would be the ultimate solution against banking cartels that plague US. When you enter a credit union, you get a share, a vote and you can influence decisions of the board. Control = Win = No filthy rich bastards leeching of your hard earned money.

If you're poor and financially illiterate, imagine how abstract "Spokane Teachers Credit Union" sounds. What average person would think that's somewhere they could bank unless they were a teacher in Spokane? Some cac, obviously. Edmund Sparkler fucked around with this message at 07:58 on Oct 22, 2015 |

Making things worse, the RushCard terms have an arbitration clause, so there's probably no way the users can get a class action going. Realistically no one's going to arbitrate so there's very little chance anyone sees any compensation for this other than the limp-dick promise to waive fees until February.

The deposits are supposedly FDIC insured, so if RushCard goes under, at least the users wouldn't lose whatever money is in their accounts. But who knows how long it would take for that to get sorted out.
