Battleborn - What is it? Its basically a moba in a similar style to SMNC but done very stylistically and shares many similarities to Borderlands.

There are two main game modes right now:

Story - Co-op gameplay that focuses on shooting things and having cheesy voice overs tell bad jokes soaked heavy in memes. IMO its charming at times but really grinding at others. Very borderlands.

Versus - This is basically an SMNC mode. There are lanes and bots that try and get to the other side of the map. Your job is to kill other Battleborns and escort your bots to the other side of the map. This is easily the games best game mode.

:siren: This is a closed technical Alpha but if you sign up NOW you will be immediately given a key. This probably won't last long, apply for a key here: https://rsvp.battleborn.com/ :siren:

This post is very sparse, I know, its a closed alpha with an NDA so I am not too sure how much I can say here, I also just don't have that much information on the game right now, but I will try and update this post as I can. Wanted to get this out quick so people could grab a key before they lock it down.

Goon mumble is reticulated splines in PGS: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3715171

:siren: This is important, do these things!:siren:

-When a melee character is in your face Use middle mouse button to melee, it knocks them out of melee range and you can easily escape.
-On the minimap (press 3 to make the minimap bigger) orange shard looking things will appear, when they do it means shards have spawned. Go to those areas and attack the shards and collect the broken shards once they are destroyed. Whoever destroyed it gets the most but some of the shards are always shared to the whole team.
-Use shards to upgrade turrets, activate gear and also Spawn super robots! Super robots are located next to the center most shard on the map, one on each teams side. You can buy super robots for a lane or for both if you are shard rich.
-Hit B to teleport to base! It takes ~3 seconds to teleport and any damage you take will cancel it, as well as performing any action. When you teleport back you will instantly get full health and shields!
-Push to talk is enabled and voice activated by default, its stupid. Change it to push to talk.
-Confused as to what your character does? Hit 1, it not only is how you level but describes all of your character's abilities/traits.

As of right now there is no grind as far as I can tell for versus. Not sure how that might change at release but right now everyone can play all the heroes they have ready to play from the get-go and as far as I can tell there isn't really anything obtained for levelling up other than really really modest perks, but I haven't really take a magnifying lens to them. They will probably eventually go with the LoL or HotS model and do battleborn rotation would be my guess.

The real suggestion here is, if you played and enjoyed SMNC you will enjoy this game quite a bit.

I had a really sour 1st impression because I tried Montana (the super huge mini gun guy). He felt very underpowered to me, taking a really long time to actually kill people. His skills were pretty boring also. After trying a different hero/battleborn or whatever the hell you call them I had a shitload more fun. I don't know if I was missing something about Montana but he just seems like he is poo poo. I think they have a lot of balancing to do.

I work on Battleborn.

We're definitely keeping an eye on feedback so if you have any feel free to post it in Gearbox's official NDA forums located here: http://forums.gearboxsoftware.com/c/battleborn/closed-technical-test (you will need to be logged in to see this)

My tips:

-Use offhand melee (middle mouse click) for pesky melee characters in your face, it has a knockback effect and does decent damage.

-Everybody likes different characters, so if you don't like one character, definitely try out another. I know out of the 25 I have like 3-4 favorites that I usually pick.

-Map Awareness is a thing, people think these areas are useless but do some exploring of the PvP maps for shards and stuff, they will help you out quite a bit, especially once you start getting some of the more expensive gear.

Anyways, hope you guys dig it. We're working hard on it, and I have fun playing it even after 300+ hours :)

Yup, and even moreso once you have access to all the content we're not showing yet. We are not free to play however, we are definitely going to give you as much value we can put into a $60 title as we possibly can.

Nice. When you say gear, do you mean the turret upgrades around the map, or are there purchase-able items that I somehow missed?

Also what's the deal with the packs you get sometimes? You put boosts on a loadout but it mentions something about an "activation cost." What am I spending to activate it, and when and where do I activate it?

Gear is essentially like round-based buffs you can give yourself in both Campaign and PvP game modes. Gear is found mostly through playing the Campaign levels (they come as "packs" you find when bosses die or in loot crates/chests throughout the level) but you can also buy gear with currency you earn by playing both Campaign and PvP modes (blue number currency stuff). So you don't HAVE to play campaign to earn gear, you could play purely PvP and still be able to buy gear packs.

So you get your gear, organize it into your loadouts, and then next time you play PvP or Campaign you will have access to "activate" these gear. To activate them you need Shards which are a resource in PvP and Campaign maps (the glowy orange crystal things), the amount of shards you have is right above your health/shield bar on the lower left. These are somewhat distributed out to your team as well, so if you decide to just farm shards all round you'll be helping your team out as well.

When you activate the gear it's on for the remainder of that match? Is the gear used up at that point or are you able to activate it again in a later match?

It's active throughout the match, and that's it. You will have to re-activate it for each new round. This helps reduce people from just steamrolling an entire team if one team just has a ton of super-rare gear, they still have to gather stuff to activate it, and the rarest/most powerful gear costs the most amount of shards (end-game activation most likely). Whereas some gear is pretty cheap and you can activate it all really early on, but the buff is not as significant.

Instead of jungling for XP/Currency to spend ONLY on your character, like in a traditional MOBA, Battleborn gives you the option to either spend it on yourself OR on buildables (turrets, support nodes, super minions) that help your team.

OK cool two things.

1) Please PLEASE don't make it so we have to farm campaign modes to stay competitive and use gear. I should be able to use gear in every round if I just play PvP, don't force players into campaign if they don't want to go in naked into PvP sometimes. As I have not really messed around with gear I don't know what the balance of this is at all. Is it like every round in pvp you get enough points to use gear? And like the poster above me asked, is gear consumed on use? Mostly I am just saying this as someone who is probably only going to play PvP.

2) What can I post and what can I not post so I do not break NDA?

2) I'm not here to enforce the NDA but if you have very specific stuff you'd like to talk about the actual test and character/gameplay/etc feedback it's probably best to put it where GBX people will actually read it and take it into account.

Yeah I'm still a bit confused about gear, but I will mess around when I get the chance this weekend.

My current understanding is, doing campaign or PvP earns you blue currency. You can then use blue currency to unlock gear which you have forever. When you equip gear you can use the gear in game but it costs shard, a resource collected in game.

I played a couple games with two guys who were playing Montana and a dedicated Miko for him and they did pretty well, so maybe there is something there with the right build and a healer. That said I thought he sucked too and most Montanas I've played with were totally useless.

It's always kind of dumb to talk about balance before putting a lot of time in to a game like this, but Rath, Phoebe, Miko, Marquis, and Thorn if you can hit the arrows really seem to be a cut above the other heroes. Then again that's half the roster right now soooo...

Can't really bring myself to play much what with having to wait half an hour per game because of the "player left matchmaking" crap. Also was pretty disappointed there were only 10 dudes when they said 15, I know they are supposed to open up the other later or whatever, but give me a break, if it's 10 then say 10. Silly stuff.

Also everyone is really, really bad right now. Like I don't think 90% of people know you can base with B and heal yourself up. I sure didn't until someone told me.

My comments

Single player / Coop:
This is much more designed with coop in mind. You know, I never thought Borderlands was really a coop game. It may have been more fun with more players, because almost every game is more fun with more people, but it really wasn't designed for coop. The open world nature of the game where it goes on and on, talking and returning to quest givers, buying and selling equipment, having to stop pretty often to compare weapons stats and pick and choose, lots of things that stopped the action for a good smooth coop experience.
This, in the other hand, is a campaign divided up in discrete levels of similar length, and you can choose what level you will play from a menu, in a simple manner. And no random loot or quest givers that slow down your progress, it's a much more straightforward action game. That said, precisely not having random loot and not having persistent leveling will kill the interest for most Borderlands players. Just because it's made by Gearbox and it has some elements like the same shield/health system it doesn't mean it's done for BL players. It also features the same humor, btw, including a homicidal robot who talks to you constantly, and who tries to cheer up the boss of the level to kill your group.
The design of the level is interesting, I like the art style, very colorful and saturated, it's a shiny and bold future. It's cartoony but still shows graphic detail, thanks to Gearbox dropping the BL cellshaded look. I also liked the design of the enemies.
Like in pvp, you level up your character but it's limited to that single level, the next one you start again at level 0.
It's decent fun, and it has some replayability with all the characters the game has, but as I say, it's also a pretty straightforward action coop experience, I don't think you are going to be buying this game at release price for just playing the campaign (though we don't know important factors like how big it is).

PvP:

There are three game modes in pvp, but only one available in the beta. It consists of two lines of robots in a symmetrical looking map that walk to their death to a giant garbage collector with maws that destroy the robots. So you try to escort them and destroy the enemy robots meanwhile, gaining points for every robot that reaches the goal.
People are calling this a MOBA, but really it isn't. You don't have a tug of war push in the map destroying the enemy defenses until you attack the enemy base. In fact you don't attack the enemy base, as the "goal" point of the robots isn't the opposite end of the map. In practical terms you just attack the enemy team and also their robots, if there is no enemy players in the area.
The first two matches were a bit meh, but later I got better games and it clicked with me. The game mode is a bit more interesting than I thought: in the last match we lost even if we had 8 more kills, so the objectives matter more than the team deathmatch, I like that. The robots wave "goal"/exit point change twice over the course of the game, going slightly deeper into the enemy area, so the game action changes with it.
There is also a... mini-jungle metagame, or something like that. A few seconds away from the action, there are some crystals you can destroy and take their shards, with the shards you can buy two things
-you can unlock and activate your gear, which are 3 passive bonuses stuff you choose before the game.
-you can buy and upgrade a few turrets (sniper, support, lightning) in predetermined places in the map, giving you an edge in the game to your team.
So in addition to fighting the opponents and destroying their robots, you should also take care of the crystals. I found that there are some natural lulls in the action, or when you don't have shields and have to retreat, it's a good opportunity to take a pair of them.

Metagame:
The game is too slow at first, like slightly slower than TF2 which already was slow. Then you notice you have a sprint button, which is unlimited even and you don't have to hold it, so in truth you always use it making the speed of the game more decent. In fact I have to say it's a design flaw, kind of, because why you have a sprint button if there is never a reason to not be using it? It would make more sense to eliminate it and make the normal walking at the speed of the sprint speed.
The action itself isn't as tight and slick as a CoD game for example, but it's pretty serviceable imo. The overall lethality is low, you aren't going to be killed in three two or hits here, giving you time to use your abilities (or for your support to heal you), to get close to the enemy if you are a melee guy, or maybe run away if you know you are going to lose. You are at a clear disadvantage when the enemy has more numbers than you, and even more when the enemy has all the roles covered (ranged, melee, support) and you don't, so there is an incentive in having some team coordination.

The game already has some hooks for microtransactions yayy??. There is a ingame currency and you can spend it in unlocking more characters (I suppose they will introduce more than the starting 25 after launching the game, or maybe a few ones will be locked and with just a dozen games you will unlock them) and you can also spend it in loot crates. Because yes, the game has random loot crates, with a lovely animation when you open them up, it's all the rage these days.
Said loot crates it's what you win after playing a coop or pvp game or when your level up your account. The loot are the passive bonuses I commented before, like slightly faster shield recharge or a bonus to attack damage with a malus of less critical damage, so in theory higher level players have an advantage of lower level players. But in reality, the better the bonus, the more ingame points (crystal shards) need to be activated in a game to be functional, so there is some semblance of balance.

The UI could have some less clutte, for example I don't need to see the "gear box" at the bottom once I activated everything.

It's pretty different. This has got a fair bit more MOBA-inspired stuff in it. Where Overwatch takes a lot from TF2 this seems to be a lot closer to (Super) Monday Night Combat. You've got AI minions running around and the map is definitely laid out more like a MOBA map, though as Turin Turambar mentioned you're not like, pushing into a base really. There's also the fact that you pick a character and stick with it for the whole match whereas Overwatch lets you switch heroes at any time.

Who does the writing team picture being the ideal consumer for their content? I really want to know what kind of person they picture, because the idea I have in my head is fairly hideous and I have a lot of problems lining up my desire to spend time with a game mechanic I enjoy alongside deep frustration at literally every piece of the script. It doesn't feel written for children either, it's like nine-year-old humour laced with twenty-year-old cynicism and sixteen-year-old special-snowflakedness.

I know nobody sets out to tell a bad story, but I can't understand how the writing gets progressively worse instead of better as other parts of the products show the inverse.

Obviously I have no idea what I'm talking about, because people are clearly into it and buying the product, but I simply cannot wrap my head around the process or who exactly the audience is.

Can't comment on how much you hate the writing or humor, it's not for everybody.

About the test specifics? Nope.

Also you might think it's an ocean of comments but I assure you they keep a close eye on feedback that is especially well written and thought out. If you have legitimate concerns make your own thread or find a thread that is pertaining to the type of feedback you'd like to submit.

Knifegrab
Jul 30, 2014

Gadzooks! I'm terrified of this little child who is going to stab me with a knife. I must wrest the knife away from his control and therefore gain the upperhand.
The writing is pretty exceptionally awful. I just pretend it doesn't exist and play my own music. Everything else feels pretty solid. If any bros wanna battle it up for a halloween pvp-tacular I'm just chilling in mumble.
