1969 - 1998

Toilet Rascal

Why? Why should we remember the Ninth of November?

Germany for a start.
Quite a lot happened in Germany on that one day (although not all at once):
• 1313 – Louis the Bavarian defeats his cousin Frederick I of Austria at the Battle of Gammelsdorf.
• 1848 – Robert Blum, a German revolutionary, is executed in Vienna.
• 1918 – Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany abdicates after the German Revolution, and Germany is proclaimed a Republic.
• 1923 – In Munich, Germany, police and government troops crush the Beer Hall Putsch in Bavaria.
• 1938 – The Nazi German diplomat Ernst vom Rath dies from the fatal gunshot wounds of Jewish resistance fighter Herschel Grynszpan, an act used as an excuse to instigate the 1938 national pogrom, also known as Kristallnacht.
• 1989 – Cold War: Fall of the Berlin Wall. East Germany opens checkpoints in the Berlin Wall allowing its citizens to travel to West Germany. This led to the eventual reunification of East and West Germany.
• 2007 – The German Bundestag passes the controversial data retention bill mandating storage of citizens' telecommunications traffic data for six months without probable cause.
Monarchists, anarchists, republicans and communists, Nazis, Stasis, aristocrats and spies; there's something on this day for everyone, and there's something in this thread for all of them (for most of them it involves a wall). Blum seems okay though.

Other things of UKMT interest that happened on November 9th:
• 1688 – Glorious Revolution: William of Orange captures Exeter, which is almost as dull as Bath.
• 1791 – Foundation of the Dublin Society of United Irishmen. Popes, Ministers, and Oberleutnant will later write many letters about them.
• 1888 – Mary Jane Kelly is murdered in London, widely believed to be the fifth and final victim of Jack the Ripper.
• 1917 – Joseph Stalin enters the provisional government of Bolshevik Russia and HorseLord's heart.
• 1921 – The Italian National Fascist Party comes into existence. National Fascism is having something of a comeback tour in Europe.
• 1965 – The Catholic Worker Movement member Roger Allen LaPorte, protesting against the Vietnam War, sets himself on fire in front of the United Nations building.
• 1979 – Nuclear false alarm: NORAD computers detected a purported massive Soviet nuclear strike. After reviewing the raw data from satellites and checking the early-warning radars, nukechat is banned from the thread.
• 1998 – Capital punishment in the United Kingdom is finally abolished for all crimes. Blair later looks elsewhere in his lust for death.

What else is in the news?
• David Cameron hosed a dead pig.
• George Osborne hosed everyone on tax credits.
• The House of Lords hosed George Osborne by acting within their remit to block his tax credit changes.
• Tory backbenchers have hosed up a private members bill on free hospital parking by deliberate filibustering.
• Labour are up in the polls, but still polling below the Tories even in the immediate wake of the tax credit fuckery, leading some to suggest that we're all hosed. Local council elections look more promising though.

So you have:

Refugees arrive at Earth, their home destroyed in a war
Doctor arranges a treaty where they can stay (in another story)
It turns out that a lot of them are evil and are running terrorist training camps in the middle east and are having hostages read out statements in front of a black and white flag and so on (it's impossible to describe quite how on the nose this all was)
Because we let them in society has now been overthrown

It had the doctor occasionally shouting "No, don't radicalise more of them by fighting them!" but the story definitely played into the concept of a of Islam being an invasive, radicalising, destructive force that is an existential threat to the UK. It basically assumes that the Mail's position is factual and casts the Doctor as a Guardian columnist, who has no actual effect on the events of the episode, at best.

basically I think the #1 main thing is how all the deficit hawkery that they've been pushing has gently settled in the back of everyone's minds due to nobody challenging it much, the tories are bad but fear of the Evil Debt making things even worse might be staying their hand.

Who's doing the polling and what metrics are they using? If the polls from the US Democtartic Party primaries are any example, these are all important factors in judging the actual opinons of the public. Alot of polls in the US had Hilary Clinton whipping Bernie Sanders in the debates and country wide opinion. Analysis of the actual numbers that mattered showed that Bernie Sander in fact killed at the debate and might be leading in key states.

You'd never know it through the media because HILLARY HILLARY HILLARY BERNIE IS A LOONEY SOCIALIST/NO ONE BUT HILLARY IS RUNNING IGNORE ALL OTHERS.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure those polls showing Sanders killing it at the debates were online polls not conducted scientifically. The story was that the media were ignoring the online polls and pushing a Hillary agenda. I'm fairly certain the polls that came out a week or two later conducted by actual polling groups showed a huge surge for Hilary. I mean I'd rather it weren't true, but I'm pretty sure that's the case.

No actually. The scientific polls after the debate that show Hillary winning were formed from opinions of alot of people who had not even watched the debates. They had just read the coverage of the debates on either a news organisations' websites or read about it in the paper. Turns out when what your reading tells you who won without you having watched the source, you're going to form misaligned opinions. Many places have narrowed those polls down to people who bother read the coverage and also watched the debate. People who actually watched show Bernie absolutely crushing Hillary Clinton.

Just to show you how bad the bias actually was, the CNN polls following the debate that showed Bernie leading were removed and replaced with what looked like a poll, but was actually just opinion be the CNN staff on who won. They also started removing any and all favourable comments about Sanders from the comments section. It was also revealed that the main offender of this behaviour, the debate hosts, CNN, had infact donated ALOT of money to Hillary's campaign. They were basically acting as her personal promotional wing.

TL/DR: I guess my point is, whenever people are actually allowed to hear and see a socialist/left leaning candidate talk about issues, they are golden. They are popular and their attitudes by and large reflect the voting public. It is no surprises then that media actually actively works to ignore or deride such candidates.

Actually his handling of public relations is good. When people go and see him, they walk away with favourable opinions, especially amongst young voters. What's shown in the US news are... well actually he's not shown in the US news at all really aside from people doing a point and laugh or clips from the debate where they clip it to make it look like he's throwing his support behind Clinton. There are numerous raw videos that you can watch online and see for yourself how he acts. There's one recently where he' at a college and brings a Muslim-American student up on stage after she asks a question about Islamaphobia and bigotry, brings her up, gives her a hug and then proceeds to talk about the issues. It's a Bill Clinton moment. You are not going to see that anywhere but online for a reason.

Just note, Jeremy Corbyn is being handled in much the same way by the UK media. Ignored or derided. When the 2020 elections swing around I hope that there isn't a blanket black-out on news regarding him. Luckily the UK news is slightly better than their US counterparts about that

Which would be fair, except how many people can you reasonably do this for? Left-wing views are pretty palatable in a one-to-one scenario but this is not possible by and large. I would love Bernie to somehow win the US presidency but it is extremely unlikely if not impossible. Please do not set yourself up for a horrific disappointment by assuming he'll break through eventually.

I really like Bernie, but he cannot possibly win because of how hosed the Anglophone 'democracies'* are.

I lived in the UK for 30 years of my life. I am 35. I was basically forced to move to the Philippines to live with family almost 3 years ago because it was either that, or be a homeless, suicidally depressed man probably living on the street and getting zero care. The UK , conservative, Tory led system rejected me after the 2008 crash. Even so, I want to move back. I want to move back so that I can join the Labour movement, vote for Corbyn and potentially get some sanity back into the British politics.

Sorry about my rather passionate US rants there, but I have people I love living in that country and it is important to me that they are represented adequately. I am one of those kooky gently caress-nationalism-we-are-all-human-pacifism-owns guys, which is why I love Corbyn.

I'm not set up for disappointment really. If it's fought for then I'll feel fine about it. If it isn't then I will just get angry. However it is being pushed on both sides of the Atlantic, so it's alright by me.

Philippine politics on the other hand , sheesh. Though the looming threat of the nation being drowned by global climate change might see a vicious political swing hard right or hard left sometime in the future.
