:siren:Season 2 information in the second post - Season 2 is released 16th December, 2016.

The Man in the High Castle is a dystopian alternate history television series created by Frank Spotnitz (X-Files) and produced by Ridley Scott (Blade Runner) for Amazon Studios. The series is based on the 1962 novel of the same name by American science fiction author Philip K. Dick. The story is an alternate history of the world in which the Axis powers won World War II. The United States has been partitioned into three parts: The Japanese puppet state of the Pacific States of America, which comprises the former United States west of the Rocky Mountains; a German puppet state of the Greater Nazi Reich that comprises the eastern half of the former United States; and a neutral zone that acts as a buffer between the two areas, called the Rocky Mountain States.

The show has been in development for a number of years at a number of venues.

In 2010 it was announced that the BBC would co-produce a four-part TV adaptation of The Man in the High Castle for BBC One together with Ridley Scott. In February 2013, Scott and Frank Spotnitz had taken the project to SyFy. In October 2014 filming began on the pilot of the show for Amazon Studios.

The pilot debuted on January 15, 2015 and was Amazon's "most-watched since the original series development program began." On February 18, 2015, it was announced that it has been picked up for a season of 10 episodes to be released November 20, 2015.

Synopsis posted:

:siren: Netflix Amazon Rules Update! :siren:

OK, here's what we're going to try as a test. Some people are not happy with the go-wild aspect of the Netflix threads so we're going to try a different approach. If you have general thoughts on the show that's fine. If you are doing specific reactions to episodes they will go into labeled spoiler tags with the episode you are on or have completed for the first 72 hours. If you haven't gotten to that episode then don't click on the spoiler. And now an example post:

So far the show is good. I enjoy this show so far through episode 10. It is a fine television program.

1x10
The thing that happens in this episode certainly happened. And how it tied back into what they were saying in episode 3 was definitely a cool thing. I think the villain that appeared in this episode and did the villainy thing was bad. He should be punched by Hitler and have to go to jail.

The 1x10 is just the episode you're up to. You can write all about episode four if you want, but if you let something slip that came out later and you forget and it maybe happened in episode six that's why you still put episode 10 and not episode 4. Get it? Hope it works. And if not sorry!
:siren: Addendum: Try to keep major book plots in spoiler tags, we don't know the full extent of what the show is using or discarding from the novel just yet :siren:

Posters:

Info:
Filmed primarily in Seattle (standing in for San Francisco and New York); Roslyn, Washington (standing in for Colorado/Neutral Zone) and Vancouver (various)
Some scenes filmed in Berlin and around Germany.

Rotten Tomato score: 96% out of 24 reviews so far.

I noticed a few things when looking for photos or taking my own screenshots from the two episodes or trailers to add to the OP:
  • The Nazi (presumably the SS HQ) building is where the UN buildings is in New York.
  • The airport with the monorail is named after George Lincoln Rockwell, founder of the American Nazi Party.
  • They renamed the San Francisco airport since the pilot first went up in January; it used to be the Hirohito International Airport, now the Pan Pacific International Airport.

ep 2: Now, did the undercover Nazi go to save Juliana because the film immediately filled him with the spirit of Uncle Sam and he doesn't want to be a Nazi anymore, or did he just do it because he has a crush on her and is later gonna try to convince her to become a Nazi? I got the impression at the time that it's the former, but the latter would be way more interesting to me.

Frank. :(

Episode 2
Joe is questioning everything, the film would be too hard to fake and something must be going on. I'm guessing he just wanted to save her so he could ask questions about the film, since his handler wouldn't talk about it.

When Franks sister's family went into the room I thought the plastic covers were for a firing squad that'd be on the other side of the wall. I didn't expect it to be Zyklon-D.

Yup, we don't know when their timeline split from ours, or how. Maybe Germany pushed into the Soviet Union earlier, during summer and not autumn and they were able to bring most of the army back to the Atlantic wall and repel any Operation Overlord attempts to re-take Europe. Who knows, all we do know is that there was a landing at 'Virginia Beach' and that they dropped an A-Bomb on Washington DC to win the war, presumably under threat of other cities getting hit.

It doesn't matter for the show, just the fact that the Axis did win and ended up occupying Europe and America.

bartlebyshop posted:

Could it not be that the film reel is from their world, where the Allies were winning the war (and the reels hadn't been shown to the public yet), but the Nazis and Imperial Japan created the atomic bomb first? I've read too much "Nazis win" alternative history but in a lot of it the Axis builds the bomb first and nukes DC, London, and Moscow and then Bad Things Happen.

Well, the film reel isn't from their world/reality because while it is American-centric and doesn't show any Battle of Berlin footage however it does show that famous clip of the swastika emblem being blown up at Zeppelinfield in Nuremberg at the end of the war.

Edit: VVV I don't think he shows up in the tv show, he'd still be in a coma in some hospital in Poland.

Although the trailers for The New Order do fit decently with this tv show, I could see the soccer umpire ending up in the show on tv:

Just watched episode 10. I liked the series, it took a different approach to some parts then I thought it would (based on the book which I read after the pilot came out in Jan) but I enjoyed the production values, the cast was great and almost always engaging.
The pace is slower but I loved how it seemed like a 10 hour movie, with each episode picking up right after the last ended. It could have been one 10 hour movie and it'd still work, although you'd only get to see the great title scene once if that were the case.

And when the one resistance guy examines the films to verify them... whats he looking for exactly? All the films are different, its not like hes seen them all and can identify every scene and thing in them that holding a magnifying glass up to one or two cells hes going to be able to say for certain if the film is what they are looking for, genuine, or if its some fake nazi film or some guys home movie.
Making sure it isn't kust a reel of popeeye.

I'm sure if it shows anything military without prolpgamda title cards before i it must be banned, therefore must be the film they want.

Season 2 trailer, seems like it should be a lot better, especially the Trade Minister segments:

I think I'll just keep this thread going, only 11 pages in, I don't think we warrant a new thread for the show. I'll update the OP when we're closer to release.

Four episodes in and I have found it a lot better compared to S1 so far, at least in terms of the middle of the season after they initially established the world.

Liking where this is headed.

Finally had time to knock the last 4 episodes out last night and tonight. Season 2 was so much better than Season 1.

Kido and Tagomi are great, hoping it gets a third season, I want to see where this goes.

^^^

Darwin was bombed more than Pearl Harbour was in WW2. You could assume in this timeline it became the major port for the continent as it was closer to Japan. Or it housed a large military installation/port (like ww2) for control of the region.

Also the fact the US was in the great depression until the late 30s/early 40s in this world because there was no New Deal and economic growth when FDR was assassinated. So a competent nazi regieme which provided infrastructure and jobs would be seen as a good thing.

I guess.
