With the success of dystopian teen drama's such as "The Hunger Games", "Divergent", and "The Maze Runner" I feel it's only suitable that we get in on this gravy train and write our own book trilogy which will be inevitably be made into a four part film series. I've put together a basic checklist of some of the things our story will need

- A snappy name either beginning with "The" or consisting of a single, edgy word.

- A reluctant teen hero aged about 17, preferably with a slightly unusual name

- An evil government/corporation with a dark and menacing name (bonus points for acronyms)

- Token black guy

- A weapon that the main character is highly skilled in, despite it being highly impractical in a world with guns (nunchucks anybody?)

- A love interest who starts out cold but slowly warms up to the protagonist

- Gimmicky event that happens every night/week/month/etc.

- Anything else you can think of

I'm interested in seeing what people can come up with, hopefully this will turn into a best seller and we can all grow content and fat(ter) off of the earnings.

Not enough blatant plagiarism. You gotta steal from a proven formula. I suggest rewriting the hunger games and just changing one letter in every proper noun, ie Catnips Evverdeen.

If hunger games sues us, we will countersue by claiming we were actually plagiarizing Battle Royale. Check and mate.

"The Comet Disruptors"

it stars a bisexual troon half muslim /half jew called khilali ibn bernstein.

plot: a seemingly ancient curse sends a comet on the last day of every month to smash into the planet and annihilate all life. disaster has been averted through the ages by a shadowy corporation called ''Axorn Inc" who fire a laser at the comet, which draws a huge amount of power at huge cost to the public, leading to a dystopian poverty-ridden society effectively under the thumb of Axorn.

But one day, while Khilali is finishing a feminist-themed graffiti masterpiece at an Axorn warehouse, a terrible secret is unveiled about the curse and its connection to the shadowy 'saviour' corporation....

S: Lindsaay you're the best pole vaulter in the entire Sec-Force Hyper-Tribe, and you've vaulted... into my heart
*Lindsaay licks her lips*
L: Stavin, at first I hated you for destroying my way of life but now I realize: my entire way of life was destruction, being with you seems like it's meant to be
*Stavin pulls his shirt off, revealing a shiny metallic tattoo of a solar system with his navel being the sun and his nipples being a binary planet*
*Lindsaay runs his hands over his totally built chest*
L: What is this of? Is this why you can't take your shirt off?
S: I was taken by the OverCaptoids. Taken and trained to do violence against my own kind. They put marks on all of us, like animals. *Turns head aside, ashamed*
L: I think... it's beautiful. I never heard of the OverCaptoids doing anything beautiful. *Her fingers trace a complicated looking line from the sun to the left planet*
S: The OverCaptoids always rewarded those who served them. I... was the best
*Quickly puts his shirt back on like he's ashamed of his fabulous body and badass tattoo*
S: That's all I want to say about my time as Head Of The Ober-Humans. It's not something I'm proud of.
* Lindsaay respects his personal boundaries, not like those other chicks who were just trying to get promoted in the Sec-Force*
L: I have to go.

*Lindsaay quickly leaves, sneaking back to the Vaultteam Barrack Tunnel so no none sees that she's bangin' the boss, even though she didn't and that's just their lower understanding that can't comprehend their bonding over being tainted by suffering as well as being totally hott*

nah, while people on tumblr bitch and moan if everyone important is white, that is exactly what sells in the us. pretty (but not too pretty) white girl with tragic circumstances that everyone is obsessed with for no apparent reason, two white male love interests whose supposed competition for the bland heroine is loaded with unintentional homoerotic tension. the whole drat world revolving around some idiot girl while sexy boys fawn over her has been like crack for teenage girls for decades; the only thing that has changed is the setting. blatant pandering just seems to work really well on that demographic for some reason.

As long as anyone can remember, society has been divided up into two groups: the Bronze Falcons and the Amber Quadrant. Separated by a mile-high wall, the two groups know nothing of one another--that is, until young Terse Huntson crash lands on the other side when his solar glider is shot down near the wall. Out of his element and afraid for his life, Terse has nothing but myths and rumors of the Amber Quadrant to guide him, and the kinetic sling strapped to his belt to defend himself with.

Unlike real-world dictatorships, where the government encourages everyone to unite against an external enemy, the dystopian government divides everyone into groups (e.g. the Districts in Hunger Games, the factions in Divergent) and encourages them to compete with each other. Also sexism, racism, and religious bigotry don't exist

It was getting dark as Lindsaay walked down the alleyway within the city, suddenly she felt a pair of strong arms grab her and drag her into a nearby building. "What are you doing!" The strong voice said to her. Lindsaay turned around to see a muscular, dark skinned young man who must have been no older than herself staring back at him. "You can't go out at night," he continued, "that's when, The Enforcers come out."
"The Enforcers?" responded Lindsaay, she was confused by this mans behavior but he seemed to be trying to help her.
"They're President Hope's private bodyguard, they patrol the streets looking for people breaking curfew."
"What happens if they find you?" She inquired.
"I... I don't know, we never see any of them again." replied the young man, a hint of sadness in his voice. "Name's Stavin by the way, pleased to meet you."

Stavin, explaining this stuff to lindsaay like she'd grown up in a cave, which come to think of it she did:

When the Enforcers rose to power under President Hale, they tried to crack down on quanttech.
L: Quanttech?
S: A mix of quantuum-physics enabled nanotechnology. Each tribe had to act fast to embed it everyday objects where it couldn't be found. The Amber Quadrant Coalition put it into metal, which is what makes them such fearsome armored knights. The Bronze Falcons put theirs into clothing, giving them them strength and speed.

*They cross by a bunch of thugs all wearing trenchcoats (enforcers), beating a group of people all dressed like shabby Jedi*
L: What tribe are they?
S: Those... are The Disciples. They're the smallest tribe with the least territory. Hope cracks down on them as much as he can.
L: What did they do with their quanttech? Why don't they fight back?
S: The Disciples put their quanttech into themselves. I've only heard rumors, but they're supposed to be the most powerful of all the tribes, although they believe in peace and endurance over violence.
L: What can they do?
*Stavin shrugs*
L: So you haven't explained. What's the Sec-Force, and what's a hyper-tribe?
*Stavin grins*
S: There's no such thing as a hyper-tribe. Hasn't anyone told you?

Quanttech background notes:

-QT enabled textiles can move in concert with the wearers thoughts, providing speed and strength. example: a group of bronze-falcon stealth infiltrators dressed in identical uniforms runs at like 40 mph up to a fortress where their kind are being held. They take off their cloth belts (which auto-knot together when their colored ends tough) and stretch it between two groups of people holding on to it parallel to the wall, like a tug of war. A Badass black chick runs at it perpendicular (so straight at the wall) and takes a huge leap at it. The rope holds and springs super-hard, shooting the one chick way up into the air, where she alights on an enforcer's shoulders, kicking his rear end. She then grabs the thrown end of the combo-rope and all the other Falcons climb up, the whole process taking only a couple seconds and done in darkness and silence

-QT enabled metals can take any shape as well as being arbitrarily sharp/large cutting/stabbing weapons (swords etc.) example: You invade a Amber Quadrant home, the inhabitants run into their kitchen - all their frying pans and cookie sheets and silverware combine into coherent armor that looks like Rufio's from Hook, their kitchen knives get longer and all of a sudden you're facing people with shields and breastplates and poo poo. They move in fast but straight-line motions, like robots.

-A QT enabled human (The Disciples) spends most of their time meditating and making music- learning to control the power within them. When at the end of the movie any of them does a drat thing, a Disciple calmly walks in front of a firing squad going to excecute a group of Falcons. She throws back her hood to reveal a subtly cgi-glowing face. She spreads her arms and as the enforcers open fire all the bullets stop/disappear. Then she pulls her arms together like she's grabbing an armful of pillows and all of a sudden a dozen glowing bullets reflect back at the enforcer squad. They drop dead, each having a single bullet to the head. She looks sad and turns to release the Falcons.

-The hypertribe(s?) have all factions united in like a virtual clan with uneasy relationships. Stavin's hypertribe is the only one with a Disciple, who always counsels caution and compromise. The Disciple is a gorgeous blond chick ripped out of a nazi recruitment poster, but her inner calm can't cover up her interest in Stavin. She never shows her power in training or what-have-you, but everyone is slightly scared of her and uneasy, except for Stavin who seems to know more than everyone else

To become like 99% of these movies you need to totally introduce lots of excuses for the likely female hero to make out with the hunky male sidekick. Because that is priority one. Priority two is introducing a second hunky male sidekick, also to make out with.

That said the 2nd Hunger Games movie was actually pretty watchable and reminded me more of depressing 70s sci-fi than most young adult movies. The 1st one felt like a shakycam PG-13 rip-off of Battle Royale and I didn't bother watching yet another "movie studios spread a book over two movies" bullshit film.

Breetai posted:

This reminds me of the hilarious Battle Royale II. Anyone who has not seen that movie needs to stop what they're doing, put their expectations through the floor, and seek out the most amusingly super-super-pro-terrorist film ever. Like literally the happy ending is the hero joining Al Quida. It's loving amazing in how bad it is, and has jack all to do with the first one.

It also features a guy that shows up in full rugby gear to save the day, for no reason whatsoever.
