Bank accounts can be a bitch to get if you have bad credit and if you have no idea how finances work, good luck figuring out all that poo poo.

Even when you can get a bank account, they gently caress you over with fees.

I was with US Bank for years and then the market went to poo poo and they started charging monthly fees and demanding minimum balances or bank endorsed credit card accounts to waive those fees.

Go to a credit union and never look back. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure that you have to live somewhere white as gently caress to even have a credit union in your area.

Anyway, if you want to know what the Black Internet thinks of all this, just look here.

Lol, try a $1,000 minimum balance to avoid monthly fees just for having a loving checking account.

the funny thing is though, these prepaid debit cards are actually a better deal for poor american people than payday loan lenders :pwn:

I thought they got rid of payday lenders a few years ago. Maybe it's just in my state, but it was in the news that they were no longer allowed to give them at insane rates, so they just stopped giving them at all and most of them closed, with a handful remaining open but the signs on the windows just say stuff like "check cashing" and "western union" and stuff.

Every once in a while I get a flyer in with the ads in the mail for one offering payday loans, but it's always ones based in another state and on an Indian reservation (with a bonkers interest rate of like 400% for a two week loan).

I used to know people that used the payday loan places before they became illegal, but it seemed as ridiculous to me as renting furniture. If you go in once, you'll get a few hundred to tide you over til payday, but then payday comes and you're a few hundred short, so you do it again. Seems like the kind of thing you could never get out from under.

There is a payday loan place in my city that literally has a sign out front that says something about "borrow money from friends".

It always made me sad seeing payday loan places with a loving play area for kids in the waiting room. How loving sad is that if you're a kid playing with some cheap rear end toys while your parents poo poo away your financial security? :smith:

idk in my experience they tend to be more of a private thing for government employees. like if the state signs your paycheck, you have access to one, whether you're a county janitor or a firefighter or whatev. though i've seen a couple local ones in the continental us where they seem to be much more inclusive.

Credit union is the poo poo, that is why most people don't know they exist and what they actually do.
They would be the ultimate solution against banking cartels that plague US.
When you enter a credit union, you get a share, a vote and you can influence decisions of the board.
Control = Win = No filthy rich bastards leeching of your hard earned money.

There's a computerized background check run by ChexSystems whenever you try and open an account - if you've ever passed bad checks or had an account closed because of delinquency, you're blacklisted from ever opening an account again.

Also, if you don't have established credit you're probably not getting an account either.

Seeing that many poor people living paycheck-to-paycheck would have a hard time keeping a required minimum balance of $100 or thereabouts in an account at all times, and also have a hard time coming up with the money needed to make an initial deposit...it's very hard to get a bank account if you're poor.

Making things worse, the RushCard terms have an arbitration clause, so there's probably no way the users can get a class action going. Realistically no one's going to arbitrate so there's very little chance anyone sees any compensation for this other than the limp-dick promise to waive fees until February.

your local credit unions must be pretty clueless. a whole bunch of them around here have changed their names to neutral-sounding brands, & i know theres at least one that doesn't even say "credit union" on some of their signage.

The deposits are supposedly FDIC insured, so if RushCard goes under, at least the users wouldn't lose whatever money is in their accounts. But who knows how long it would take for that to get sorted out.
